## In short

Obongjip Samseong Branch is a Korean restaurant serving octopus dishes and bossam (boiled pork belly), within walking distance of Samseong Station in Gangnam, Seoul. On a chilly weekend, lunch here just before break time was the mesaengi (fine green seaweed) yeonpotang octopus soup with a bossam set, eaten in order from the bossam to the soup, then kalguksu noodles and porridge. With unlimited rice refills and generous side dishes, Obongjip Samseong Branch is a meal worth remembering on a day when hot broth sounds good.

As the weather turns a little chilly, hot soup keeps coming to mind. That's exactly what I wanted this day, so I went to Obongjip Samseong Branch for a warm, filling meal.

![Mesaengi octopus soup and bossam spread at Obongjip Samseong Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-01-1q66x-1200.webp)

When I think of Obongjip, stir-fried octopus is usually the first thing that comes to mind. But this time I wanted hot soup rather than something spicy, so I ordered mesaengi (fermented seaweed) octopus soup along with bossam (boiled pork belly). Eating my way through bossam, then soup, then noodles and porridge, I ended up feeling properly nourished, haha.

I went right before the weekend break time, at that awkward in-between lunch hour, and it was still packed.

![Busy dining room at Obongjip Samseong Branch during lunch hour](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-04-1sok3-900.webp)

They were also running a fun no-fail draw event, kind of like the old-school lucky draws :)

There's a separate room inside that seats up to 15, which would be great for work dinners or group gatherings.

## Side dishes and unlimited rice at Obongjip Samseong Branch

Once seated, a large tray came out with a variety of side dishes plus seaweed soup. There was stir-fried sausage, white kimchi, stir-fried burdock, more white kimchi, bean sprouts, and more. I took the first spoonful from the seaweed soup — it had dried shrimp in it, giving the broth a clean, refreshing taste.

And at Obongjip Samseong Branch, rice is unlimited refills. With so many side dishes too, this would be a solid lunch spot. Since they also have set menus for sharing, it seems like a good option among Samseong Station restaurants for office lunches or team dinners.

## What is on the menu at Obongjip Samseong Branch?

Here's the Obongjip menu — beyond stir-fried octopus, there's bossam, octopus soup, clam soup, and hot pot too.

We ordered the set that combines octopus soup and bossam. It came with noodles and porridge included, so we decided to make it a proper full meal, haha.

(Obongjip's stir-fried octopus is delicious too... just not today, so here's a photo to console myself...)

## What comes with the octopus soup and bossam set?

After ordering, they first set up a burner at the table.

![Burner set up on the table](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-13-1bb1p-900.webp)

![Octopus soup pot and kalguksu noodles before cooking](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-14-1la48-900.webp)

Shortly after, the soup arrived with big chunks of octopus in it, along with the kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) to add in later. Since the octopus needed a bit of time to cook, we started with the bossam first. Eating bossam while the soup simmered beside us meant the wait didn't feel long at all.

## Starting with the bossam pork at Obongjip Samseong Branch

![Bossam and kimchi neatly arranged at Obongjip Samseong Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-15-156gu-900.webp)

The bossam came neatly arranged on one side, with lean meat and fat mixed in just the right ratio — savory without being greasy. I came for the octopus soup, but honestly the bossam was just as memorable.

The kimchi that came with it was in big pieces, meant to be cut to size and eaten alongside.

A piece of bossam topped with kimchi was the ultimate combo. Picking at it piece by piece while waiting for the soup to boil, I was already pretty full just from the bossam, haha.

## How was the mesaengi octopus soup broth?

While we were eating bossam, the soup started bubbling away.

Along with the big pieces of octopus, there were plenty of vegetables too — napa cabbage, scallion, minari (water dropwort), onion, mushrooms, and zucchini. On top of that, mesaengi was mixed in.

I've been trying to eat more vegetables lately, so getting so many different kinds in one pot made me happy, haha. I cut the big octopus pieces into bite-size and scooped them out with the vegetables one by one.

![Mesaengi octopus soup filled with big octopus pieces and vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-16-dvvdh-900.webp)

![Octopus cut and scooped out from the soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-17-aufa0-900.webp)

The broth with mesaengi in it was especially good. The base broth itself was already deep, and adding the seaweed made it even more smooth and rich.

![Octopus soup broth mixed with mesaengi seaweed](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-18-13usq-900.webp)

Scooping out plenty of octopus and vegetables and spooning up the hot broth left me feeling full and satisfied inside. This was exactly the kind of soup I wanted on a chilly day, and it turned out gentler on the stomach and tastier than I expected.

## Adding kalguksu noodles to the octopus soup

After eating most of the octopus and vegetables, we added the noodles. I was already quite full from the bossam, but skipping the noodles entirely felt like a waste (is it just me, haha). We put the noodles in the broth, let them boil, and dug in right away.

![Kalguksu noodles boiled in the octopus soup broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-19-nn7te-900.webp)

The kalguksu noodles were chewy with great texture. Adding noodles to the broth that had already simmered with octopus, mesaengi, and vegetables felt like eating a whole different dish.

## How to cook the porridge at the end of the set

![Porridge ingredients: rice, carrot, onion, zucchini and a raw egg](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-20-84pdd-900.webp)

![Porridge simmered in the remaining broth with added ingredients](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-21-evplw-900.webp)

Even after the noodles, there was still porridge left to make. They bring out rice, carrot, onion, zucchini, and a raw egg for this. You just leave a little broth in the pot, add all the ingredients, and simmer it well.

We also sprinkled in the gim-garu (seasoned seaweed flakes) that came with the original side dishes. I meant to eat just a little since I was already full, but once the porridge was bubbling, my spoon kept going back in, haha.

Starting with bossam, moving through the octopus soup, then noodles, and finally porridge — it really was a full, satisfying meal from start to finish.

## Is Obongjip Samseong Branch worth a visit? Final thoughts

Normally at Obongjip I always order the stir-fried octopus without question, but this time I wanted something hot and hearty, so I tried the octopus soup and bossam for the first time.

![Table with bossam and mesaengi octopus soup together](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-22-1btlu-900.webp)

Between the savory bossam and the octopus soup loaded with mesaengi, octopus, and vegetables, this ended up more filling than I expected. The mesaengi in particular made the soup broth something I genuinely enjoyed drinking. And being able to follow it up with noodles and porridge meant I walked out completely full.

![Interior view of Obongjip Samseong Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam/obongjip-samseong-maesaengi-yeonpotang-bossam-24-yp2me-900.webp)

Obongjip Samseong Branch was where I turned to when I wanted something hot and Korean near Samseong Station. From bossam to octopus soup to noodles to porridge, it was a truly filling meal. I have a feeling I'll be thinking about it again once the weather turns colder. :)
