## In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a gyukatsu restaurant in Mapo, Seoul. At dinner, I tried the 47,000 won yakiniku set with smoked gyukatsu, pot rice, and three broths; the individual grill made it especially fun. Verdict: a lovely, polished choice for solo meals, dates, or gatherings.

## Gyudo, connected underground from Mapo Station

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is connected underground to the Obelisk building when you walk over from Mapo Station Exit 1. So you can visit comfortably even on a rainy day—and if you drive, parking is free in the restaurant building. Accessibility: 100/100!

Gyudo is a premium gyukatsu (Japanese-style breaded beef cutlet) specialist, and apparently operates only directly managed locations rather than franchises in order to offer the best quality.

You can join the waitlist on Catchtable in front of the restaurant. We arrived around 6:30 p.m. on a weekday, with five parties ahead of us. We waited about 10 minutes, but there were so many people that they stopped taking names around 7:30 p.m. I don't think you should go too late.

From the entrance guarded by a fox statue, it already feels a bit like Japan. The fox (kitsune) holding a stalk of rice straw is so cute.

Gyudo has a clean, high-ceilinged, distinctly Japanese-style atmosphere. With tables, counter seats, and other seating options, it is such a good spot for everything from eating alone to dates, dinners out, and gatherings! There are even thoughtful coat lockers, tucked into a lovely wooden cabinet.

## Thoughtful table settings, with an individual grill and drawer

When you sit down, there is a custom-made bangjja yugi (traditional Korean brassware) individual grill waiting for you. One grill per person!

A custom-made cutlery pouch was inside the individual drawer. It was my first time seeing cutlery tucked into a pouch. It made me feel so thoughtfully looked after—love it!

This mini rice paddle looked like it would be very useful for stirring the pot rice. I wanted to take it homeee. The individual drawer also has flake toppings to add to the sungnyung (scorched-rice broth). Take them out in advance, because you might forget when it is time to eat the sungnyung.

- Set 3, niku mabushi set ₩47,000: gyukatsu set meal + niku mabushi for two, with gamtae myeongran and drinks

Everyone said both the gyukatsu and yakiniku were delicious, so we ordered the yakiniku set. I was sooo excited 🥹

![Smoked yakiniku set spread](https://img.superchart.com/images/mapo-smoked-yakiniku-gyudo/mapo-smoked-yakiniku-gyudo-07-o5ls3-550.webp)

It is a satisfying spread with smoked yakiniku and gyukatsu, gamtae myeongran, and drinks. There is quite a lot of yakiniku, and the meat looked like such good quality.

Gamtae myeongran—seasoned pollock roe wrapped in gamtae seaweed—with rice is pure heaven! We paid extra for Japanese marble soda. I like it because it tastes like a Candy Bar ice pop.

## Sindongjin pot rice and three ochazuke-style sungnyung broths

And then there was the freshly cooked pot rice made with Sindongjin rice. As a pot-rice fanatic, I really love Sindongjin rice. It is top-grade rice with wonderful chewiness and texture, so I love it sooo much... Just looking at it made my mouth water. I filled my bowl right up.

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo has a special sungnyung. It combines Korean sungnyung with Japanese ochazuke (rice in tea or broth), and comes with three broths: roasted barley tea sungnyung, tonkotsu broth (pork soup), and katsuobushi broth (traditional Japanese bonito broth).

Tonkotsu broth is on the left, and katsuobushi broth is on the right.

You can dip the onsen tamago (soft-cooked marinated egg) in sauce, or mix it into the rice—it is delicious either way. They say the myeongi wasabi, every sauce, and even the shredded radish salad are all 100% house-made! The radish salad cuts through any richness, and the yakiniku sauce on the right is seriously delicious...

## Smoked gyukatsu and yakiniku cooked on your own grill

With the yakiniku set meal, you get to eat both gyukatsu and yakiniku, so hap-py!

![A full gyukatsu and yakiniku meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/mapo-smoked-yakiniku-gyudo/mapo-smoked-yakiniku-gyudo-19-8hcpg-550.webp)

Gyudo's signature dish: Korea's only premium gyukatsu! My gyukatsu-loving husband ate it while declaring it number one. Gyudo's gyukatsu is made with a crisp coating and 20-hour-aged strip loin.

![20-hour-aged strip loin gyukatsu](https://img.superchart.com/images/mapo-smoked-yakiniku-gyudo/mapo-smoked-yakiniku-gyudo-20-zjx0e-550.webp)

It is wood-smoked in an offset smoker, and grilling it on your individual brazier adds a light smoky flavor for a special gyukatsu experience.

The balance of crisp breading and tender meat was so good, and the more you chewed, the more savory the beef became. So, so delicious!! With the individual grill, you can cook it just how you like.

The second signature dish, yakiniku, also uses 20-hour-aged strip loin, so the meat is incredibly tender. Bite into it and the juices burst out... The myeongi wasabi is the key: spicy and pungent, with a little freshness. Such a good match with the meat!

Gamtae topped with myeongran and onsen tamago is a total rice thief...

The sungnyung made with tonkotsu broth looks a little like seolleongtang, but tastes like pork gukbap. So fascinating! The katsuobushi sungnyung really tastes of katsuobushi, and adding the flake toppings makes it even richer.

It was such a happy dinner, with delicious pot rice, smoked gyukatsu, and yakiniku all in one meal. The atmosphere is lovely and the space is clean, making it a great place for solo meals, dates, dinners out, or gatherings. I will definitely come back next time 🤍🤍
