## In short

Sangdo Neulbori Bongcheon Station Branch is a Korean restaurant on Bongcheon-ro in Gwanak, Seoul, serving braised kodari (half-dried pollock) and barley rice. Visiting at noon with parents before a checkup at Boramae Hospital, the writer ordered the ₩13,000-per-person lunch special with siraegi (dried radish greens) and rice cake added, then paid ₩1,000 extra for barley rice to build a bibimbap at the self-bar. With steamed egg, seaweed soup and a full spread of banchan included, Sangdo Neulbori is an easy Bongcheon Station choice for a meal with older parents.

I was looking for a place nearby to treat my parents to a solid meal before their checkup at Boramae Hospital. Searching for tidy barley rice and something spicy that older folks would enjoy, I came across a well-reviewed Bongcheon Station spot — Sangdo Neulbori, which has enough branches around to show it's popular. This time I headed to the Bongcheon Station branch.

## Parking and the noon atmosphere at Sangdo Neulbori

Sangdo Neulbori Bongcheon Station Branch has its own parking lot, so it was easy to park even though it's right by the station. There's room for about 5 to 6 cars.

Looking through reviews of Sangdo Neulbori, many mention how kind the staff and owner are, and even the phrase posted at the entrance gave off that same sense of care for guests.

By around noon, the place had filled up quickly with what looked like regulars from the neighborhood.

With braised kodari (dried pollock) as the headline dish alongside barley rice and stir-fried baby octopus, the menu has broadly appealing options that would work well for a group gathering too.

## What banchan comes with the meal?

The basic banchan (side dishes) at Sangdo Neulbori Bongcheon Station Branch include kkosiraegi salad, bean sprouts, onion salad, doenjang peppers, dongchimi, and even seaweed soup. My parents and I have eaten kodari many times, but it's rare to find a place with banchan this well put together. As a place known for barley rice, the finishing on the side dishes was excellent.

Kkosiraegi salad, bean sprouts, onion salad, doenjang peppers, dongchimi, and seaweed soup — all the Korean side dishes were prepared neatly and in generous portions.

It didn't feel like a place that just piled on the number of dishes — each one felt carefully seasoned, and you could really taste Sangdo Neulbori's hand in the cooking.

It matched exactly what I was hoping for — giving my parents a proper meal before heading to the hospital.

On top of that, steamed egg and seaweed soup come standard, so even ordering just the main dish fills the table nicely.

With soft steamed egg still giving off steam and rich seaweed soup on the side, the whole meal felt even more substantial.

Given a spread like this, it made sense why so many people call it a Bongcheon Station favorite.

## The ₩13,000 lunch special: siraegi and braised kodari

Prices here are already reasonable, but at lunchtime you can go even lighter on the wallet with the lunch special. We ordered it at ₩13,000 per person, adding siraegi and rice cake.

The lunch special comes with a bowl of rice per person included, so it's nice that you can put together a meal for just over ₩10,000 without any extra add-ons.

Personally, I'd recommend adding both siraegi and rice cake together. The two ingredients pair especially well with Sangdo Neulbori's signature sauce.

The siraegi wasn't tough or dry at all — it was soft and tender, so I think even people who usually avoid it wouldn't have much trouble here.

At first my parents said the portion looked plenty even without adding siraegi, but once the food arrived, they reached for the siraegi first.

### Braised kodari with radish and potato

Unlike typical braised kodari dishes that focus mainly on the fish, this one comes with thoroughly cooked radish and potato mixed in too.

I've often seen radish added, but fluffy new-season potato felt like a fresh touch, and the sauce-soaked potato was really good.

Sometimes when kodari is over-dried or too small, picking the meat off the bones is a hassle, but there was no such issue here.

The flesh had that just-right, chewy-dried texture and was packed generously between the bones, so once I flicked the bones away, the meat yield was quite high.

The sauce is another of this place's secrets — not too spicy, not too sweet, striking a really nice balance. It's not easy to make spice this clean.

With sauce-based dishes, it's common to enjoy the first bites but get tired of the sweetness or heavy aftertaste later on — but here I mixed every last bit of sauce into my rice until the very end.

## Making barley rice bibimbap at the self-bar

![Self-bar with barley rice bibimbap ingredients](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongcheon-kodari-lunch-special-sangdo-neulbori/bongcheon-kodari-lunch-special-sangdo-neulbori-18-1cuhx-966.webp)

This alone was enough to understand why it's called a Bongcheon Station favorite, but one more thing I especially liked was the barley rice.

![Bibimbap vegetable ingredients gathered from the self-bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongcheon-kodari-lunch-special-sangdo-neulbori/bongcheon-kodari-lunch-special-sangdo-neulbori-19-1lrw8-966.webp)

You can swap your regular rice for barley rice, and after adding an extra bowl, you can grab bibimbap ingredients from the self-bar and mix it yourself.

![Barley rice and bibimbap ingredients in a metal bowl](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongcheon-kodari-lunch-special-sangdo-neulbori/bongcheon-kodari-lunch-special-sangdo-neulbori-20-1kaon-966.webp)

Piling the ingredients and rice into a metal bowl, then mixing in the signature sauce and sesame oil, makes for a completely different meal from the main dish.

![Barley rice mixed with signature sauce and sesame oil](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongcheon-kodari-lunch-special-sangdo-neulbori/bongcheon-kodari-lunch-special-sangdo-neulbori-21-u18ys-966.webp)

The basic spread alone is already so filling that tackling the barley rice too might be tough, but since it's such a special treat, I'd recommend trying it even if you're already full.

![Finished bowl of barley rice bibimbap](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongcheon-kodari-lunch-special-sangdo-neulbori/bongcheon-kodari-lunch-special-sangdo-neulbori-22-efbbx-966.webp)

It was almost surprising that you could enjoy bibimbap of this quality for just ₩1,000 extra — I kept being amazed the whole time I ate.

This isn't a place that just ends at 'tasty' — it's a Bongcheon Station spot I keep thinking back to. Thanks to Sangdo Neulbori's neatly set table and the well-balanced sauce on the braised kodari, my parents were satisfied too. I felt proud that my wish to give them a hearty meal before their checkup really came through.
