## In short

Padong is a Japanese restaurant on the basement floor of a building 2–3 minutes' walk from Mangwon Station Exit 2 in Mapo, Seoul. Arriving before noon on a weekend still meant a full house and a 10-minute wait, after which the couple shared futomaki, basil soba and a steak rice bowl, with the unexpectedly spicy basil soba and its chewy, kalguksu-style noodles the standout. Portions at Padong are modest, which made it a good first stop before street snacks at Mangwon Market.

There are weekend mornings when, somehow, you crave clean, comforting Japanese food. My wife and I went looking for a good Japanese spot and ended up at a hidden gem in the back streets of Mangwon-dong: Padong.

This place already has quite the buzz, so a weekend open-run was basically mandatory. Between the cute atmosphere, the variety of dishes, and some Mangwon-dong date tips, it was a feast for the eyes and the mouth. Here's my full Mangwon Station Japanese restaurant report.

## Where is Padong, and what are its hours and parking?

Padong is on the basement level (B1) of 47 World Cup-ro 17-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, a 2–3 minute walk from Mangwon Station Exit 2. It's open 11:30–21:00 and closed every Monday.

- Address: 47 World Cup-ro 17-gil, B1, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea
- Hours: 11:30–21:00 (closed every Monday)
- Parking: No dedicated lot (nearby Mangwon 1-dong Community Center public parking recommended)

💡 TIP: Mangwon-dong gets extremely crowded with tourists and foot traffic on weekends. Driving in can turn into a bit of a hell party, so I'd strongly recommend public transit — it's just a 2–3 minute walk from Mangwon Station Exit 2!

## How long is the weekend wait at Padong?

We arrived just before noon, not long after the 11:30 opening — and wow, aside from the reserved seats, the place was already full. We put our names on the waitlist and waited about 10 minutes before being seated. Watching customers keep streaming in and the wait list keep growing while we ate, I felt like we'd found a genuinely great spot, and my expectations only rose.

The restaurant is a cozy semi-basement space you reach by going down two or three steps. It's not huge inside, but Pokémon figures scattered around and Totoro drawings on the windows give it a cute feel, like stepping into a Japanese anime.

## Padong's oversized futomaki: how big and how good?

![Padong's signature futomaki, served as 5 pieces](https://img.superchart.com/images/pado-mangwon-japanese-weekend-lunch/pado-mangwon-japanese-weekend-lunch-03-j8q4y-966.webp)

First up was the restaurant's signature dish, futomaki (thick seaweed rice roll). It comes as 5 pieces, and each one is genuinely huge — hard to fit in one bite. But isn't futomaki only really futomaki if you cram it in whole?

The moment I stretched my mouth wide and bit down, the crisp, savory taste of freshly fried shrimp tempura hit first. The filling stayed perfectly clean, with no sogginess or greasy aftertaste from the frying. Then the crunch of fresh vegetables cleansed the palate, before the chewy, rich flavor of tuna rounded everything off. The harmony of ingredients was really impressive.

## Why the basil soba at Padong is surprisingly spicy

![Padong's basil soba topped with egg yolk and arugula](https://img.superchart.com/images/pado-mangwon-japanese-weekend-lunch/pado-mangwon-japanese-weekend-lunch-04-a2feo-966.webp)

Curious, I ordered the basil soba, something I'd never seen before. It's built on a fragrant basil pesto base, topped with arugula, garlic flakes, minced pork, and a glistening egg yolk.

I broke the yolk and mixed everything together. The basil's fragrance and the richness of the olive oil came through strongly, but then an unexpected spiciness kicked in and caught me off guard. That spiciness is the masterstroke — it perfectly cuts through what could otherwise be a heavy, oily basil flavor. The noodles weren't thin pasta or the kind of udon that snaps apart; they were closer to slightly plump, chewy kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), and that bouncy texture suited the dish perfectly.

## Padong's protein-packed steak rice bowl

As a meat lover, I ordered the steak rice bowl. It comes piled high with about 11–12 generous slices of hanger steak, cut like chapsteak. The meat wasn't tough at all — every last bite was tender and satisfying.

Topping a bite of meat over rice with a bit of fresh wasabi and scallion, then dipping it in the egg yolk, doubled the savory richness. The rice itself carried a mild spicy seasoning that paired really well with the meat. It's the perfect combination of carbs, protein, and fat — anyone into gym workouts or running would find this a satisfying, healthy-feeling protein meal.

## Are the portions enough? Padong to Mangwon Market as a date course

Overall, the umami, the doneness of the noodles and rice, even the sharp quality of the wasabi — the food itself was flawless. (The restaurant was so busy that the staff's service felt a little rushed, but it wasn't disruptive enough to spoil the meal.)

That said, after clearing three dishes between the two of us, our first words leaving the restaurant were, "Hm, I'm still hungry!" 🤣 The portions really aren't that large. But that might actually be lucky — because after filling up decently at Padong, you can head straight to nearby Mangwon Market for street snacks like hotteok (sweet pancake) or croquettes, making for the perfect weekend date course!

## Final verdict on Padong

Padong, in Mangwon-dong, offers a cute Ghibli-esque space paired with clean, appetite-whetting Japanese food. The combination of the hearty, mouth-filling futomaki and the spicy, fragrant basil soba is memorable enough that I'm still thinking about it. If you want a hearty, delicious Japanese brunch followed by a Mangwon Market date, I highly recommend this full course!
