## In short

Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa One Grove Branch is a Nagoya-style eel rice bowl restaurant on the first floor of Building A at One Grove in Magok, Gangseo-gu, Seoul. Arriving at noon, the writer ordered one hitsumabushi set and one kizami hitsumabushi set, each served with umaki (rolled omelette with eel), suimono (clear soup) and tsukemono (pickles), and the highlights were the binchotan-charcoal eel, crisp outside and tender inside, and the ochazuke poured with dashi at the end. Because the kizami version comes in small shredded pieces, the regular hitsumabushi is the better order unless you have a light appetite.

> Title: When the winds of Nagoya reached Magok

## Why Magok One Grove is drawing crowds right now

Noon in Magok, sunlight falling calmly. Amid the forest of towering buildings stands the newest landmark that's been the talk of the town lately — One Grove. Crowded and chaotic, but there's a reason for the crowds.

"These days because of One Grove, other places are kind of struggling..."

![Crowded interior passage of Magok One Grove](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-02-ih38u-966.webp)

And it's true — every good restaurant worth its salt has moved into One Grove, and naturally, since it's all good restaurants, everyone's footsteps head this way.

![Row of shops lined up in the One Grove complex](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-03-st8ju-966.webp)

Today's destination: a renowned house from Nagoya, the home of eel cuisine. (It said so on the menu.)

That's right — 'Kikukawa.'

Even before stepping through the entrance, the faint smell of charcoal smoke and sweet, savory tare sauce is already tickling my nose.

"Are we already... in Nagoya???" Today again, accompanied by my 'gourmet partner' who shares the weight of every meal with me.

![Entrance area of Kikukawa with neatly arranged lighting](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-06-d2g17-966.webp)

Alright, let's go.

## Inside Kikukawa: private rooms, solo counter seats and a waiting area

The moment you walk into the Kikukawa One Grove branch, you notice the neatly arranged lighting. I thought it was AI-generated, ha. There's a waiting area too, and bento-style takeout is available.

"Wan-jyeoni, this is straight-up Japanese vibes."

A tidy wood-toned interior. The place is quite spacious. There are group tables and plush-looking seats too, and I heard it was listed in the Michelin Guide back in 2019.

This isn't just a restaurant — it's like a shrine devoted to eel as an ingredient. There are also solo bar seats, great for eating alone.

The interior is definitely modern and clean, totally my style... good for entertaining guests too, and with private rooms, it's perfect for family, work dinners, or gatherings you want to keep private.

## Ordering at Kikukawa: T-order tablet and printed menu

You order via the T-order tablet, but since quite a few older guests visit too, there's also a paper menu.

![Kikukawa's paper menu opened up](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-07-1kff4-966.webp)

![Menu page listing hitsumabushi dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-08-j3x0c-966.webp)

![Menu page listing set menu compositions](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-10-1t840-966.webp)

![Kikukawa menu reviewed before ordering](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-11-1e7xk-966.webp)

We open the menu and carefully choose what will be responsible for our stamina today.

My pick was the hitsumabushi set; my gourmet partner went with the kizami hitsumabushi set. "Well, it is eel, so the price is..." But price is secondary — flavor comes first.

![Neatly arranged basic table setting](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-13-gyov2-966.webp)

A neatly arranged basic table setting. A good kind of tension before meeting the eel. Not long after ordering, the set menu arrives, served on a tidy wooden tray.

This isn't Magok anymore.

"Nippon... desu...?"

![Bookmark-style guide on how to eat hitsumabushi](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-15-15bb8-966.webp)

They even give you a bookmark-style guide on how to eat it deliciously, one step at a time.

![Suimono clear soup served with the set](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-17-1e7go-966.webp)

![Two kinds of tsukemono side pickles](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-18-z7fnc-966.webp)

![Set dishes arranged alongside the main course](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-19-8xhaj-966.webp)

The main dish's companions. From umaki to suimono, the set composition seems pretty solid.

## Hitsumabushi vs kizami hitsumabushi: what is the difference?

Today's star. Lid open. A glossy sheen swirls out along with the deep aroma of charcoal.

![Lid opened on the hitsumabushi eel rice bowl](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-20-uvf41-966.webp)

"Ohh... so this is the crystallization of 90 years of history."

What defines Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa is this: grilled quickly over powerful binchotan charcoal, it shows the ultimate expression of 'crisp-outside, tender-inside' texture.

This is the kizami hitsumabushi — the version with smaller, chopped-up bits of eel gathered together. If you're ordering, I'd recommend the regular over the kizami. The regular has plumper flesh.

Ah, enough talk, let's eat.

Picking up the wooden paddle, I scoop out a bite-sized portion the traditional Nagoya way, straight to my mouth.

![A bowl of eel rice scooped out with a wooden paddle](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set/magok-onegrove-unagi-kikukawa-hitsumabushi-set-21-1htb5-966.webp)

Mixing in the accompanying scallions, sharp fresh wasabi, and sprinkled seaweed flakes. One bite, and the sharp bite of the wasabi masterfully tames the eel's heavy richness.

"Yeah... this is it." The crisp texture of the scallions combined with the savory seaweed flakes makes the layers of flavor feel far more varied and three-dimensional.

## What comes with the set: umaki and suimono

Straight into a bite of the eel omelet, umaki. A soft, tender texture glides off the chopsticks. The moment it hits your mouth, the sweet, delicate texture of the egg melts away, and within it, the savory, salty juices of the eel burst out.

"How is this... so soft."

Next, a sip of the 'suimono' clear soup. Not salty, mild yet deep with the flavor of dashi, it gently soothes the throat. A bite of the two kinds of tsukemono pickles to cleanse the palate.

Across the table, my gourmet partner's brow furrows with sincere satisfaction. No words needed — I can feel we both deeply agree on the evolution of flavor happening in this bowl.

"Guess we don't need to go to Japan...?"

## The last bowl: eel ochazuke poured with dashi

Finally, we pour the warm broth prepared just for this over a scoop of rice and eat it soupy.

What could have felt heavy as an eel rice bowl meets the warm, savory broth and wraps around the stomach with unbelievable gentleness and warmth. A deep umami sweeps through as everything settles. It reminds me of when my mom used to pour barley tea over rice for me as a kid.

"Back then it was kimchi... now it's eel."

"Success."

## Verdict: who should book Kikukawa in Magok?

Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa — 90 years of history never lies. The crisp skin and tender flesh born from binchotan charcoal, along with the depth of a tare sauce that's rich but not sweet, was truly exceptional.

From the soft umaki to the suimono, the polish of the set menu was more than enough to elevate the standing of the Magok One Grove space itself. The kizami doesn't come with as much eel, so I'd recommend it for those who aren't too hungry — otherwise, go with the regular hitsumabushi!

These days restaurants put so much care into atmosphere and concept, and places like this genuinely make you feel like you've traveled to Japan. This was the taste of Nagoya.

- If you have a bit of room in your budget
- If you want to feel like you've gone to Japan after a while
- If you want to take your family to a high-end restaurant
- If you're entertaining someone important

'Kikukawa' is perfect for moments like these. The flavor is guaranteed, so I recommend it! Recommended rating: ★★★★
