## In short

Somunnan Gamjatang is a gamjatang (pork bone soup) restaurant near Sangye Station on Deokreung-ro in Nowon, Seoul. The meat pulled cleanly off the bone, the hand-torn dough dumplings were a fun addition, and the broth kept getting refilled without asking, though the fried rice at the end tasted a bit bland. Overall a satisfying, hearty meal for a group.

I was craving something hot and filling this time, so while looking around for good Korean restaurants in Nowon, I ended up at Somunnan Gamjatang. The restaurant is near Sangye Station, so it's a convenient spot for anyone eating around Nowon or Junggye-dong.

Something as hearty as gamjatang is great for eating with family or a bigger group. It's a good place to keep in mind for when you're in Nowon and craving warm soup, haha. And the moment the gamjatang arrived, the portion size alone was satisfying. Loads of bone pieces too — before I even started eating, I could tell I'd be properly full today~

The interior was spacious overall, with the typical gamjatang restaurant vibe. Neatly arranged tables lined up in rows, making it feel comfortable for families or larger groups. When I visited, there were also some office groups having a work dinner, and the space and table spacing seemed generous enough for that too.

It's not exactly a super atmospheric restaurant, but more a place to sit comfortably and eat a hearty bowl of gamjatang! So if you're looking for a Korean restaurant in Nowon and also scouting family meals or work dinner spots, Somunnan Gamjatang seems like a solid, safe choice.

### Does the meat come off the bone easily?

With gamjatang, the broth matters, but what really counts is how easily and how tender the meat on the bone is. This was personally the part I was most satisfied with at Somunnan Gamjatang. The meat was so soft that it came off with just a light touch of the chopsticks.

Sometimes when I eat gamjatang, the meat is tough and I have to wrestle with the bone for a while, but here it came off relatively easily. The portions were generous too, so if you're looking for a Korean restaurant in Nowon where you can eat your fill, this should satisfy you!

## The fun of the sujebi at Somunnan Gamjatang's main branch

![Hand-torn sujebi dough being added to the pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/somunnan-gamjatang-junggye-hand-torn-sujebi/somunnan-gamjatang-junggye-hand-torn-sujebi-11-2qcfa-900.webp)

Another fun part here was the sujebi (hand-torn dough dumplings)! Instead of coming already made, you get dough that you tear off little by little yourself and drop into the gamjatang. Don't dump it all in at once — tear off thin pieces bit by bit and toss them into the bubbling broth. This was surprisingly fun, haha.

![Sujebi cooked in the gamjatang broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/somunnan-gamjatang-junggye-hand-torn-sujebi/somunnan-gamjatang-junggye-hand-torn-sujebi-12-1ipm0-900.webp)

The sujebi, soaked in gamjatang broth, turned chewy and was great to fish out between bites of meat. If you like gamjatang among Nowon's Korean restaurant options, definitely try adding sujebi. And of course, as you keep simmering and eating, the broth naturally goes down.

### How does the broth refill work?

I liked that even though I didn't say anything, the staff noticed partway through and refilled the broth on their own. This kind of small detail seems minor, but it's genuinely convenient while eating. I didn't have to call anyone over whenever the broth got low — they kept it flowing without interrupting the meal, which I really appreciated.

## Soft meat and delicious kimchi too

![Kimchi and kkakdugi served as side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/somunnan-gamjatang-junggye-hand-torn-sujebi/somunnan-gamjatang-junggye-hand-torn-sujebi-14-10qs0-900.webp)

Both the kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) were also tasty. When you're eating a soup dish, it's a bit of a letdown if the kimchi isn't good. A bite of meat, then a piece of kimchi, and every so often the kkakdugi — the combination worked well.

## An honest take on the fried rice, which was a little bland

![Fried rice ordered to finish the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/somunnan-gamjatang-junggye-hand-torn-sujebi/somunnan-gamjatang-junggye-hand-torn-sujebi-15-1ktl2-900.webp)

By the time I'd finished the gamjatang and the sujebi, I was already pretty full... but skipping fried rice when there's leftover broth? That's not really an option, haha. Rice is always the finishing move for Koreans, so I ordered it without hesitation. That said, the fried rice was a bit bland for my taste personally. (You can probably tell from the photo — the color looks a little light, right?) Maybe because the gamjatang broth before it had such a strong flavor, the seasoning felt relatively weak by comparison after that. I like bold flavors even in fried rice, so I wish it had been a bit stronger! But that's completely a matter of personal taste.

Still, the main dish, gamjatang, had tender meat and a generous portion, plus the hand-torn sujebi made it more satisfying. The kimchi and kkakdugi were tasty too, and I liked that they kept the broth topped up without needing to ask.

If you're craving hot broth and plenty of tender meat and looking for a Korean restaurant in Nowon, Somunnan Gamjatang is the kind of place that comes to mind. It's especially good for a hearty group meal, or whenever you're around Nowon or Junggye-dong and craving gamjatang. This feels like a place I'll think of even more once it gets colder :)
