## In short

Hamaru Hoegi is a late-night izakaya in Dongdaemun, Seoul, on the road from Hoegi Station up to Kyung Hee University. Over dinner with a friend, Nagasaki champon (Nagasaki-style seafood noodle soup), heart, asparagus-wrapped pork belly, scallion-wrapped pork belly and ginkgo nut skewers, cucumber tataki and a Suntory Kakubin highball made for a satisfying night, with the binchotan charcoal aroma of the yakitori and the huge bowl of champon standing out most. If you want food and drinks in one spot in Hoegi, Hamaru Hoegi is the answer.

I was looking for an izakaya open late near Kyung Hee University to grab dinner and drinks with a friend, and found this place — the menu ranges from yakitori to teppanyaki to nabe (hot pot), so it's perfect for eating and drinking at the same time 😙 We ordered Nagasaki champon, yakitori, cucumber tataki, and a Suntory Kakubin highball!

## Hamaru Hoegi: location, hours, parking

- 📍 Address: 11 Gyeonghuidae-ro 1-gil, 1st floor, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul
- ⏰ Hours: Sun–Thu 17:00–2:00 / Fri–Sat 17:00–3:00
- 🚗 Parking: On-site parking is available, but the space is very tight, so calling ahead is recommended!
- 📋 Reservations: Available, groups welcome

Since it's open late, it's also a pretty useful spot for a second or third round in Hoegi.

### How to get there

![Hamaru Hoegi's Japanese-lettered sign on Gyeonghuidae-ro 1-gil](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-02-3bpxi-900.webp)

Hamaru Hoegi is on the road heading up from Hoegi Station toward Kyung Hee University. The area near the university is packed with restaurants and bars, but the Japanese-lettered sign made it easy to spot 🙋🏻‍♀️ The entrance has a wood-tone look that feels like an actual Japanese local bar, and there's outdoor-style seating too — especially nice when the weather is cool.

## Interior and seating

![Tables and bar seating inside Hamaru Hoegi](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-03-1791z-m-900.webp)

Once inside, the space was bigger than I expected. There are regular tables, a bar facing the kitchen, and more relaxed outdoor-style seats too!

![Izakaya interior decorated with Japanese posters and liquor bottles](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-04-j24hw-900.webp)

With Japanese posters and liquor bottles scattered around, it leaned more toward a lively, comfortable vibe rather than a super polished izakaya ✨

![Bar seating facing the kitchen for solo drinkers](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-05-18lhr-900.webp)

There's bar seating too, so it'd be fine for a solo drink in Hoegi! It felt more suited to drinks with friends or a casual date than a quiet blind date spot.

## A menu spanning yakitori, teppanyaki, and nabe

![Hamaru Hoegi's yakitori menu board](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-06-10or9-1280.webp)

The menu was seriously varied. There are about 20 kinds of yakitori, plus teppanyaki dishes like okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and steak, along with motsunabe and odengtang (fish cake soup) — quite a range.

### What we ordered

We wanted to try a bit of everything without going too heavy, so we ordered this:

- 🍲 Nagasaki champon ₩20,000
- 🍢 Heart skewer ₩3,000
- 🍢 Asparagus pork belly skewer ₩3,500
- 🍢 Scallion pork belly skewer
- 🍢 Ginkgo nut skewer (2pc) ₩4,000
- 🥒 Cucumber tataki ₩8,000
- 🥃 Suntory Kakubin highball

Hamaru's yakitori is prepared and sold fresh the same day, and popular skewers can sell out if you go late, so if you want to try a lot of them, it's best not to visit too late!

![A glass of Suntory Kakubin highball](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-09-fkc7b-900.webp)

For drinks, we went with the Suntory Kakubin highball.

![A plate of cucumber tataki topped with shio kombu](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-10-xlk99-900.webp)

### Cucumber tataki

First up, the cucumber tataki, easy to pick at right away. The cucumber was crisp, and overall it had that salty, slightly tangy Japanese-style cucumber salad feel.

It's topped with shio kombu, which really kicks up the umami! A great snack to have between bites of the greasier yakitori.

![Yakitori skewers grilled over binchotan charcoal](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-11-eoj2t-900.webp)

## Four kinds of binchotan-grilled yakitori

Next, the skewers started coming out one by one. Since Hamaru's yakitori is grilled over binchotan charcoal, the smoky aroma hit as soon as each one landed on the table.

![Charcoal-grilled heart skewer](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-12-xoyj7-900.webp)

### Heart

The heart skewer's highlight is its firm, chewy texture! Not tough at all, and the more you chew, the more savory it gets — probably the most classic drinking snack of the skewers. I always order heart at yakitori spots, and this one was solidly good too.

![Asparagus pork belly yakitori skewer](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-13-14w2u-900.webp)

### Asparagus pork belly

Then the asparagus pork belly. The asparagus keeps its crisp texture, while the pork belly wrapped around it releases just enough moist fat — a great combo. Asparagus alone can be plain, and pork belly alone can be a bit greasy, but together they balance out perfectly~ I'd order this again for sure.

![Grilled scallion pork belly skewer](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-14-yx4ek-900.webp)

### Scallion pork belly

With the scallion pork belly, the grilled scallion loses its sharpness and turns sweet, and with the pork belly fat soaking in, you get a sweet-savory combo that really works. Add the charcoal aroma, and it paired perfectly with the highball.

![Golden grilled ginkgo nut skewer](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-15-weo9n-900.webp)

### Ginkgo nut skewer

Last, the ginkgo nut skewer. Grilled golden, slightly chewy outside and nutty inside.

![Close-up of an easy-to-eat ginkgo nut skewer](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-16-2a3d3-m-900.webp)

Good to pop between other skewers, with that distinct mild, slightly bitter flavor that has its own appeal as a drinking snack! If you're ordering several kinds of yakitori, I'd recommend mixing in a ginkgo skewer.

## Nagasaki champon — the portion is huge

And then, the Nagasaki champon we'd been waiting for. The moment it arrived, I thought, 'Can two of us actually finish this?' haha

![A large bowl of Nagasaki champon](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-18-1vn31-900.webp)

First off, the bowl is massive. It's so wide and deep that photos don't really capture the scale — full marks on portion size alone!

![Full view of the wide, deep bowl of Nagasaki champon](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-19-1t24n-900.webp)

Noodles are already included, so you don't need to order extra to make it a full meal. The broth is the milky Nagasaki style, with both the refreshing taste from seafood and a rich, savory depth.

![Milky Nagasaki champon broth with noodles included](https://img.superchart.com/images/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong/hamaru-hoegi-izakaya-nagasaki-jjamppong-20-1xo05-900.webp)

The first sip is mild and clean, but as you keep eating, a subtle spiciness builds up, which is perfect while drinking. And since the noodles are already in there, you can fish some out between skewers to keep yourself full. The portion is so large that if you order a couple of other dishes alongside it with two people, you'll be completely stuffed. If I had to pick one soup dish at an izakaya in Hoegi, it'd be the Nagasaki champon, hands down!!

🚻 The restroom is outside the restaurant, and you need to enter a code to use it.

## Who should visit?

What I liked most about Hamaru Hoegi is being able to eat everything from yakitori to teppanyaki to nabe in one place. Prices are approachable too, with skewers starting around ₩3,000, so it's easy to add just what you want.

- Anyone looking for a bar near Hoegi Station open late
- Anyone hunting for good yakitori near Kyung Hee University
- Anyone wanting a casual highball on a date
- Groups of friends wanting to order lots of snacks and talk for hours
- Anyone wanting a solo drink at the bar seats

Next time I want to try the yakitori omakase and their handmade okonomiyaki too~ If you're deciding on an izakaya in Hoegi, Hamaru Hoegi is worth a visit! Just make sure to save room before ordering the Nagasaki champon haha, the portion is seriously huge 🙌🏻
