## In short

Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel Direct Store (장수촌풍천장어직판장) is a grilled eel restaurant in its own standalone building on Bongcheon-ro, near Bongcheon Station in Gwanak, Seoul. A 1kg order of salt-grilled eel brings arm-length freshwater eel that the owner grills for you at the table, plus the eel-and-loach soup (chueotang) that comes with the set; with one extra bowl of rice, two diners paid about 30,000 won per person. The salt-grilled eel had no muddy smell and was crisp outside and tender inside, making Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel Direct Store a solid choice for both family outings and work dinners.

This trip's find is a restaurant near Bongcheon Station that's great for family meals or work dinners: Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel Direct Store. It had been a while since I had grilled eel, and it was odor-free and springy — so, so good!

Located at 382 Bongcheon-ro, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, it's close to Bongcheon Station, making it pretty accessible for family gatherings or dining with a group.

Arrived at Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel Direct Store, a go-to spot in Bongcheon.

A sign said they only sell live eel prepped fresh that same day. Maybe that's why the eel was so fresh with zero fishy smell.

## Inside Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel Direct Store: two floors and grill tables

Walking into Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel Direct Store, the overall vibe is comfortable and practical. The tables are dark-toned with visible wood grain, fitting the restaurant well, and each table has its own charcoal grill. Rather than fancy decor, it feels like a spacious, no-frills place built for groups to sit around and grill comfortably. The neatly arranged side dishes add to the tidy impression.

## What we ordered: 1kg salt-grilled eel with the chueotang set

What we ordered that day was 1kg of salt-grilled eel. I've always felt eel is best eaten salt-grilled rather than with sauce, so you can really taste it as it is — and Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel, a favorite spot in Bongcheon, defaults to salt. That says they're confident in the eel's natural flavor! Order 1kg and you don't just get eel — an eel-loach soup (chueotang) comes as part of the set too, so with one added bowl of rice, the meal was hearty and complete.

A sign noting Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel as a customer-favorite brand. Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel really was delicious...

It's a standalone building with wide floor-to-ceiling windows, which made the space feel bigger and airier — I really liked that.

This is the second floor — the restaurant spans two levels, so if you want a more private, spacious meal, you can eat upstairs.

## Self-serve side dish bar and the banchan served first

There's a self-serve side dish zone here. The first plate comes free, and you can help yourself to more if you need it. There were already plenty of standard banchan, so we didn't add any.

The standard side dishes: chive salad that pairs well with eel, refreshing cabbage salad to reset your palate, lotus root banchan, white kimchi, and pickled ginger, essential with eel.

Also came with eel sauce, pickled perilla leaves, and garlic good for grilling. The tangy side dishes help cut through the richness of the eel, good to mix in between bites.

Dunking ginger in the eel sauce and topping each piece of eel with it is a great combo.

## Grilled at your table: how big is the freshwater eel?

Once the eel hits the charcoal grill, the meal really kicks off. A great thing about Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel Direct Store is that skilled, experienced ajummas grill the eel just right for you. Who grills for you matters a lot at a work dinner or family meal, and this place passes with flying colors. Also, the eel size genuinely surprised me! It barely fit on the large grill, totally different in thickness and size from what you'd see at a regular grocery store. Almost as long as my arm. I wondered if two people could really finish it all — but it was so good, it disappeared in no time.

Since it's so big, they cut it in half before grilling.

They even trim the skin part neatly, piece by piece, so it's easy to eat.

Can you see this thickness?!! You have to open your chopsticks wide just to grab a piece.

As the thick-cut eel cooks over the fire, a savory smell rises up — and that's when your appetite really kicks in.

## Is grilled eel better value than beef in Seoul?

My beloved eel... personally, the eel I had that day felt tastier than beef. With beef, going for good cuts gets pricey fast, and the bill climbs quickly when you're eating with a group. Eel, on the other hand, gives you a full, generous spread with real satisfaction. Especially for a family meal, having a proper eel-grilling meal for once instead of just meat after meat feels like a good choice.

Last, they grilled some rice cake too. Golden-brown and dipped in eel sauce, it tastes like Japanese dango.

Eel tastes best when the outside is browned but the inside stays moist — and the ajumma grilled it exactly right.

It was too big to eat in one bite, so she cut it all in half for us. Haha.

## How the salt-grilled eel tastes on the first bite

Finally, the first bite! Wrapped in chive salad, one bite is packed full of plump eel. Crisp outside, tender inside, springy, and it just melts in your mouth.

I want to eat this again. Next time I want to bring my parents along.

Plump, perfectly cooked eel! Being salt-grilled means you can really taste the eel's own savoriness. With a strong sauce, you'd taste the sauce first — but with salt-grilling, the eel's distinctive mild yet rich fattiness stays intact. Add the charcoal smoke, and the savoriness builds with every piece. Eel is delicious on its own, but pairing it with the vegetables and garlic that come along, or adding a bit of chive salad or ginger, brings out more variety and keeps you reaching for more.

## The eel-and-loach soup (chueotang) included with the set

After the eel, the eel-loach soup (chueotang) is a must. It comes standard with the set, no extra order needed — that's a real perk of this Bongcheon favorite, Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel. They say this chueotang is made by finely grinding eel and loach prepped fresh every morning, which is probably why the broth tastes richer and more savory than a typical chueotang. With finely ground eel and loach in it, the broth is thick and deep, and it pairs really well as a warm finish after grilled eel.

Hot, savory, delicious eel-loach soup. It would be filling enough on its own, but we added a bowl of rice that day. Mixing rice into the broth completes it into a proper full meal. Even with your stomach already fairly full from the grilled eel, the rich, savory broth somehow makes you want to eat rice all over again — that's the strange charm of this dish.

![Rice mixed into the eel-loach soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongcheon-eel-salt-grill-jangsuchon/bongcheon-eel-salt-grill-jangsuchon-23-1jowu-900.webp)

The kind of taste that just naturally restores your energy.

Lastly, we had some nicely browned rice cake skewers.

## Why Bongcheon-ro's eel house works for family meals and work dinners

The eel sauce has a slightly sweet soy base, kind of like Japanese dango, so it was nice to end on. Overall, Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel Direct Store strikes me as a great grilled eel spot for family meals or dining with parents. What I liked most of all was the value for the price. Feeding a family beef, especially good cuts, gets pricey fast — but here you can eat top-grade eel generously without feeling the pinch.

For two people, centering the meal around 1kg of salt-grilled eel like we did, plus the eel-loach soup and rice, gets you a stomach-bursting meal for about 30,000 won per person. Grilling plump eel over charcoal, then finishing with a rich eel-loach soup made from freshly ground eel and loach, mixed with rice — the meal's ending was just as satisfying as everything before it. Would definitely come back! Thanks for the meal today.
