## In short

Modam Dining Gwanghwamun is a hanjeongsik (traditional Korean set-course) restaurant on B1 of the Deoksugung D-Palace building, 549m from Gwanghwamun Station Exit 6 in Jongno, Seoul. Two friends ordered the abalone tteokgalbi (grilled meat patty) set and the abalone shrimp jang with butter rice set at 40,000 won each, and the course ran from seasonal potato porridge to a seasonal live-fish and pickle ceviche, modam fritters, perilla oil capellini and sujeonggwa (cinnamon punch). With a gallery-like entrance set with stone objects and rooms from four seats up to group rooms for eight or more, Modam Dining Gwanghwamun works easily for family gatherings or a sangyeonrye (formal pre-wedding family meeting).

Modam Dining Gwanghwamun sits on B1 of D-Palace. At the entrance, a flower-shaped light symbolizing Modam glowed softly, giving off a clean, tidy atmosphere.

The space leading into the restaurant had stones and small objects arranged like a little gallery.

Further in, traditional stone pieces were displayed alongside calm-toned artworks — genuinely gallery-like, haha.

A modern space with a Korean atmosphere — from the entrance on, it felt like a tidy, upscale hanjeongsik restaurant.

Even the lighting was beautiful; you could honestly call it a gallery haha.

### Hall seating at Modam Dining Gwanghwamun

The main hall was mostly wood-toned, giving off a warm, comfortable feel overall. Tables were fairly well spaced, with seating available for larger groups too.

### Private rooms for 4 to 8 or more guests

Further inside are various sizes of private rooms suited to different party sizes.

From small 4-person rooms to group rooms fitting 8 or more, it looked well suited to family gatherings, sangyeonrye, or business meals.

Inside the rooms, pretty artwork, decor, and even coat hangers were neatly arranged. Anyone looking for a good Gwanghwamun hanjeongsik meeting spot would be satisfied here.

We ordered the abalone tteokgalbi set for ₩40,000 and the abalone shrimp jang and butter rice set for ₩40,000. We decided to try both sets between the two of us.

## The course order, from seasonal potato porridge to capellini

First out was the seasonal porridge, which looked like smoothly ground potato porridge.

It had the characteristic fluffy, mild taste of potato with a subtle nuttiness added, and the texture was soft — easy on the stomach and comforting.

Next came a seasonal salad with yuzu dressing. Fresh seasonal vegetables were generously topped with tangy yuzu dressing, bright in color from the start.

The crisp texture of the vegetables paired well with the sweet-tart, fragrant yuzu.

Next was mustard vegetables with pine nut sauce — crisp vegetables and ingredients lightly tossed in a nutty pine nut sauce.

The subtle tang of the mustard perked up the appetite without feeling heavy. The mild, nutty pine nut sauce combined with the sharp mustard made for a refreshing, clean bite.

The cheongyang chili water kimchi that came alongside had clear, cool broth with crisp vegetables.

It started off clean and refreshing, then finished with a subtle kick from the cheongyang chili — just the right amount of spice, not overwhelming, and delicious.

![Plate of seasonal live-fish sashimi and pickle ceviche](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance-11-678nx-900.webp)
*Seasonal live-fish sashimi and pickle ceviche*

Next was the seasonal live-fish sashimi and pickle ceviche — a fusion Korean dish of fresh live-fish sashimi with finely chopped pickles and a tangy sauce.

The sashimi was soft and chewy, and the crunchy, savory-salty pickles added a lot. The bright acidity brought out the sashimi's clean flavor and freshened the palate nicely.

![A plate of modam fritters with sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance-12-1tcu6-900.webp)
*Modam fritters*

Next up was the modam fritters. Crispy on the outside and moist and soft inside, they weren't heavily oily, so they were easy to keep eating cleanly.

The accompanying sauce was really good, and inside seemed to be fried mushroom. Eating them together, I just kept reaching for more..❤️

Next was perilla oil capellini, thin pasta noodles tossed with perilla oil.

The thin noodles carried a subtle, nutty perilla oil aroma, and combined with seaweed flakes and vegetables for a taste that was both familiar and unique.

The noodles were soft yet had a nice bite, and eating them with shrimp added a clean savoriness and extra texture. The portion was light, but the deep perilla flavor made it a memorable dish.

## Abalone tteokgalbi set and the side dishes that come with it

The main dishes we ordered this time were tteokgalbi and shrimp jang.

![Four basic side dishes including baechu kimchi and namul](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance-13-1ukmh-900.webp)
*Basic side dishes for the main course*

Alongside the mains came four neatly arranged basic side dishes: baechu kimchi, cucumber muchim, seaweed stem muchim, and doraji (bellflower root) muchim.

*Abalone tteokgalbi*

The main abalone tteokgalbi dish lets you enjoy golden-grilled tteokgalbi together with a whole abalone.

![Close-up of golden-grilled abalone tteokgalbi](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance-15-1n2pf-900.webp)

![Vertical photo of glossy seasoned tteokgalbi](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance-16-1ifhx-900.webp)

The tteokgalbi was glossy with sauce, sweet and salty seasoning well soaked in — great with rice, and delicious.

![Whole abalone cut into bite-sized pieces](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance-18-1wdy9-900.webp)

The whole abalone was chewy without being tough, and blended well with the seasoning — I just kept saying 'so good' over and over~~

## How to eat the abalone shrimp jang and butter rice set

![Full spread of the abalone shrimp jang and butter rice set](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance-19-15izf-900.webp)
*Abalone shrimp jang and butter rice*

The other main dish was my friend's order — abalone shrimp jang (soy-marinated shrimp) with butter rice.

![Chunky shrimp and seafood in abalone shrimp jang](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance-20-13ho1-900.webp)

My friend likes shrimp jang, so that's what we ordered. The chunky shrimp jang came with plenty of seafood — it looked so appetizing!

Can you see the size of the shrimp? They were firm and plump, with the soy seasoning soaked all the way through for a nice salty umami, and the abalone was chewy yet tender.

![Butter rice served alongside shrimp jang](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance/gwanghwamun-hanjeongsik-modam-dining-gallery-entrance-21-14xpd-900.webp)

I wondered why it was called butter rice — turns out you mix butter into the rice, just enough to eat with the shrimp jang.

Mixing the nutty butter rice evenly with the abalone, shrimp meat, and soy seasoning was so delicious..

The soft, nutty richness of the butter melded with the salty soy seasoning — a total winner.. A delicacy where the umami builds with every bite!

Dessert was sujeonggwa (cinnamon punch), a clean way to finish.
