## Tareudang: a giant fruit mochi takeout shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju

Tareudang is a takeout-only shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju selling Hwangnam daewang mochi (giant royal mochi) — that is, giant fruit mochi. I was wandering aimlessly around Hwangnidang-gil when I heard there was giant fruit mochi here, so I stopped in.

## Buy 4 or more mochi at Tareudang and save 500 won each

At Tareudang, buying 4 or more mochi gets you ₩500 off per piece, apparently. It felt a bit like being pushed into buying 4+, but since it was delicious, I didn't mind — Gyeongju's giant mochi dessert.

Maybe because it was a late visit, a lot of flavors were sold out, but they weren't ones I'd wanted anyway, so it didn't matter much. Funny how being told 'no' made me suddenly want flavors I'd never even thought about before. The ones that were out somehow looked even more delicious.

## What's on Tareudang's menu: fruit mochi and tarts

Gyeongju dessert shop Tareudang's menu board had a lot of giant fruit mochi options — gold kiwi, pineapple, shine muscat, Dubai raw chocolate, peach, mango and more. Plenty of tart varieties too, like egg tart and cheesecake tart. Their butter rice cake seems famous too, but it was sold out. Ugh.

## The order: fig, mango and peach, two of each

I ordered two of each at Tareudang: fig 6.0, mango 8.5, peach 6.5. They made and packed them the moment I ordered. Eye-catching from the start with their big, bold look — the giant chapssaltteok (glutinous rice cake).

I thought I'd reuse the cooler bag for something else next time, but I pulled the strong velcro open once and it just ripped. Ugh, come on.

### Fig mochi, 6,000 won — white wrapper

Gyeongju dessert Tareudang's fig 6.0 came wrapped in white paper, with an extra layer of plastic wrap on top — double packaging. Seems like each flavor gets its own wrapper color. The fig chapssaltteok had a nice texture from the seeds you could bite into. The chewy-yet-soft rice cake skin paired better with the moist fig than I expected.

### Mango mochi, 8,500 won — orange wrapper

Gyeongju dessert Tareudang's mango 8.5 came in an orange wrapper. I'd just eaten mango bingsu (shaved ice) right before, and this had a whole different charm — mango chapssaltteok. True to their claim of using only fresh ingredients daily, the sweetness seemed on point.

## Best of the three: the peach giant mochi that drips with juice

Tareudang's mochi are bigger than usual mochi, so even one is hugely satisfying. If I had to pick one favorite of the three, it would be the peach. 'Drips' feels more accurate than 'trickles' for the juice explosion — a giant chapssaltteok soft enough you can feel it through your fingers. Not a Gyeongju chapssal mochi you can eat neatly, but I ate it very happily anyway. A fresh-fruit dessert worth trying at least once on a Gyeongju trip — Hwangnam mochi at Tareudang.

## How to store Tareudang's fruit mochi

Best to keep them somewhere cool and eat them the same day, but if you're saving them for the next day, refrigerate. Taking them out to room temperature before eating apparently softens the rice cake skin a bit. For longer storage, freeze — though honestly, at that point I'd recommend just eating something else.
