## When you’re craving tteokbokki in Yongsan

A visit to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점)! Wow... it had been so long since I found a properly great-value local gem.

After a bread crawl around Yongsan, you somehow start craving something spicy and punchy, right? Nothing fits the bill quite like tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes). Chewy rice cakes in a sweet, spicy sauce, plus fritters on the side—it feels like more than a meal; it washes the stress right down too, haha. This time, I visited Hyeonseonine, famous in Yongsan for its tteokbokki!

This isn’t some tteokbokki spot that suddenly appeared out of nowhere—it has been around for a long time, dating back to its pocha (street-tent bar) days, so I was even more excited. A beloved spot for years, it has now expanded into a chain so more people can enjoy the flavor. As a tteokbokki lover, how could I not be curious?

And the most famous thing people say about Hyeonseonine is...

> It’s spicier than Yupdduk.

Wait a second.

## Choosing mild as someone weak with spice

I’m someone who really can’t handle spicy food, haha. For people who love spice, that may sound like an invitation to a challenge, but for me it was practically a warning label, so I stood in front of the menu debating for quite a while. In the end, out of mild, regular, and spicy, I of course chose mild!

![Choosing mild tteokbokki at Hyeonseonine](https://img.superchart.com/images/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne-08-ddqyq-900.webp)

But was mild completely free of heat? Not quite. To me, it was about as spicy as regular instant ramen. It was just right. Even people who are weak with spice can eat it comfortably, while still getting that unmistakable tteokbokki kick! For me, this was actually the most delicious level of spice.

And aren’t side dishes quietly important when you eat tteokbokki? Tteokbokki alone feels incomplete, fritters alone leave you wanting something more, and before you know it you’re ordering all sorts of things—that’s the world of tteokbokki, haha.

## A meal with everything from sundae to fritters

First up, sundae!

![Warm sundae and offal at Hyeonseonine](https://img.superchart.com/images/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne-11-15oe1-900.webp)

At Korean snack shops, sundae (Korean blood sausage) and offal are often prepared ahead of time, so they can sometimes be cold or dry. Here, though, both the sundae and offal were piping hot, which I loved. Especially when you dip warm sundae lightly into the tteokbokki sauce... honestly, that combination is cheating.

![Sundae served with tteokbokki sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne-12-1m57i-900.webp)

The gimbap (seaweed rice roll) was better than expected too! It was moist and soft, making it perfect with the tteokbokki sauce. The real meal begins the moment you dip gimbap into that sauce, haha.

And then, what I consider the foundation and very soul of a tteokbokki place: fritters!

![Fritters served alongside Hyeonseonine tteokbokki](https://img.superchart.com/images/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne-14-tq442-900.webp)

![Fried seaweed rolls, squid, and other fritters](https://img.superchart.com/images/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne-15-y2uq0-900.webp)

We tried a good range: seaweed rolls, squid, dumplings, sweet potato, and vegetable fritters. Every single one was tasty without a hint of sogginess. Seaweed rolls, especially, are an absolute must at a tteokbokki place, aren’t they? Dip crisp fritters generously into the tteokbokki sauce, and you get crunch and sweet heat at once... this is why I can’t quit tteokbokki. The squid fritters were generously filled, the dumplings were a perfect match for the sauce as always, and it was fun choosing bites of sweet potato and vegetable fritters too.

Another item I really liked was the fish cakes!

![Fish cakes and mini mul-tteok at Hyeonseonine](https://img.superchart.com/images/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne/yongsan-tteokbokki-mild-sundae-hyeonseonne-16-1roq0-900.webp)

There were a generous three fish cakes, plus mini mul-tteok (rice cakes served in broth), so it was a very satisfying combination for anyone who wants to try a little of everything. Taking a sip of warm fish-cake broth in between bites of tteokbokki is just so good.

## What two people ate, and how satisfied we were

In the end, it was tteokbokki + sundae + offal + gimbap + fritters + fish cakes + mul-tteok... At first we wondered, “Can we really finish all this?” Well. We did. And we felt like our stomachs were about to burst, haha. It was genuinely a hearty, filling amount for two people. Considering the price too, it was such great value that I wondered how a spread like this is even possible with today’s prices.

These days, even ordering just one dish when eating out can get expensive, but after picking all these sides with tteokbokki and eating our fill as two people, we were extremely satisfied. Best of all, this wasn’t merely a great-value place with huge portions—every item tasted better than the basics. It made me think, ah, there’s a reason it has been loved since its street-stall days.

If, like me, you can’t handle much spice, I’d recommend starting with mild. Even mild has the level of kick you get from regular instant ramen, so it is plenty fun to eat as tteokbokki. On the other hand, if you love spice, regular or spicy could be worth a try.

The conclusion? Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch: very satisfying! I think I’ll remember it when I want a little post-bread-crawl hangover cure (?), when a sudden tteokbokki craving hits like crazy, and even when I just want Korean snack food for no particular reason. If you’re the type to order tteokbokki and have sundae, fritters, gimbap, and fish cakes alongside it, you’ll probably be very happy here! If you’re looking for a hearty, easy-on-the-wallet local gem in Yongsan, it is worth visiting at least once. I’m already 100% willing to return!

Next time... I’ll briefly consider trying regular. But I’m weak with spicy food, after all. For now, I’ll protect my happiness safely with mild, haha. Tteokbokki is best when it is only as spicy as you can enjoy! Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is somewhere I want to revisit whenever I crave tteokbokki in Yongsan. It was a proper Korean snack meal that satisfied across the board: flavor, portion, variety, and value.
