This was my first visit, but Hyeonseonine was already clearly a famous tteokbokki place!! Lots of celebrities and YouTubers have visited too!! (A tteokbokki restaurant for spice lovers.) My first impression was the wonderfully vintage exterior, right down to the chimney. Once inside, it was much bigger than I expected. With high ceilings and plenty of tables, I could eat comfortably without feeling cramped. As expected of a popular place, there was a lunch wait, and I got in after about 10 minutes. I visited around noon, and it was packed with office workers. The tteokbokki menu had sets and individual items. There were two kinds of tteokbokki: snack-shop-style tteokbokki and instant tteokbokki!! There were also all kinds of popular snack-shop foods, including fried items, ramen, mini gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), and fish cakes. There were three heat levels—mild, medium, and spicy—and if you cannot handle heat, you absolutely need to get mild. It came with wheat-flour rice cakes, fish cakes, cabbage, scallions, two eggs, and jjolmyeon noodles, and it was quite spicy even at the medium level!! The cabbage helped tame the spice, and I mashed up the boiled egg and mixed it into the sauce. The sauce was not overly salty or sweet, so I could keep eating it without feeling overwhelmed. Stir-frying it in the leftover tteokbokki sauce made a perfect finish!! (Fried crumbs on the fried rice are also a special treat.) Umai! I had wondered whether tteokbokki was really worth waiting for, but I could see why people do. The balance of spicy, sweet, and savory in the sauce was so harmonious that I just kept eating! It had been a while since I enjoyed tteokbokki this much!! Next time, I need to come back and take on Hyeonseonine’s signature spicy tteokbokki!!
