## In short

Galgol Yeontanjip Seocho Gyodae Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Gyodae Station in Seocho, Seoul, grilling pork over charcoal briquettes. After a Seoul National University of Education event, two friends had pork belly, gochujang bulgogi, flat bibim noodles, and complimentary sundubu-jjigae at lunch. Verdict: a satisfying charcoal-grilled meat spot worth returning to for soju at dinner.

## A charcoal-grilled meat restaurant near Gyodae Station after a Seoul National University of Education event

After finishing a Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education-related event at Seoul National University of Education, it was lunchtime. My close friend and I looked around Gyodae Station thinking we should have some properly delicious meat, and settled on Gamgol Yeontanjip Seocho Gyodae Branch (감골연탄집 서초교대점), with its retro feel in full force. We came for lunch, but to give away the conclusion first, it is somewhere I want to revisit in the evening for charcoal-grilled meat and a proper glass of soju.

## Galgol Yeontanjip Seocho Gyodae Branch: location and hours

It is on the first floor at 24 Seocho-daero 51-gil, Seocho-gu, Seoul. Weekday hours are 11:00–22:30, while Saturday and Sunday hours are 10:00–22:00; break time is 14:00–16:30. It is about 254 m from Exit 6 of Gyodae Station on Lines 2 and 3, so it is convenient to reach by public transit.

## A retro exterior and a relaxed interior

Walking through the alleys near Gyodae Station, Gamgol Yeontanjip catches your eye. It has a warm, familiar atmosphere quite unlike the flashy, polished Korean BBQ places that are trendy these days. With “Yeontanjip,” or charcoal-briquette house, right in the name, there was no way Yoonjung—who loves meat and drinks—could simply walk past it.

Inside, the mood is comfortable and unpretentious. It looked like a great place to grill meat and share a drink with friends or coworkers, so it should also suit anyone looking for an evening drinking spot around Gyodae. There were diners having meals at lunchtime, but in Yoonjung’s mind, the thought had already settled in: “I have to come here for evening drinks next time.”

## What the two of us ordered

For two adults, we tried a well-rounded spread: one serving of the strongly recommended gochujang charcoal bulgogi, two servings of charcoal king salt samgyeopsal (pork belly), one serving of flat bibim noodles, and rice. For a Gyodae meat restaurant where charcoal-scented meat is the star, the lineup was exactly Yoonjung’s usual taste.

## The charcoal briquettes arrive after the side dishes

After we ordered and the banchan (Korean side dishes) were set out, the fiercely glowing charcoal briquettes arrived. The distinct atmosphere of charcoal briquettes, so different from wood charcoal or gas, had me salivating before the meat even hit the grill.

## How was the charcoal king salt pork belly?

Just looking at it makes your mouth water.

Once the thick king salt pork belly went onto the grill, it started cooking appetizingly, its juicy surface sizzling away with a “sizzle~.”

The meat crackled as it cooked on the grill, and its savory fragrance tickled my nose. Watching meat cook in front of the fire is one of the essential pleasures of a meat restaurant, too.

A golden-brown piece of pork belly was savory on the outside, moist within, and still full of juice. The subtle smoky aroma made it a pork belly dish worth recommending. It is good with the side dishes according to your taste, but I also recommend trying the first bite or two plain to enjoy the pork belly’s own savory flavor.

## The gochujang charcoal bulgogi won me over even more

What captured Yoonjung’s taste buds even more strongly was the gochujang charcoal bulgogi. For evening drinks next time, it is absolutely go-go-go!

![Gochujang charcoal bulgogi](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodae-charcoal-pork-gamgol/gyodae-charcoal-pork-gamgol-17-1rsqj-966.webp)

When meat coated in that appetizing seasoning is grilled over charcoal briquettes, the marinade lightly caramelizes, bringing spicy-sweet flavor and smokiness together. It is delicious on its own, and with rice, it would be the ultimate rice thief.

Especially at dinner, it would be just right with a glass of soju or a cold beer. The whole time I ate, I could not stop thinking, “If only it were evening today, I’d be having a drink…”

![Complimentary lunch sundubu-jjigae](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodae-charcoal-pork-gamgol/gyodae-charcoal-pork-gamgol-22-bgw1z-966.webp)

## Complimentary lunch sundubu-jjigae and flat bibim noodles

At lunch, a hot sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) came out as a complimentary service, too. The bubbling stew was great to spoon up between bites of meat and was a perfect match for rice. Its spicy, piping-hot broth cleared away the richness that can come from eating only meat, making lunch even more filling.

![Spicy and tangy flat bibim noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodae-charcoal-pork-gamgol/gyodae-charcoal-pork-gamgol-23-ko7ug-966.webp)

A meat restaurant would feel incomplete without bibim noodles, right? They say these are the only bibim myeon in the world^^

The spicy-tangy flat bibim noodles had a texture that was fun and different from ordinary bibim noodles. They were good alone, but putting a piece of well-cooked pork belly right on top and eating them together brought the meat’s savory flavor together with the noodles’ tangy heat in one bite. Exactly the combination Yoonjung loves.

## Next time, evening drinks

Galgol Yeontanjip Seocho Gyodae Branch was a chance find after the event at Seoul National University of Education. The king salt pork belly, browned over charcoal briquettes, was savory and juicy, while the gochujang charcoal bulgogi was especially appealing for its spicy-sweet marinade and smoky flavor. With flat bibim noodles and complimentary lunch sundubu-jjigae alongside it, the two of us had a very satisfying, filling meal.

This time it was lunch, so I held back on the drinks, but next time I am definitely heading there in the evening. Grilling gochujang bulgogi and king salt pork belly over sizzling charcoal briquettes with a refreshing somaek—a soju-and-beer mix! Or ssomaek would be good too^^ Just thinking about it is making me hungry already^^
