## Why do people say Onjeongban in Byeollae is selling at a loss?

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch is a shabu kalguksu place on Siksong 1-ro in Byeollae, and for ₩11,000 per person you get vegetables, meat, kalguksu noodles, and even porridge. Here's my visit record from a hearty meal in Byeollae, Namyangju.

I love shabu-shabu and go looking for it everywhere, so I visited after seeing a review that made me curious. Someone in that review said something interesting.

> Isn't the owner losing money on this? Is there even any profit left after giving all this?

At first I wondered just how good it could be to prompt a comment like that, but once I went myself, I understood exactly what they meant, haha.

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu is on the first floor, so it wasn't hard to find, and the building itself was clean, which made a good first impression.

## Inside Onjeongban: dining room and table setup

The Byeollae branch of Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu has a spacious dining room and one private room, making it good for bringing elders along. Once inside, the place was much bigger than I expected, and the tables had generous spacing! With a private room available too, it seemed like a great spot for family meals or dining with older relatives.

The restroom was toward the back of the restaurant, with one stall each for men and women, and it was clean, which I liked.

Drinks and alcohol were displayed too, so it was nice being able to see what was available at a glance.

Every table had a small plate, a soy sauce dish, scissors, paper cups, soy sauce, wet wipes, and tongs, along with an induction burner at each table.

## The 11,000-won set and our 39,000-won order for two

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu is ₩11,000 per person! But it's not just shabu-shabu on its own. Vegetables, meat, kalguksu noodles, and porridge are all included, and at the self-serve bar you can also help yourself to as much gondeure rice as you want.

You can choose between clear broth and spicy broth, and between kalguksu noodles or sujebi. Even at that point I thought the price was already pretty good, but eating it made even more sense, haha.

We ordered the shabu kalguksu for two with clear broth, plus 8 rolled dumplings for shabu and a half plate of boiled pork on top. All together, that came to ₩39,000.

Not long after ordering, the food came out fast, and the visuals were already great — the whole spread was beautifully plated. Just looking at it made me happy, haha. Along with the meat and vegetables for shabu-shabu, there were self-serve porridge ingredients, kalguksu noodles, salad and geotjeori, plus the boiled pork and rolled dumplings we added on.

## What's on the self-serve bar, including gondeure rice

At the self-serve bar, white rice and gondeure rice, seasoned soy sauce, sesame oil, perilla oil, geotjeori, salad, yuzu salad dressing, sweet chili sauce, and broth were all set up. While the shabu-shabu was cooking, I checked out the self-serve bar.

I saw a little booklet showing how to eat it the best way, and tried following it exactly.

![Booklet with instructions on how to eat the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/byeollae-shabu-kalguksu-clear-broth-two/byeollae-shabu-kalguksu-clear-broth-two-18-zcopp-966.webp)

First, I added a bit of seasoned soy sauce, sesame oil, and perilla oil to the gondeure rice, and wow... it was genuinely delicious. It tasted like something I'd come back for even if it were sold on its own, haha. Very satisfying from the very first bite.

## Clear-broth shabu-shabu and the soy sauce dip

Now onto the main event, the shabu-shabu. The vegetables come pre-arranged in the pot, and you add the meat to it.

The vegetables were really fresh, and the soy sauce dip in particular was the real highlight.

![Soy sauce dip with wasabi added](https://img.superchart.com/images/byeollae-shabu-kalguksu-clear-broth-two/byeollae-shabu-kalguksu-clear-broth-two-19-g68w6-966.webp)

It wasn't just plain soy sauce, haha, something else was definitely mixed in. Adding the wasabi that came with it and dipping the vegetables in — that's when it all came together!

### The 8 rolled dumplings we added: half kimchi, half meat

Once the vegetables had cooked down a bit, I added the rolled dumplings too.

![Half kimchi, half meat rolled dumplings added to broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/byeollae-shabu-kalguksu-clear-broth-two/byeollae-shabu-kalguksu-clear-broth-two-20-1sd2d-966.webp)

![Rolled dumpling cut in half showing the filling](https://img.superchart.com/images/byeollae-shabu-kalguksu-clear-broth-two/byeollae-shabu-kalguksu-clear-broth-two-21-11dy0-966.webp)

We ordered half kimchi and half meat, and the wrapper was thin while the filling was packed. It had a soft, crumbly texture and was so good that I asked what was inside — turns out it's meat, tofu, and vegetables, minced and hand-rolled fresh every day. No wonder it tasted different from regular dumplings. You could tell a lot of care goes into every single dish here.

### Kalguksu noodles with geotjeori, then the porridge finish

Then I added more broth myself and threw in the kalguksu noodles. The noodles had a nice chewy texture, and eating them with the geotjeori was such a perfect match. Geotjeori really is the perfect partner for kalguksu, love it.

Last but not least, we finished with porridge! I added a bit of sesame oil and dipped mine in chili sauce, and it was so good. Eating the whole course like this, I felt like I was about to burst, hahahaha.

## Free dessert corner: papaya and mango slushies

I guess I was too hungry to notice on the way in, but on the way out I saw there was a dessert setup right by the entrance. There was coffee and ppeongtwigi, but more than anything, there were slushies, haha. Papaya and mango slushies — there's no way I could skip that, haha. You just scoop it into a paper cup and take it with you, so you can grab a simple dessert right after your meal. That kind of thoughtful touch really shows the owner's sense for hospitality.

## Is Onjeongban worth it for shabu-shabu in Byeollae?

Overall the food wasn't heavy at all and the restaurant is spacious, so next time I want to bring my parents and try the dumpling hot pot too :) If you usually love shabu-shabu, this place in Byeollae, Namyangju is worth a visit at least once :) Recommending this as a great value spot in Byeollae!
