## In short

Sinbok Myeongwan is a basement Chinese restaurant on Teheran-ro 4-gil near Gangnam Station in Seoul. Two friends ordered beef fried rice, mala beef noodles with knife-cut noodles and xiaolongbao from the table tablet and shared them, and each dish had its own clear character: smoky wok flavour in the fried rice, chewy noodles in the soup, a burst of juice in the dumplings. With three semi-private rooms, Sinbok Myeongwan suits a small group ordering several dishes to split.

## Where is Sinbok Myeongwan near Gangnam Station?

Sinbok Myeongwan is a Chinese restaurant near Gangnam Station, at 6 Teheran-ro 4-gil, B126, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea. I had plans to eat with a friend near Gangnam Station and was looking around for somewhere to go when I ended up visiting Sinbok Myeongwan! There are so many restaurants around Gangnam Station that it actually gets harder to choose. I was looking for somewhere with a local Chinese feel where we could relax and chat!

## Inside Sinbok Myeongwan: retro brick tile walls

Even before stepping inside, the warm orange brick tile at Sinbok Myeongwan caught my eye. Combined with the mood-setting curtains and wood-tone furniture, it had a slightly different vibe from the sleek Chinese restaurants you commonly see these days. From the window seats you could see an escalator and people passing by, which was fun to watch while eating, haha.

Overall it was retro yet cozy, easy to chat comfortably with a friend, and I liked that the casual atmosphere didn't feel too formal.

## Sinbok Myeongwan's menu and tablet ordering

Looking at the menu, there was a wide range, from sweet and sour pork to cream shrimp, beef fried rice, fish-fragrant eggplant rice bowl, gongbao chicken rice bowl, and shrimp fried rice. We ordered beef fried rice, beef noodles, and xiaolongbao! It was also convenient that each table had its own ordering tablet. We could look through the menu at our own pace and order right away without calling a staff member over.

The basic side dishes were also neatly prepared, nice for a quick nibble before the mains arrived.

## Beef fried rice with real smoky wok flavour

![Sinbok Myeongwan's beef fried rice topped with large chunks of beef](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-08-1y2k5-900.webp)

The first dish we tried that day was the beef fried rice topped with thickly cut beef. It looked meaty in photos too, which made me curious, and in person the chunks of beef on top of the rice really stood out at first glance.

![Large pieces of beef on top of the rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-10-1f37l-900.webp)

![A spoonful of beef fried rice lifted up](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-11-ij319-900.webp)

On the first bite, the savory fried rice had a salty umami depth, plus a subtle smoky wok flavor that made it richer than I expected. Eating it together with the beef gave it a heartier texture than rice alone, and there was something fun about biting into the big chunks of meat here and there — a really satisfying dish.

![Beef fried rice served in a shareable style](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-12-91doy-900.webp)

If you like fried rice among Chinese dishes, or need a rice dish while ordering several things to share, this would suit well.

## Mala beef noodle soup with chewy knife-cut noodles

![Sinbok Myeongwan's red-broth beef noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-13-1wkkh-900.webp)

Next we ordered the beef noodles. The deep red broth caught my eye first, and inside it were thin, wide knife-cut noodles (dao xiao mian), giving it a look quite different from typical noodle dishes.

![Wide knife-cut noodles lifted with chopsticks](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-14-1bdp8-900.webp)

![Close-up of the beef noodle broth and knife-cut noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-15-wm7uj-900.webp)

The noodles were wide and chewy, and a sharp aroma rose from the broth. It had the distinctive fragrance of mala spice along with the rich flavor of ox bone stock, making the soup itself feel quite deep.

![Beef noodle broth with mala aroma rising](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-16-1f6qw-900.webp)

I sometimes get tired of mala flavors after a few spoonfuls if they're too strong, but eating the noodles together with the broth kept the spicy, savory flavor going, so I kept reaching for more. I especially liked how the wide knife-cut noodles held onto the broth well, so every bite carried the soup's flavor with it.

## Xiaolongbao packed with juice

![Xiaolongbao served in a bamboo steamer](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-17-fogyn-900.webp)

The dish I'd personally been looking forward to was the xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), served in a bamboo steamer. They looked cute even before eating, and seeing the steam rising warmly from the steamer made me want to dig in right away.

![Xiaolongbao steaming inside the steamer](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-18-1c3yc-900.webp)

The xiaolongbao wrapper was moist and soft. I lifted one gently with chopsticks and carefully tore the wrapper open, and warm juice came pouring out. That moment when the savory, rich broth spread in my mouth was memorable, and eating it with the thin wrapper gave a nicely moist texture too.

![Xiaolongbao with wrapper torn open showing the juice inside](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-19-13cim-900.webp)

Since the juice inside is hot, it's better to let it cool slightly rather than popping it straight in your mouth. Xiaolongbao is also fun to look at, so it suited ordering together with a friend to share.

## Want a local-style Chinese meal in Gangnam?

![Table set with beef fried rice, beef noodles, and xiaolongbao together](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share/gangnam-shinbok-myeonkwan-beef-fried-rice-share-20-i2bft-1200.webp)

I heard that Sinbok Myeongwan's dishes are cooked directly by an experienced local chef. In particular, they say the Cantonese-style dim sum is made in-house from the filling to the wrapper, which made me pay a little more attention to that while eating the xiaolongbao. Each dish I had that day had a distinct character. The beef fried rice was savory with a nice smoky flavor, the beef noodles stood out for their rich broth and knife-cut noodles, and the xiaolongbao's warm juice and moist wrapper were what stuck with me.

### How are the semi-private rooms for small groups?

Sinbok Myeongwan has three semi-private rooms available, and they're set up to seat four, with up to five possible depending on the situation, as noted at the restaurant. Rather than ordering just one dish, it seemed better suited to visiting with a group and ordering several things to share. It would also work well as a spot for small gatherings.
