## In short

Manmok is an eel rice bowl restaurant on Seonneung-ro 82-gil near Seonleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. This visit ordered the full eel rice bowl set, served course-style with chawanmushi (Japanese-style steamed egg custard), matsutake-scented broth, radish salad, white kimchi, sansho pepper, and matcha or black tea ice cream, plus a free draft beer for leaving a receipt review. Wide table spacing made it comfortable for both group dinners and solo dining, and the eel itself was thick, fluffy, and beautifully seasoned.

With the weather the way it's been, I felt like I needed a boost of energy, so I went out for a refined, upscale eel rice bowl! This is Manmok, an eel rice bowl specialist near Seonleung Station, and honestly it exceeded my expectations.

## Manmok's exterior — like a wooden restaurant straight out of Japan

The first thing that caught my eye when I arrived was the neat, upscale exterior — it looked like it had been transplanted straight out of Japan. The warm, stylish wooden interior gives off a calm feeling even from outside, so my expectations shot up before I even walked in!

## Interior atmosphere and table spacing

The wooden interior delivers pure Japanese atmosphere. The moment you step inside, the warm timber decor makes you think, 'Wait, am I actually at some quiet local restaurant in Japan right now?'

![Manmok's dining hall seating with wide table spacing](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok-06-zv00z-966.webp)

The whole place felt neat and the mood was great. The spacing between tables was especially generous, which made it really comfortable to have a private conversation. Thanks to the clean atmosphere, it works perfectly as a group dinner spot near Seonleung Station, and I'd also highly recommend it for a relaxed solo eel rice bowl meal in Gangnam.

## Manmok's menu — half, one, or one-and-a-half servings

A single menu with a special kind of expertise. Looking at the menu, it's run as a single menu offering 'half eel, one eel, or one-and-a-half eel.' Compared to places that try to do everything, this focus on eel alone radiated deep expertise and pride, which built trust in me before I'd even eaten a bite.

## Handy tip! Get a free draft beer for a receipt review

The receipt review event. After your meal, if you leave a receipt review, you get a cold, delicious draft beer for free! Pairing a bite of nicely charred eel with a cold beer washes all the day's fatigue away, so I'd definitely recommend joining in.

## The full spread for one eel rice bowl

A neat, varied set of banchan (side dishes) and sides. You could feel the care put into every part of the meal besides the main eel.

### Chawanmushi and matsutake-scented broth

Chawanmushi (Japanese-style steamed egg custard): served before the meal, this steamed egg custard was as bouncy as pudding yet melted the moment it hit my mouth! There were plump shrimp tucked inside too, which made it fun to pick through. (I personally love Japanese-style steamed egg custard, so this was totally my thing!)

The warm broth that comes with it fills your mouth with a rich, gentle matsutake mushroom aroma the moment you take a sip — it soothes your stomach in the best way.

![Manmok's one-eel rice bowl topped with thick eel](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok-18-1ir25-m-1200.webp)

### Thick grilled eel, fluffy inside

Fluffy inside, impressively thick — the grilled eel. The main eel rice bowl was overwhelming just to look at.

The eel flesh was really thick, so it had a proper chew to it. The outside was grilled just right without burning, while the inside stayed moist and broke apart soft and fluffy in the mouth.

![A piece of nicely grilled eel](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok-19-njcz5-966.webp)

There was no fishy or off smell at all — just the eel's own savory flavor coming through fully. The sweet, salty special sauce soaked into both the rice and the eel, so every bite drew a sigh of satisfaction.

![White kimchi, ginger, and other side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok-21-m8xsu-966.webp)

### Radish salad, white kimchi, ginger, and sansho pepper

The radish salad and white kimchi served alongside were fantastic. They cut through the richness that eel rice bowl can sometimes have with a crisp, spicy-tangy kick, so I could enjoy it right down to the last bite without getting tired of it.

Ginger is a must with eel! And the radish went really well with it too — everything was delicate and delicious! Eel rice bowl can sometimes be too salty or have an overly sharp soy sauce flavor, but Manmok's wasn't like that at all — it was smooth and delicious!

![Sansho pepper set on the table](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok-22-b0v3w-966.webp)

Sprinkling a little of the sansho pepper on the table over the eel to your taste adds a subtle, tingling aroma that blends with the eel's savory flavor for even deeper richness.

## Dessert is matcha or black tea ice cream

![Matcha ice cream served for dessert](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok/seolleung-eel-rice-chawanmushi-manmok-23-1w9q5-966.webp)

For dessert, they offer matcha or black tea ice cream! And the ice cream itself is so classy and delicious!><

I really want to eat it again, haha! The flavor was intense and even the dessert was perfect at this restaurant!

## Final thoughts

Manmok gave me a deeply flavorful eel rice bowl in an upscale atmosphere. Served in a neat, course-style format, I'd strongly recommend it for a lunch near Daechi-dong, a proper group dinner near Seonleung Station, or a solo eel rice bowl treat in Gangnam. If you need a solid boost of energy, this place is worth a visit.
