## In short

Manmok is a Japanese-style eel rice bowl restaurant near Seonleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul, one to two minutes from Exit 2. On a Saturday around 2pm, the writer and her partner ordered two whole-eel rice bowls (₩39,000 each), piled them with wasabi, ginger, and pickled radish, and rounded off the meal with chawanmushi, matsutake mushroom soup, and ice cream for dessert. A polished wood-toned space that's great for a clean, satisfying meal.

*Manmok, a Gangnam Seonleung Station restaurant*

Manmok is an eel rice bowl restaurant in Gangnam, near Seonleung Station. I visited with my partner for lunch on a beautiful Saturday. The atmosphere is polished and upscale, and the eel rice bowl quality is high and delicious.

![Manmok's deep wood-toned exterior](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-03-1ijb8-900.webp)

## How far is it from Seonleung Station Exit 2?

Manmok is a quick walk from Seonleung Station Exit 2. It only took 1–2 minutes to get there, so accessibility was great.

The exterior has a deep, upscale wood-toned look typical of eel restaurants, so it's easy to spot. By the way, parking is available right in front — about 2 spots.

![Waiting chairs at Manmok's entrance](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-04-nw43s-900.webp)

We visited around 2pm, after the lunch peak had passed. There were waiting chairs to sit and wait. During busier hours, there might be a line..?

![Manmok's menu board displayed outside](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-05-124wa-900.webp)

The menu board is visible even from outside. You can see Manmok's signature eel rice bowl. Dinner menu items go up to special eel hot pot, hanwoo hot pot, and grilled eel. Lunch is great for a hearty rice bowl meal, and dinner looked good for a work dinner with a drink too.

## The interior and seating

The exterior already looked good, but stepping inside, the atmosphere gets even more upscale.

![Manmok's interior decorated with wood tones and marble](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-07-3x2w9-900.webp)

Classic high-end eel restaurant interior. Deep brown wood tones, black marble, and even a pine tree — really nice.

![Solo-dining counter seats at Manmok](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-08-1tsxt-900.webp)

There are also counter tables set up for solo diners. Looks like a great solo-dining treat for office workers near Seonleung, haha. Sometimes you just need a lunch special just for yourself, right?

![Large solid wood table for group seating](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-09-32ze2-900.webp)

In the middle of the restaurant, there's also a big solid wood table that looks like it could seat a group of 10 or more. The stone base under the table was especially eye-catching!

There's also a comfortable, cozy space to eat in. Looks most suited for 3–4 people.

## The menu board and lunch options

*Manmok's menu board*

Every table has a menu ready. For lunch, there's a dedicated menu with only the eel rice bowl. Next to the menu is a container of sansho pepper powder — you're supposed to sprinkle it on the eel to taste, but it was oddly flavorless, almost like 'radish' flavor, haha.

![Eel rice bowl options: half, whole, whole-and-a-half](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-11-1ke7y-900.webp)

The eel rice bowl comes in half, whole, or whole-and-a-half portions. You basically have to eat a whole one per person, right? Haha.

![Drink menu listing Yebisu draft beer and highballs](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-12-19mcn-900.webp)

They have Yebisu draft beer, highballs, soju, and beer. I wanted a draft beer with my eel rice bowl, like on a trip to Japan, but I held back, haha.

## What we ordered: whole-eel rice bowl ₩39,000 x 2

![Covered dishes of Manmok's eel rice bowl set](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-13-1p4in-900.webp)

They say the eel is steamed and then grilled twice more over charcoal. After ordering, we waited a bit and the full eel rice bowl set arrived. It looked similar to what I'd eaten on a trip to Japan.

![Whole-eel rice bowl with chawanmushi and soup set](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-14-1i23j-900.webp)
*Whole-eel rice bowl*

We opened each lid one by one. A hearty-looking whole-eel rice bowl. Japanese-style steamed egg custard, chawanmushi, with shrimp inside. Warm soup with matsutake mushroom. Salad, side dishes, and wasabi as accompaniments.

![Eel rice bowl with wasabi and ginger on the side](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-15-1212x-900.webp)

Apparently you're meant to add wasabi, ginger, and dried sansho pepper to the eel to your taste. Really simple, right? Haha.

![Close-up of plump charcoal-grilled eel](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-16-d78vq-900.webp)

Perfectly cooked, plump eel. Grilled over charcoal, the outside has a slight, lingering texture.

![A spoonful of eel and rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-17-1bdqu-900.webp)

First, I tried it plain, scooping up rice and eel together with a spoon, nothing added. Yum. The special sauce brushed lightly onto the surface of the eel isn't overly sweet and is really delicious. Good!

![Pickled radish, wasabi, ginger, and pickled sansho side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-18-mqon5-900.webp)
*Eel accompaniments*

### How to eat the side accompaniments

From top: pickled radish, wasabi, ginger, pickled sansho. Honestly, I couldn't really taste the pickled sansho. It's supposed to have a sharp bite, but it kind of got lost under the eel sauce, haha.

![A piece of eel topped with wasabi and ginger](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-19-1fj2p-900.webp)

Eating the eel with wasabi, ginger, and pickled radish on top is truly the ultimate combination. (Pile on plenty of wasabi — the sharp kick pairs even better.) Apparently Manmok sticks to the Kanto-style eel cooking method: grill, steam, brush with sauce, and grill again over charcoal! Maybe that's why the flesh is so, so soft.

![Seasoned rice topped with seaweed flakes](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-20-1yf3x-900.webp)

Even the rice underneath the eel feels seasoned. Maybe because of the seaweed flakes? It's just the right amount of savory-salty, so it's tasty even on its own~

![Baek kimchi, pickled radish salad, and sesame dressing salad](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-21-ns4nv-868.webp)
*Baek kimchi, pickled radish salad, and sesame salad*

The sesame dressing salad was nutty and delicious too. Then there's Korean-style pickled radish salad and baek kimchi (white kimchi)! The pickled radish salad especially was the kicker — a side that keeps you from ever getting sick of the eel rice bowl, all the way through.

![Warm soup with matsutake mushroom](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-22-vknwb-900.webp)
*Matsutake mushroom soup*

A rich soup with matsutake mushroom. One sip and, oh, you immediately taste the depth. Great to sip on in between bites of the eel rice bowl.

![Japanese-style chawanmushi with shrimp inside](https://img.superchart.com/images/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl/seolleung-manmok-saturday-lunch-eel-bowl-23-1e2wy-900.webp)
*Chawanmushi*

Soft Japanese-style chawanmushi. Inside are plump, satisfying shrimp! The moist, pudding-like texture was really delicious.

## Final thoughts

*Dessert ice cream (black tea, matcha)*

At Manmok, the eel rice bowl spot near Seonleung Station, even the dessert — black tea and matcha ice cream — was perfect! A recommended spot for a clean lunch in an upscale setting~ Truly high-quality, delicious eel rice bowl.
