## In short

Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno Main Branch is a pork belly Korean BBQ restaurant in Jongno, Seoul. After a 30-minute estimated wait at 7 PM, I had thick pork belly grilled over charcoal by the staff with potato wraps, minari, kimchi, and more. Verdict: a convenient, good-value choice for an easy group meal in Jongno.

Finding a pork belly restaurant in Jongno is not difficult. The question is, “Which one do you choose among all those meat places?” There are plenty with reasonable prices, plenty of long-running old establishments, and plenty of Korean BBQ spots with a current, trendy mood. So this time, rather than choosing somewhere simply because it was famous, I looked at how seriously it takes the meat itself and how convenient it would be for a get-together in Jongno.

That brought me to Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno Main Branch (참돼짓간 종로본점) near Jongno 3-ga. To give you the conclusion first, what stayed with me here was not simply the taste of one piece of pork belly. Thick-cut meat, charcoal, staff grilling it for you, sides such as minari, kimchi, and potato wraps, plus easy access from Jongno 3-ga Station. Each is a small difference on its own, but by the end of the meal, together they gave me the impression of a place that takes meat quite seriously.

## The 30-second read

Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno Main Branch is a pork belly specialist that is easy to reach from Jongno 3-ga Station. When I visited at around 7 PM, there was a wait; Catchtable showed one party ahead of me and an estimated 30-minute wait.

Three things stood out especially during my visit: the charcoal, the fact that the staff grill the meat themselves, and the variety of ways to eat it with the sides. If your only criterion is the absolute cheapest pork belly, you may choose differently. But if you want easy access in Jongno along with meat quality and a comfortable meal, it is worth a look.

## A location that matters when making plans in Jongno

Jongno has so many good places to eat. From Ikseon-dong to Jongno 3-ga, Jonggak, and Euljiro, restaurants keep going as soon as you start walking. But a dinner appointment with several people is another story. It starts with one question: “Where should we meet?”

This was the first thing I liked when visiting Cham Dwaejitgan. As in my photo, it was easy to find after coming out of Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 2-1. Jongno 3-ga is served by Lines 1, 3, and 5, so it is quite convenient for meeting people coming from different areas. When you are having dinner with colleagues after work or meeting friends in Jongno, that accessibility is a bigger advantage than you might think. More than simply a good Jongno pork belly spot, it first struck me as a meat restaurant that is easy for people to meet at.

## A real wait at 7 PM

I visited at around 7 PM. Looking at Catchtable at the entrance, I saw one party currently waiting and an estimated time of 30 minutes. Inside, many tables were already full. There were people from office workers to groups of friends enjoying dinner, and it really felt like Jongno at after-work time.

Fortunately, I did not need to stand at the entrance the whole time. You register your mobile number and receive a KakaoTalk notification when it is your turn, so managing the wait was easy. Based on my visit, it would be wise to allow for some waiting around 7 PM. You could even register for the wait and take a quick look around the neighborhood, making use of the Jongno location.

> For a dinner gathering in Jongno, this route seemed nice: arrive at Jongno 3-ga → check the wait → eat → head to Ikseon-dong or Jongno for a second stop.

## The first impression: a space for eating meat

Once inside, rather than flashy interiors that are popular these days, you clearly get the sense that this is a space for eating meat. There is large ventilation equipment connected to each table on the ceiling, and there are quite a few seats. What also caught my eye was the aging refrigerator where the meat was stored. Seeing it full of thick cuts of meat directly raised my expectations before I had even ordered. It felt like something that showed the restaurant’s identity more than simple décor.

## Why the charcoal and staff grilling felt so easy

This was one of the things that impressed me most here: the charcoal. Even with the same pork belly, the flavor can change quite a bit depending on how it is grilled. As the meat goes onto the grill and the charcoal heat comes through, the surface cooks quickly.

And there is one more thing: the staff grill the meat themselves. They cut the thick meat into just the right size as they cook it, so we do not have to keep holding tongs and checking on the meat. It is convenient when eating with friends, but I thought it was an even bigger advantage for a company dinner. No one has to become the designated meat-griller for the day.

> It does not stop at preparing good meat; this is a place that also thinks about how you will grill and eat it. That was the first point that set Cham Dwaejitgan apart for me.

## Watching thick pork belly cook

When the meat arrives, the first thing you notice is its thickness. You can probably tell from the photos, but it is clearly a different direction from thin frozen pork belly. Thick slices with visible layers of fat and lean meat go onto the grill. I especially liked being able to see the fresh meat up close.

As the meat starts cooking, it takes on a golden color on the surface, and the staff cut it into bite-sized pieces. When you are watching pork belly sizzle on the grill, honestly, you do not need a long explanation.

The outside was cooked nicely while the inside retained its juices, giving it the chewy bite distinctive to thick-cut meat.

## How to eat pork belly in a potato wrap

After eating some of the meat, I looked back at the table and found an interesting guide: “potato wrap.” You take a softly grilled potato slice, top it with a piece of well-cooked meat, pickled garlic scapes, and shiitake wasabi, then eat it all together.

![Potato wrap and pork belly combination](https://img.superchart.com/images/jongno-samgyeopsal-evening-waiting-charcoal/jongno-samgyeopsal-evening-waiting-charcoal-17-e3amk-900.webp)

![Pickled garlic scapes and shiitake wasabi sides](https://img.superchart.com/images/jongno-samgyeopsal-evening-waiting-charcoal/jongno-samgyeopsal-evening-waiting-charcoal-18-g0yan-900.webp)

With pork belly, I usually first think of lettuce, meat, and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste). But eating potato with the meat changes the texture and flavor a little. The table also has spicy sauce, mushroom wasabi, garlic scapes, leafy wrap vegetables, and other combinations. It felt as though the restaurant was not simply serving good meat and stopping there, but saying, “Try our meat this way, too.” The thought I had on first seeing the charcoal came back to me: this place is pretty serious about meat.

## Grilling minari, kimchi, and bean sprouts together

For pork belly, I think the sides are just as important as the meat. At Cham Dwaejitgan, I could grill minari (water celery), kimchi, and bean sprouts along with the meat.

![Minari, kimchi, and bean sprouts on the grill](https://img.superchart.com/images/jongno-samgyeopsal-evening-waiting-charcoal/jongno-samgyeopsal-evening-waiting-charcoal-19-1fwto-900.webp)

The fat from the meat meets the kimchi, and adding minari helps cut through the rich flavor of the pork belly. First, you taste the meat itself; then comes the potato wrap; a little later, grilled kimchi and minari. Being able to eat one kind of meat in so many ways was another element that made the meal more satisfying.

## Value that was hard to judge by price alone

Food reviews use the phrase “good value” all the time. But I looked at it a little differently this time. If the goal is simply to eat the cheapest pork belly possible, Jongno has many other choices. But I added up the experience I had at Cham Dwaejitgan: thick-cut meat + charcoal + staff grilling + varied sides + convenient access + a wait system.

Put that way, the story changes. In particular, having the staff grill the meat means more than one simple service. You do not need to burn the meat while talking to friends, and at a company dinner, one person does not need to hold the tongs the entire time. So the value I felt here was closer to “a place where the price includes a lot of experience” than “a place that is good because it is cheap.” I think that is quite an important advantage when comparing Cham Dwaejitgan with other Jongno meat restaurants.

## As a Jongno company dinner venue

This time, I looked at the restaurant from the perspective not of someone having dinner with a friend, but of someone booking a company dinner. Then I noticed other advantages.

- It is close to Jongno 3-ga Station.
- It has enough space for groups to sit together.
- Waits can be managed through Catchtable.
- The staff grill the meat themselves.

These four points are quite important when several people are meeting. Transport is especially convenient for after-work gatherings of office workers around Jongno and Euljiro. So it felt like a very practical option not only for drinks with friends, but also for anyone looking for a Jongno company dinner spot or a Jongno 3-ga group venue. Still, there was a real wait when I visited at 7 PM, so if your group is large, I would recommend checking reservations and the wait situation before visiting at peak time.

## Milk thistle hanging from a soju bottle

I found one funny thing during the meal. Something was hanging from a soju bottle, and when I looked closer, it was a milk thistle liver supplement. It even said, “For a lively tomorrow.”

![Milk thistle service hanging from a soju bottle](https://img.superchart.com/images/jongno-samgyeopsal-evening-waiting-charcoal/jongno-samgyeopsal-evening-waiting-charcoal-21-1yxvb-900.webp)

It is not a service directly related to the taste. But it is amusing. It also felt like a small service made by people who understand exactly how customers feel when having pork belly with a glass of soju. A restaurant does not stay memorable only because of its food. A small moment like this becomes a story later: “That place that gave you milk thistle when you ordered soju.” Details like this may be what make you remember a brand.

## Cham Dwaejitgan: who would I recommend it to?

As I left after the meal, I thought back over the visit. What I remembered was not just one piece of pork belly: the easy-to-find location from Jongno 3-ga Station, the actual 7 PM wait, the meat-filled aging refrigerator inside, the thick pork belly, the staff grilling it over charcoal, the potato wraps with minari, kimchi, and bean sprouts, and even the milk thistle on the soju bottle at the end.

Each detail is small. But put them together, and I think I understood a little of what kind of meat restaurant Cham Dwaejitgan is trying to create. It does not stop at preparing good meat; it has considered how to grill it, what to eat it with, and how comfortably people can enjoy it. So for me, Cham Dwaejitgan was less a good-value Jongno pork belly place simply because it was inexpensive and more a Jongno meat restaurant where the experience felt worthwhile for the price paid.

For a day when you want a piece of meat and a drink with friends after work in Jongno, a day when you need somewhere easy to reach for a large group, or a company dinner when you do not want to assign grilling duty to one person. On days like those, I would put it back on the shortlist.

> Jongno has many delicious meat restaurants. So now I go one step beyond “Is it tasty?” and ask, “Why should it be this place?” The answer I found at Cham Dwaejitgan was its approach to meat and the details that make the meal comfortable.

If you want meat flavor, charcoal, the comfort of staff grilling, and easy access all together in Jongno, the value at Cham Dwaejitgan felt quite good.
