## In short

Eochongye 1beonji is a late-night sashimi restaurant in Gangseo, Seoul, a five-minute walk from Hwagok Station. I ordered the small seasonal assorted sashimi platter and enjoyed thick-cut fish with a range of sauces at a roomy table. Verdict: a great pick for sashimi and drinks late in Hwagok.

I spotted Eochongye 1beonji while walking around Hwagok Station~ I love sashimi so much that I kept thinking I had to go someday, and now I finally didㅠ It looked huge at first glance!!! From Hwagok Station, just walk straight for about five minutes.

It is open from 3 p.m. until 1:30 a.m., so it is perfect for going to a sashimi place in Hwagok late at night! Maybe because they handle so much fish in the restaurant, the tanks were full~ of fish.

## Spacious tables and a varied sashimi menu

The space is really quite large!! There is seating in front of the kitchen too, and the four-person tables are generously sized, so it seems good for groups. The space between tables did not feel cramped either, which was great great... Best of all, the tables are metal? so they did not have that sticky feeling, which I liked even more.

A sashimi paradise to eat in ~_~ Looking at the menu, there were quite a few kinds of sashimi, plus a separate lunch menu! They have individual mulhoe (cold raw-fish soup) and albap (fish roe rice), so it looks like a good place if you love seafood. There are lots of grilled and fried sides too, so it is easy to order something else while eating sashimi. It would be nice to add a side while having sashimi too haha. Which fish should I get... After debating, I ordered the small seasonal assorted sashimi platter!!!

## Small seasonal assorted sashimi platter and sauces

The banchan (side dishes) came out in abundance, from sauces to seaweed soup. Rather than just soy sauce and chojang (sweet-and-tangy red chili dipping sauce), there were salted seafood, ceviche sauce, makjang, and shiitake wasabi, so you can choose according to your taste. These are not sauces you see easily at sashimi restaurants, so it was fun trying a little of each haha. I tend to eat sashimi with chili peppers, and chili peppers were available through the staff-call menu too, so I ordered some with it!! It was so convenient that I could order all the side dishes through the staff-call menu without having to call someone over.

The seasonal sashimi assortment came with four kinds of fish: salmon, flounder, sea bream, and yellowtail! Thin sashimi has its charm, but I also like thick~ cuts!! Eochongye 1beonji's sashimi was quite thick-cut!!! When sashimi is thin, the sauce can sometimes taste stronger, but the fish here was thick enough to enjoy with all kinds of accompaniments. It was nice to notice each fish's different texture and flavor. Chewy flounder, soft salmon... 🐟

Rather than eating sashimi dipped only in chojang, I like making different combinations, and there were so many sauces here that it was fun to try each piece differently! My pick was makjang + sashimi + garlic!!!! Shiitake wasabi paired better with sashimi than I expected, and the tangy ceviche sauce was a perfect match for the flounder. We ordered the small platter for two, and it was excellent for having a drink with sashimi. I went there hungry, but the cuts were so thick that this alone was enoughhh.

## Late-night sashimi and drinks in Hwagok

What I liked most of all was the opening hours! Since it is open until 1:30 a.m., it is a great place to visit when you want sashimi late in Hwagok!! To eat in this area, you usually have to head over to Magok or Balsan, so I was happy there was somewhere open this late right by Hwagok Station.

The restaurant is fairly spacious, so it seems good for a casual sashimi meal for two or for a larger group. The sashimi was the thick-cut style I love, so overall I was very satisfied. Next time I want to try the seasonal grilled shrimp, other kinds of sashimi, or side dishes~ I definitely need to order maeuntang (spicy fish stew) too... I remembered it only when we were nearly done drinking, which was such a shameㅠㅠ If you are looking for a good sashimi restaurant in Hwagok-dong that stays open late, I recommend Eochongye 1beonji~!!!
