## In short

Ichigyu Balsan Station Branch is a Japanese sirloin gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) restaurant a two-minute walk from Exit 1 of Balsan Station in Gangseo, Seoul. Tired of ordering pork cutlet for the kids, the writer went for the sirloin gyukatsu and hamburg omurice instead, searing each slice with Isigny butter on the tabletop charcoal grill and sharing the thick hamburg steak and fluffy omelet rice with their child. Ichigyu works just as well for a family meal out as it does for a date.

Eating out with my kid so often, I noticed we'd been ordering pork cutlet basically every single time. Don't get me wrong, pork cutlet is great, but after a while I wanted something a little different. So today I went looking for a Japanese-style menu that would still work well with a kid, and ended up at Ichigyu Balsan Station Branch, known as a Balsan gyukatsu spot. Let's go!

## Where is Ichigyu Balsan Station Branch, and is there parking?

Ichigyu Balsan Station Branch is about a 2-minute walk from Exit 1 of Balsan Station. Hours are 11:30–21:30, with a break time of 15:00–17:00, and last order is 14:30 / 21:00.

It's really close to the station, so getting there by public transit was easy, and if you drive, there's free parking for up to 2 hours too — handy.

## Inside Ichigyu: the space and the seating

The exterior alone gives off strong Japanese restaurant vibes!

Walking in, the first thing that caught my eye was the dedicated cast-iron grill for gyukatsu!

Every table has its own grill for cooking the meat yourselves, which gave it a totally different atmosphere from a typical Japanese restaurant. Little Japanese-style decor pieces were scattered around too, so it was fun to just look around the space, not just eat the food. I thought it'd be a great spot for a special date or a different kind of night out.

## Ichigyu's menu and how to order by QR code

Along with their signature gyukatsu, Ichigyu had a range of Japanese dishes — steak, omurice, curry, soba, and more. I was especially excited that the gyukatsu is made using only sirloin. Ordering was simple through the table QR code! I went with the gyukatsu and the hamburg omurice.

## Unlimited rice refills at Ichigyu

Before the food arrived, they lit the cast-iron grill first, and then brought out warm rice. The initial serving was already generous, and they told us rice refills are unlimited.

## Sirloin gyukatsu grilled with Isigny butter at the table

![A plate of sirloin gyukatsu served medium-rare](https://img.superchart.com/images/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu-10-c48j0-900.webp)

Finally, the gyukatsu I'd been looking forward to arrived! It's served medium-rare by default, so you cook it further on the grill to your own taste.

![A piece of gyukatsu being grilled on the tabletop grill](https://img.superchart.com/images/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu-11-1m1ig-900.webp)

And you can't leave out the Isigny butter here!

![Isigny butter placed on top of the gyukatsu](https://img.superchart.com/images/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu-12-wggl2-1200.webp)

Placing a bit of butter on the meat and grilling it briefly let the butter's nutty aroma soak gently into the gyukatsu — genuinely delicious. The staff recommended grilling each piece for about 7–8 seconds, but since I was eating with my kid, I cooked mine a bit more well-done. Grilling it yourself so you can hit your preferred doneness is part of the fun of gyukatsu.

![A piece of sirloin gyukatsu topped with wasabi](https://img.superchart.com/images/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu-14-15cuw-900.webp)

![Cross-section of gyukatsu dipped in salt](https://img.superchart.com/images/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu-15-hoaqc-900.webp)

![Crispy coating on a well-done piece of gyukatsu](https://img.superchart.com/images/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu-16-1kee2-900.webp)

The gyukatsu came with a house sauce, plus wasabi, chili, and salt to mix and match as you like. I tried several combinations piece by piece, and they all worked well.

Being sirloin, the meat itself wasn't tough at all — really tender! Truly the textbook crispy-outside, juicy-inside cutlet!!! The combination of the tender sirloin and the crunchy coating was so good. I kind of regretted not ordering the jumbo size.

## Hamburg omurice shared with a child

![Hamburg omurice topped with a hamburg steak](https://img.superchart.com/images/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu/ichigyu-balsan-hambak-omurice-gyukatsu-17-s6w9y-900.webp)

I ordered the hamburg omurice to share with my kid! Just from the way it looked in the bowl, it was seriously generous!! A thick hamburg steak and a fluffy egg omelet sitting on top of vegetable fried rice — just looking at it made me feel full, haha.

The fluffy texture of the omelet coming together with the vegetable fried rice and hamburg steak made it delicious for adults too, not just kids. I personally love a good egg omelet, and this one was thick and generous, so I was really satisfied!

The sauce that came with it was tangy and a little sweet too — a perfect match for the omurice!

## Who is Ichigyu Balsan Station Branch best for?

Ichigyu Balsan Station Branch was a great choice when I wanted something special in Japanese food. Grilling the sirloin gyukatsu yourself at the table made the whole meal feel like both an experience and a good meal at once.

The gyukatsu's crisp-outside, tender-inside texture was great, and being able to try it with butter, salt, wasabi, and chili in different combinations kept it from getting boring. On top of that, the restaurant has an upscale, distinctly Japanese atmosphere, so I'd strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a good date spot near Balsan Station!

If you're craving something a little different in Japanese food, or want to try grilling your own gyukatsu at the table, give Ichigyu Balsan Station Branch — a well-known Balsan gyukatsu spot — a visit. That's a wrap for today, thanks for the meal!
