## In short

Susan Sadang Main Branch is an izakaya near Sadang Station in Dongjak, Seoul, serving raw shrimp sashimi and aged sashimi. Over a Friday night with friends the table ordered raw shrimp sashimi, ankimo maki, squid sashimi, mala beef tendon soup, two green apple highballs and cheongha, and the squid sashimi and the 40,000 won mala beef tendon soup were the biggest hits. Friday evenings can bring a wait and slower dishes at Susan Sadang Main Branch, so booking through Naver Reservation is the safer move.

I'm about to leave Sadang after living here for a long time... TT so my friend and I went for one last izakaya hangout before I go! My friend said she wanted raw shrimp sashimi, so I went looking and found Susan Sadang Main Branch 🦐. Turns out it's apparently a famous Sadang bar for izakaya food?

Susan Sadang Main Branch had a pretty generous portion of raw shrimp sashimi, and honestly the squid sashimi and mala beef tendon soup were also better than expected. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but after eating I understood why haha. It's a solid spot in Sadang for a gathering with close friends, a Cheongmo (young mothers' group) meetup, or a work dinner, so I wanted to record it here!

## Where Susan Sadang Main Branch is, its hours and the room

Susan Sadang Main Branch is an izakaya at 17 Nambusunhwan-ro271ga-gil, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, using both the main first floor and a basement annex. Hours are Mon–Thu 16:00–01:00, Fri–Sat 15:00–02:00, Sun 15:00–01:00.

Susan Sadang Main Branch has both a first-floor main area and a basement annex. It didn't feel huge, but with the basement space too, it looked like a good spot for larger groups. There was only one restroom, but it was clean and fine to use when I visited!

Once we sat down, they gave us each a glass of sake before the meal 🍶. I love this kind of welcome drink lol.

## Friday at 8:30pm: how long was the wait?

When we arrived at Susan Sadang Main Branch at 8:30pm on a Friday, there was a wait. One party was ahead of us.

The reason I ended up here this time was really simple lol. My friend suddenly wanted raw shrimp sashimi, and while looking it up I checked on a whim and found it was also on Superchart. Since we could get a discount and it seemed like a good place to write a review, we decided on the spot lol.

They said a table would open up soon, so we wandered around Sadang for a bit and came back — but still no table lol. Then one party left, and since the group ahead of us in line had already moved on somewhere else, we snagged the spot right away lol. Just a heads up that Friday evenings can come with a wait.

## Green apple highball: too sweet, so they mixed a new one

We first ordered raw shrimp sashimi, ankimo maki, and two green apple highballs. The highballs came out first, and since it was called a green apple highball, I imagined something fizzy and refreshing.

![Green apple highball at Susan Sadang Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji-07-pg7b5-900.webp)

But it had less fizz than expected, and more importantly, it was way too sweet for our taste ㅠㅠ. The artificial sweetness overpowered the alcohol, so we told the staff it was too sweet — and they immediately offered to remake it! I was so grateful for that 🥹. It could've been a hassle for them, but they redid it right away and were super kind about it too, which honestly made us feel even better. That kind of service really sticks with you haha. Top-tier service 👍🏻

## 🦐 The glassy raw shrimp sashimi at Susan Sadang

After a short wait, the raw shrimp sashimi finally arrived!! The moment it landed on the table, my friend and I both went 'waaah' and dug in excitedly lol.

![Freshly served plate of raw shrimp sashimi](https://img.superchart.com/images/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji-08-1ktfx-900.webp)

The visuals alone were gorgeous ✨. More than that, the portion was surprisingly generous! Susan isn't exactly a cheap place, but seeing the amount of raw shrimp sashimi made the price make a lot more sense.

![Close-up of the generous raw shrimp sashimi portion](https://img.superchart.com/images/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji-09-191or-900.webp)

![Raw shrimp sashimi with a sweet-shrimp texture](https://img.superchart.com/images/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji-10-1b5xu-900.webp)

Last time I had raw shrimp sashimi in Yongsan, it had a firmer, springier texture, but here it leaned more toward that sweet-shrimp kind of feel. A bit richer and sweeter? But not mushy at all — that distinctive sweet flavor of raw shrimp really came through, and it was so good 🦐. My friend and I kept saying 'seasonal food really has to be eaten in season' the whole time we ate lol. I only tagged along because she wanted it, but honestly I ended up loving it just as much haha.

## 🍣 Ankimo maki with cabbage, a Susan Sadang twist

Ankimo maki is one of my favorite things! It's something my boyfriend and I order pretty much anywhere it's on the menu lol. Naturally it was delicious here too, but what was a bit unusual was that there was cabbage inside the ankimo! A combination I'd never had before, so the texture felt a little new.

Rather than a standard ankimo maki, it felt like Susan tried to put its own spin on each individual dish. That was a fun detail haha.

Also, my friend put ankimo on top of the raw shrimp — a real flavor connoisseur move..

### 🍶 Cheongha tastes best on the rocks

We also ordered a bottle of cheongha along the way — I like drinking cheongha on the rocks, chilled with ice lol. That's how I usually drink it with my boyfriend, so I suggested my friend try it that way too. Loaded up with ice and nice and cold, it was genuinely delicious lol. My friend tried it and loved it too lol. Some of you probably already know this trick, but if it's your first time, definitely recommend it. It's a really cool, clean taste!

## 🦑 Came for the shrimp, fell for the squid sashimi

Another friend joined us, so we also ordered squid sashimi.

![Plate of squid sashimi at Susan Sadang Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji-13-zuj8c-900.webp)

Out of everything we ate that day, the squid sashimi was surprisingly the best!! We came for the raw shrimp sashimi, but I can't imagine not having tried the squid sashimi lol. It was really chewy and springy with a sweet flavor that I loved.

![Close-up of the chewy squid sashimi](https://img.superchart.com/images/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji-14-tbd6a-900.webp)

The distinctive texture of squid really came through, and it got sweeter the more you chewed, making it such a great drinking snack. The friends who came with us all agreed it was delicious too, so I think I'll order this again next time lol.

## 🌶️ Ending with the signature 40,000 won mala beef tendon soup

The last dish was the mala beef tendon soup.

![Mala beef tendon soup before boiling](https://img.superchart.com/images/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji-15-15f4s-900.webp)

This seems to be one of Susan's signature dishes. But we also waited quite a while for this one lol. It took so long that we even checked whether our order had actually gone through, and then it finally arrived. Being a Friday, the whole kitchen was probably slammed, so food came out a bit slow overall. We had ordered plenty of other things already, so snacking while we waited wasn't a problem haha.

When the mala beef tendon soup finally showed up, the visual was seriously impressive lol.

![Mala beef tendon soup loaded with tendon](https://img.superchart.com/images/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji-16-1l4qg-900.webp)

At ₩40,000, my first reaction was 'oh... that's a bit pricey.' I figured it was because of the beef tendon, but once it arrived and I saw the portion, it made sense. The amount was generous, and there was more tendon in there than expected! (Once it started boiling we just kept eating, so I only have the first photo, sorry...)

The broth wasn't the type where the mala spice hits you super hard — it had just the right amount of mala aroma, which I actually preferred. Not overly intense, the broth itself was tasty, and the tendon was generous, so I got why this is the best-seller haha.

## 🥢 Muksabap, the receipt-review freebie worth writing for

There's one more thing I really want to mention lol. As part of a receipt review event, they give you muksabap (jellied dish), and it's genuinely a gem.

![Muksabap given as a receipt-review perk](https://img.superchart.com/images/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji/susan-sadang-hanchi-marasuji-17-ikr3x-900.webp)

At first I thought it would just be a standard free muksabap, but I was genuinely surprised after tasting it. The seasoning wasn't like a typical muksabap — it felt more like mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) sauce. Piled high with vegetables on top, it was sweet, tangy, and refreshingly cold — really delicious. The menu description said if you have leftover sashimi, you can add it in and eat it like mulhoe, and after tasting it, I completely understood why they wrote that lol.

## 🎵 Why Sadang works for a group night out

A flavor that would genuinely pair well with leftover sashimi mixed in! Even as a free side dish, it left quite an impression on me.

When we were there, the music was mostly old-school songs lol. Maybe because we're around that age, we kept singing along whenever a familiar one came on lol. BGM actually matters a lot at a bar, doesn't it? Rather than being too loud or playing only new songs, having these familiar tracks made it easy to chat and hang out with friends.

The place itself isn't huge, but with the main floor and the basement annex, it looked like a solid option for group gatherings. Especially if you're looking for a spot in Sadang to have drinks with friends or host a Cheongmo-style meetup with several people, this could work well. You can also book through Naver Reservation, which makes it easier to plan ahead!

## 💛 Final verdict on Susan Sadang Main Branch

I only came here because my friend wanted raw shrimp sashimi, but pretty much everything we ordered turned out to be satisfying. The raw shrimp sashimi had a generous portion and a nice sweetness, the ankimo maki had that signature Susan touch with the cabbage, and the squid sashimi was genuinely better than expected. The mala beef tendon soup felt pricey at ₩40,000 at first, but the portion and amount of tendon made it understandable.

More than anything, I appreciated that they remade the highball right away when we said it was too sweet, and the staff were kind and attentive throughout. It's not a cheap place, but after eating there, the menu felt worth the price. My friends who came along thought it was great too, and later on were even looking up other branches lol.

We visited for the raw shrimp sashimi, but next time I'd love to have the squid sashimi or the mala beef tendon soup again 🦐. If you're looking for a place in Sadang for good aged sashimi snacks with drinks, or a spot for a friends' gathering or Cheongmo meetup, Susan Sadang Main Branch is worth checking out!!
