I was looking for somewhere to grab a drink in Bangi-dong in the evening and ended up at Horanggul Bangi Branch. It's a spot with an izakaya vibe where you can enjoy gopchang (beef tripe) hot pot, and I tried the hot pot for two plus the egg risotto.

The combo of a spicy, rich broth simmered with tripe, tofu and vegetables, finishing with the leftover broth turned into a soft risotto, was really good. There were also a few things worth knowing before you go — about portion size, meat add-ons, and broth refills — so here's my review of this Bangi-dong dining alley bar.

## What kind of place is Horanggul Bangi Branch in the Bangi-dong dining alley?

The Bangi-dong dining alley has tons of options, from grilled meat restaurants to pojangmacha (street tents) to izakayas. Horanggul Bangi Branch felt less like a typical hot pot specialty restaurant and more like an izakaya where you enjoy hot pot as a drinking snack.

We ordered the gopchang hot pot for two.

When it first arrived, the pot was smaller than I expected. As I was eating, I wanted a bit more meat and tried to add some, but I was told that at the time of my visit, meat add-ons weren't possible once the food had already come out!!

So if you tend to eat a generous amount of meat or tripe, I'd recommend checking whether add-ons are possible when you place your first order.

## The gopchang broth gets richer the longer it simmers

Once the hot pot starts bubbling, the red broth gets deeper and deeper.

Tasting the broth first, it was spicy with quite a strong savory depth. Alongside the fiery broth, there was a nutty flavor coming from the tripe, plus a subtle sweetness from the cooked vegetables.

After letting the tofu and vegetables cook enough, I fished out the tripe piece by piece — it was chewy with a nutty, fatty richness spreading from inside.

The spicy broth in particular balanced out the richness of the tripe, which made it seem like a great drinking snack.

The tofu was also delicious once it had soaked up enough broth, the spicy flavor seeping into its soft texture.

## Planning on the risotto? Save some broth

Here's another important tip. I was told broth refills weren't available during my visit.

If you're planning to finish with the egg risotto, it's best not to drink too much of the gopchang hot pot broth and to save some. I kept wanting to keep sipping the spicy broth, but I deliberately left some aside with the risotto in mind.

Especially if you love hot pot broth, you might absent-mindedly keep eating it — so if you plan to order the risotto, save some broth! That's a pretty useful tip to know before you go.

## Finishing with an egg risotto made with two eggs

After finishing most of the hot pot, I wrapped up with the egg risotto. I felt the portion might be a bit small, so I ordered it with two eggs, and it came topped with egg yolk as well.

Once you pop the yolk and mix it into the rice, the texture completely changes. The spicy, rich gopchang hot pot broth has soaked into the rice, so it's basically spicy at the base, but once the egg mixes in, it becomes much softer and nuttier.

There were also finely chopped vegetables mixed in, which kept the texture from feeling monotonous. To me, it felt like a natural progression — the savory depth of the spicy broth, then the softness of the yolk, then the nuttiness of the egg, then the subtle sweetness of the vegetables.

Personally, I liked the gopchang hot pot, but the final egg risotto was really quite delicious. Even though I was already fairly full from the hot pot, I kept reaching for another spoonful.

Having eaten here myself, I'd say Horanggul Bangi Branch works better as an izakaya spot for enjoying gopchang hot pot alongside drinks, rather than as a filling, meal-focused hot pot restaurant!!

If you're looking for a place in Bangi-dong to enjoy gopchang hot pot with a drink, Horanggul Bangi Branch is worth remembering. The gopchang hot pot combo — spicy, savory broth with chewy, nutty tripe, plus soft tofu and vegetables — was great.

Above all, the final egg risotto was what stuck with me the most. The rice, soaked in the spicy hot pot broth, turned soft and nutty once mixed with the egg and yolk, giving a completely different finish from the hot pot itself.

It's worth knowing beforehand that meat add-ons and broth refills were hard to get once the food arrived. If you're looking for an izakaya-style bar in the Bangi-dong dining alley, or want a hot, spicy gopchang hot pot followed by risotto, I'd recommend it.
