## In short

Baengni Gomtang is a hanwoo beef gomtang (clear beef bone soup) restaurant about 223m from Exit 7 of Hongik University Station in Mapo, Seoul. This visit ordered three dishes at once — hanwoo gomtang, snow-topped hanwoo gochujang yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl), and tteokgalbi (grilled minced beef patty) — to taste the clear broth, the spicy rice bowl and the rich meat together. In Hongdae, where most menus lean heavy and spicy, Baengni Gomtang's clear gomtang style is the easy-on-the-stomach meal to look for.

Today I visited Baengni Gomtang, a great pick in Hongdae when you want something clean but filling. When people think of Hongdae, pasta places, meat spots, or bars usually come to mind first — but sometimes you just want a warm bowl of soup and rice instead of something spicy or heavy. That's when this Hongdae gomtang restaurant comes in handy. They have a wide range of Korean dishes made with hanwoo (Korean beef), from gomtang to yukhoe bibimbap, yukhoe, and tteokgalbi, so it also seemed like a solid choice for anyone looking for good Korean food in Hongdae 😊

## Where is Baengni Gomtang, and what is the dining room like?

Baengni Gomtang is about 223m from Exit 7 of Hongik University Station, so it's easy to reach by public transport. It's just off the main Hongdae commercial strip, but close enough that you can still grab a hearty Korean meal without straying far — pretty convenient for anyone searching for a good meal near Hongik University Station.

Inside, the interior is centered around wood tones, giving the whole space a warm, comfortable feel. The tables weren't cramped, and the layout worked well for groups of 2 to 4. Each table has its own ordering tablet, so you can browse the menu at your own pace and order without flagging down staff. It felt easy enough to visit alone or for a casual lunch, and overall it had a cleaner, more modern feel than your typical old-school gomtang restaurant.

## The three dishes ordered at Baengni Gomtang

This is what I ordered that day:

- Beef gomtang
- Snow-topped hanwoo gochujang yukhoe bibimbap
- Tteokgalbi

That's how I ate 😋 Ordering the restaurant's signature beef gomtang alongside the yukhoe bibimbap and tteokgalbi made for a pretty generous spread. The yukhoe bibimbap in particular is described as fresh hanwoo yukhoe (raw beef) topped with a sweet-spicy gochujang sauce and a finely piled, snow-like plant-based butter on top. The gomtang was a light broth dish, the yukhoe bibimbap was a spicy, savory rice dish, and the tteokgalbi was a rich meat dish — none of the flavors overlapped, so ordering them together worked really well.

## How does the snow-topped hanwoo gochujang yukhoe bibimbap taste?

The snow-topped hanwoo gochujang yukhoe bibimbap caught my eye visually right away. Fresh hanwoo yukhoe was piled generously in the center, surrounded by a full spread of vegetables and garnishes. The finely piled, snow-like topping on top made it look far more striking than a typical yukhoe bibimbap.

The gochujang sauce was spicy with a slight sweetness that paired well with the mild flavor of the yukhoe. Once mixed together, you could feel both the soft texture of the yukhoe and the crunch of the vegetables, so the texture was great too. On top of that, there was a nutty richness that made it feel creamy and smooth rather than just spicy. Alternating with the clear, light broth of the beef gomtang balanced out the spiciness nicely. If you feel like gomtang alone isn't quite enough, ordering the yukhoe bibimbap to share is a good move. If you're looking for good Korean food in Hongdae and want variety beyond just gomtang, this is a dish I'd recommend.

### What side dishes come with the meal?

After ordering, the basic side dishes came out first. As you'd expect from a gomtang restaurant, kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi) to go with the broth is a must 😊 It had a crunchy texture and a tangy, spicy flavor that paired well with the light gomtang. Alongside that came a spicy seasoned side dish and a soft potato salad. Rather than piling on too many side dishes, they kept it simple with just a few that complemented the main dishes. The bold seasoned side dish and kkakdugi in particular were a nice way to refresh your palate between spoonfuls of the mild gomtang.

## Hanwoo gomtang: the clear-broth style

Finally, the beef gomtang at Baengni Gomtang arrived 🍲 A large brass bowl held plenty of clear broth and hanwoo beef. At first glance the broth looks quite plain, but the first spoonful revealed a subtle savory depth from the meat, not just a bland soup. Rather than the milky, heavy style of a bone-marrow style gomtang, this was closer to a clean, light beef gomtang.

Rice was already in the bowl along with the soup, so there was no need to add it separately — I could just start eating right away. There was also more meat than I expected, thinly sliced and boiled tender without any chewiness. Finely chopped green onions added a subtle aroma to the meat's flavor, and the sprout ginseng on top gave it a clearly distinct look. Adding a bit of kkakdugi to the broth brought together the mild and spicy flavors, and I kept going back for more spoonfuls. If you want a gentle meal in a Hongdae full of intense food, this is the dish that comes to mind.

## Is the tteokgalbi worth adding as a side?

The tteokgalbi I ordered alongside the gomtang also had quite a striking look. It came out thickly grilled with a generous drizzle of yellow sauce on top, and the nutty aroma reached me before I even took a bite. The surface had some deeply charred spots from grilling, giving a subtle smoky flavor when eaten. Despite its appearance, the inside was moist and tender, not dry at all.

Biting in, you first taste the meat's juiciness along with a sweet-salty seasoning, followed by the nuttiness of the sauce. Where the gomtang is relatively mild, the tteokgalbi has a bolder flavor, so the two worked well alternated. In particular, a spoonful of the clear gomtang broth followed by a bite of tteokgalbi balanced the seasoning perfectly. It goes well with rice too, and it's a solid side to order if you feel like the gomtang alone is missing a meat dish.

## Baengni Gomtang in Hongdae: the verdict

Baengni Gomtang gave me a proper, non-spicy Korean meal in Hongdae for once. The combination of the clear yet deep beef gomtang and the moist, grilled tteokgalbi worked better together than I expected. The restaurant is clean and close to Hongik University Station, so it seems like a good option whether you're eating solo, grabbing lunch, or craving Korean food on a date 😊 If you like gukbap (Korean soup with rice) but find heavier, greasier styles too much, try a clear-style gomtang like this one. Next time I visit, I'd like to try the snow-topped hanwoo gochujang yukhoe bibimbap again too.
