### Entrance and exterior

Walking up from Exit 1 of Sagajeong Station toward Myeonmok Station, you'll spot it right on the main road on the ground floor.

It's right in front of the Myeondong Elementary School bus stop, so coming by bus works well too. As you pass by, the faint smell of charcoal smoke naturally draws your eye.

Even though it was still early on a weekday evening, people kept coming in for a meal. It seemed like a popular lunch spot for people around Myeonmok-dong.

## What's the vibe inside?

Stepping inside, the interior had a clean, traditional Korean wooden-porch feel.

![Widely spaced tables inside the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-03-4fwuj-966.webp)

The tables were spaced far apart, so I didn't have to worry about the neighboring table while eating. The smoke ventilation system was well set up too, and the air conditioning kept things cool and comfortable even right next to the charcoal grill.

The space was spacious with plenty of seating, so it seemed like the perfect place to come back to for a gathering with family or friends near Sagajeong.

*Self-serve bar*

On one side of the hall, there was a neatly set-up self-serve bar, so I could grab extra side dishes without feeling awkward. It said the restaurant received a 'Very Excellent' hygiene rating from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and it was indeed noticeably clean overall.

## Menu board and discount benefits

![Menu board listing the charcoal-grilled set and other dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-09-1pbew-909.webp)

It said they use 100% domestic Japonica freshwater eel, shipped directly from Jeolla Province and prepared fresh daily. The main offering is the charcoal-grilled set menu, and there were also lunch specials and other dishes like eel soup (₩9,000).

![Wall sign listing drink menu and discount benefits](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-10-1c817-966.webp)

Among the drinks, wild ginseng liquor (₩15,000), which pairs well with eel, caught my eye. And the benefits written on the wall were quite impressive. There's an event offering a free eel to seniors 80 and older or pregnant women (with maternity ID). There's also a 10% discount for police and firefighter families, so the range of benefits felt generous.

## Today's pick — Charcoal-Grilled Snow Mushroom Wild Ginseng Eel 2-Person Set (₩79,000)

Since I was there anyway, I figured I'd properly try the signature menu, so I ordered the set.

### Yeoju charcoal grilling

After ordering, it wasn't long before high-heat Yeoju white charcoal came out, and the heat was intense. They said the charcoal burns at 1,000 degrees, and thanks to the strong fire, the eel cooked quickly.

![Yeoju white charcoal glowing in the brazier](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-13-1dbcx-966.webp)

![Grill grate over the heated charcoal](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-14-1d90l-966.webp)

A staff member placed the eel on the grill and handled everything from trimming to grilling. I didn't have to grill it myself and could just wait comfortably to eat — it was really convenient.

![Thick freshwater eel grilling on the grate](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-15-10w5p-966.webp)

![Charcoal-grilled eel with a crispy exterior](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-16-1kx4m-966.webp)

The eel flesh was on the thick side, but the bones were cleanly removed so there was nothing to catch in your throat. Grilled hard over the charcoal, it was crispy outside and soft and fluffy inside. The fat wasn't overly greasy, and a nutty flavor came through the more I chewed, so I didn't get tired of it.

### Snow mushroom & cultivated wild ginseng root

The set comes with white pine-mushroom-shaped snow mushroom and cultivated wild ginseng root.

![Plate of white snow mushroom and cultivated wild ginseng root](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-17-y34f2-966.webp)

![Snow mushroom grilling at the edge of the grill](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-18-18anz-966.webp)

I lightly grilled the mushroom at the edge of the grill and ate it together with the eel. Adding the chewy mushroom texture made for a much more fun bite than eating eel alone. The subtle scent of the wild ginseng root came through too, giving it a real health-tonic feel!!!

### Stone-bowl sushi rice, Tongyeong oyster jeotgal & doenjang jjigae

![Basic side dish spread of stone-bowl sushi rice, Tongyeong oyster jeotgal, and doenjang jjigae](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-21-jba0i-966.webp)

The basic setup comes with seasoned stone-bowl sushi rice, low-sodium Tongyeong oyster jeotgal (salted seasoned oysters), and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). I put a piece of eel on the rice and topped it with a bit of oyster jeotgal to make my own eel sushi.

![Eel sushi made with rice, eel, and oyster jeotgal](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-22-19hcm-966.webp)

The spicy, salty oyster jeotgal cut through the richness of the eel, and the combination worked surprisingly well together. The doenjang jjigae was also packed with tofu and zucchini!! It tasted slightly spicy like a gochujang stew, yet still savory~~~?? Thanks to this combination, I thought it'd also be a great Sagajeong Station spot to come for a drink.

### Grilled potato & nurungji sungnyung

While grilling the eel, they placed small potatoes next to the charcoal under the grill. By the time I finished the eel, they were ready to pull out, and they turned out fluffy and satisfying as a little extra bite.

![Fluffy grilled small potatoes cooked beside the charcoal](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-23-12vuy-966.webp)

![Warm nurungji sungnyung served as a palate cleanser](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel/cheonsangae-jangeo-myeonmok-sagajeong-eel-24-1x5ix-966.webp)

Midway through the meal, I requested nurungji sungnyung (scorched rice tea) via the tablet, and they served it warm. The savory scorched rice tea cleansed my palate nicely and left my stomach feeling settled. The sungnyung is free, so make sure to try it!! Order it about 10 minutes ahead!
