## In short

Ongdarae Jjimdak is a jjimdak restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, five minutes from Hongik University Station. I tried mild S jjimdak for 1–2 people with 6,000 won cheese and cheese rice cakes, followed by Ongbap and free coffee, tea, and scones. Verdict: a satisfying place to finish a hearty meal with dessert.

When you want a generous, filling meal in Hongdae, there is nothing quite like jjimdak (braised chicken)! With chicken, glass noodles, and rice cakes all in one dish, it is perfect for sharing with a group. We even added cheese and cheese rice cakes, then properly finished things off with Ongbap, which is a bit like fried rice 😉

Hongdae has so many great restaurants that choosing one can be difficult, but Ongdarae Jjimdak (옹다래찜닭) stood out to me even more because the meal is so generous and you can enjoy self-serve dessert afterward!

## How close is it to Hongik University Station?

It is only a five-minute walk from Hongik University Station, so it is very easy to get to! I visited with high expectations because the reviews were so good, and it was just as satisfying as I had hoped!

Before the jjimdak arrives, they bring out salad and pickled radish!

## How spicy is the mild jjimdak?

> Ongdarae Jjimdak

We ordered the Ongdarae Jjimdak S, which serves 1–2 people. I also liked that you can choose the spice level to suit your taste. I ordered mild, and it was much less spicy than I expected—mild enough for people who are not very good with spicy food to enjoy without any pressure.

![Photo of mild Ongdarae Jjimdak](https://img.superchart.com/images/hongdae-cheese-ongdarae-jjimdak/hongdae-cheese-ongdarae-jjimdak-08-1hq6v-900.webp)

I expected the mild level to still be fairly spicy, but it barely had any heat when I tried it. Instead, I could comfortably enjoy the sweet-and-salty jjimdak sauce. If jjimdak seasoning is too intense, you can get tired of it as you eat, but this one was seasoned just right, making it easy to enjoy with the chicken and all the different add-ins. The chicken had soaked up the sauce nicely, so it was delicious with rice, and dipping the glass noodles and rice cakes into the sauce was fun too!

## Jjimdak with cheese and cheese rice cakes

Jjimdak alone felt a little incomplete, so we added ₩6,000 worth of cheese and ordered cheese rice cakes too. Adding cheese completely changed the look of the dish. 🧀 The melted cheese stretching over the hot jjimdak looked so good that I took photos the moment it arrived, haha.

The nutty, soft cheese went so well with the sweet-and-salty jjimdak sauce. The cheese rice cakes were especially fun to pick out one by one as we ate, since you get both the chewy rice cake and the rich cheese flavor. Personally, rather than ordering jjimdak on its own, I would recommend the cheese add-on for cheese lovers. The rich jjimdak sauce becomes even smoother with the cheese, and I kept reaching for more.

## Finish with Ongbap!

After finishing the jjimdak, Ongbap is something you absolutely cannot pass up. Ongbap is a little different from ordinary fried rice: rice is pressed into a thick layer in a frying pan, like nurungji (crispy scorched rice), then topped with stir-fried kimchi, perilla leaves, and roasted seaweed flakes. It had a charm all its own, different from fried rice mixed with the leftover jjimdak sauce.

Because the rice is pressed thickly in the pan, the bottom keeps that nutty, crispy nurungji texture. On top, the stir-fried kimchi, perilla leaves, and seaweed flakes add even more flavor. The gentle aroma of perilla leaves, tangy and savory stir-fried kimchi, and nutty seaweed flakes made it the perfect final dish after jjimdak.

Even though I had eaten plenty of jjimdak, somehow there was still room for Ongbap…😂 If you want to enjoy not only the jjimdak but the final course properly too, try the Ongbap as well.

## Free self-serve dessert after the meal

Another thing I really liked about Ongdarae Jjimdak! After your meal, you can use the self-serve dessert bar set up in the restaurant. Along with coffee and tea, they even have free scones, so you can have a simple dessert time after eating.

Especially when several people are meeting in Hongdae, it can be surprisingly inconvenient to find and move to a separate café after the meal. Having this self-serve dessert area felt really convenient, so I thought it would also be a nice choice for a Hongdae work dinner or a gathering with friends.

## From jjimdak to dessert in one go

Hongdae has such a wide range of restaurants, but when you are looking for a place where several people can share one generous dish, Ongdarae Jjimdak seems like a good option. If you are looking for restaurants in Hongdae Seoul near Hongik University Station, it is easy to reach, and the selectable spice levels make it suitable for a group with different tastes.

I chose mild, and since it was barely spicy, I think it would feel less intimidating for people who cannot handle spicy food well. Adding cheese and cheese rice cakes brings in a soft, nutty flavor, then you can finish with nurungji-style Ongbap! Plus, free coffee, tea, and scones are available at the self-serve bar, so I was happy that everything from the meal to dessert could be taken care of in one place.
