## In short

Vinovine is a course dining restaurant with all-private-room seating, in the basement of a building on Banpo-daero 23-gil near Seocho Station in Seoul. Over a two-person dinner course with two glasses of house wine, the meal moved slowly through abalone tart, smoked watermelon salad, shrimp in bisque sauce, Jeju white snapper, pecorino Genovese spaghetti and hanwoo (Korean beef) striploin steak. Vinovine is a quiet place to talk over dinner, and worth coming back to.

I hadn't seen my friend in ages, so we went back and forth on where to go and ended up at Vinovine, a well-known dining spot in Seocho-dong. Since it had been so long, I wanted somewhere quiet where we could talk and eat slowly rather than somewhere loud — and this place, where every single seat is a private room, was exactly right. We ordered the two-person dinner course plus two glasses of house wine.

## Why Vinovine works for catching up with a friend

Vinovine is underground, and right from the entrance there are wine bottles and cork decorations that make the atmosphere feel really cozy. What I liked most, though, was that every seat is its own separate room. When you finally meet up with a friend after ages, you've got so much to catch up on, haha — we didn't have to worry about neighboring tables and could just chat comfortably while we ate.

Every single seat there really is set up as a private room, so it suited a date or a quiet gathering perfectly.

The basic table setting was already in place!

We ordered the dinner course — there was a wine-pairing course too, but since we were saving room for round two, we just went with the house wine on its own.

## The starters: abalone tart and a playful opening

![Abalone tart and cocoa choux with chicken liver mousse starters](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-06-1rngz-966.webp)

![Bite-sized course starters plated together](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-07-1je24-966.webp)

First came small bite-sized dishes: an abalone tart and a cocoa choux filled with chicken liver mousse. Just from the look of them, you could tell — "ah, the course is starting."

The abalone tart had that distinctive chewy abalone texture, and with tofu and mascarpone cheese added in, it was creamier and more savory than I expected.

The cocoa choux with chicken liver mousse felt like an odd combination at first, but the sweetness of the fig jam made it work surprisingly well. It was only a bite each, but the flavors weren't simple at all right from the first dish — my friend and I started off saying, "oh, this place is pretty good."

## Smoked watermelon salad, the surprise of the course

Next up was a smoked watermelon and stracciatella cheese salad. Watermelon in a salad sounded a bit unusual at first, but once I tried it, it turned out to be exactly right for the middle of the course.

The watermelon was refreshing, and underneath was a layer of soft stracciatella cheese that added a salty, savory note. Prosciutto chips and pistachios on top kept the texture from getting boring. It felt like it cleanly reset our palates after the rich starters — this dish honestly stuck with me more than I expected.

## Shrimp in bisque sauce, the dish that calls for wine

![Shrimp dish served with bisque sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-09-op1t1-966.webp)

![Low-temperature cooked shrimp with rich bisque sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-10-d9sqq-966.webp)

One dish I especially loved that day was the shrimp with bisque sauce. The shrimp was plump but also very tender, likely from being cooked low-temperature.

The real highlight, though, was the sauce. Made from the shrimp heads and shells, the bisque sauce was incredibly rich and deep.

Taking a bite of shrimp with a scoop of sauce brought out a big hit of umami. This was around when we started sipping the house wine, and the rich shrimp sauce paired with it better than I expected — my friend and I slowly worked through our glasses together while eating.

## Vinovine's house-made sourdough bread

Partway through, warm sourdough bread came out, and it seemed like a small thing but was genuinely delicious.

Crisp on the outside, chewy inside — a bit of the butter and Maldon salt served alongside brought out its nutty flavor even more.

Having bread to nibble between courses while we kept talking naturally slowed the whole meal down, which I really liked.

## Jeju white snapper and its texture

The fish course was a Jeju white snapper steak. The outside was extremely crisp while the inside stayed moist — a clear contrast in texture.

The part with the scales crisped up like a cracker, which was fun to bite into. It came with tomato, basil and zucchini, and the staff recommended eating them together in one bite, so I did — with the tomato's acidity and the herbs added in, it tasted much cleaner than the fish alone.

## Pecorino Genovese spaghetti: rich and nutty

![A plate of pecorino Genovese spaghetti](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-15-v1ghn-966.webp)

![White Genovese-style pasta topped with cheese](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-16-17n35-966.webp)

The pasta was pecorino Genovese spaghetti.

From the name I assumed it'd taste like basil pesto, but it was actually a white Genovese style made with slow-cooked onion and meat — totally different.

![Pecorino pasta tossed together with the sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-17-7b07a-966.webp)

The meat had broken down until it was really tender, and the salty cheese soaked deep into the noodles, making it rich and savory. The staff told us to toss the sauce and pasta together well before it cooled — and sure enough, eating it warm really brought out the cheese's flavor.

Personally, it was a bit heavy, which made a sip of wine go down even better.

## The main: hanwoo (Korean beef) striploin steak

The main dish was a hanwoo (Korean beef) striploin steak. Even after eating through quite a lot of the course already, seeing the steak arrive got me excited all over again, haha.

![Hanwoo striploin steak served as the main course](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-18-81fz7-966.webp)

The meat was cooked to just the right doneness — tender with plenty of juice.

![Steak served with black garlic purée and potato crumble](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-19-grq1s-966.webp)

![Striploin steak plated with balsamic mini onions](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-20-1uqvn-966.webp)

The black garlic purée served alongside had a slight sweetness with deep flavor, and the potato crumble added crunch. Eating it with the balsamic-marinated mini onions cut through the richness of the meat, so I could finish every last bite without feeling weighed down.

## Two glasses of house wine with the course

![Two glasses of Vinovine's house wine](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-21-1niji-966.webp)

![A glass of wine paired with the course meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-22-yunzw-966.webp)

Since it was such a long-overdue meetup with a friend, it felt like too much of a waste to just eat and go, so we ordered two glasses of house wine as well. With the course running through seafood, pasta and steak, there was real fun in pairing a glass with each dish. Sipping slowly, eating, talking, waiting for the next course — that whole rhythm was genuinely nice. Vinovine also offers wine by the glass, which was great for us since ordering a whole bottle felt like a bit much.

## How the course ends: dessert at Vinovine

![Hojicha ice cream and warabi mochi dessert](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-23-1vz58-966.webp)

Dessert was hojicha ice cream and warabi mochi. The hojicha flavor was fairly strong but not too sweet, which made it a perfect way to close out the course. The warabi mochi was chewy and the nougatine was crisp, adding more texture variety.

![Final course dessert topped with nougatine](https://img.superchart.com/images/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine/seocho-vinovine-dinner-course-house-wine-24-sr85g-966.webp)

Even though I was already pretty full after the steak, somehow there was still room for dessert, haha. It was sweet but not too heavy, which left the meal feeling clean at the end.

When you meet a friend after a long time, you want good food and you want to talk quietly for hours, right? Vinovine's private rooms made that easy, and there was real enjoyment in hearing each course explained and eating slowly through it, with the house wine adding just enough extra. It felt less like a regular dinner and more like a slightly special date. If you're near Seocho Station looking for a spot to catch up with a friend, go on a date, or have a quiet dinner, Vinovine is one I'd think of again.
