Aemo Kkotgejang started in 1990 in Gumi, North Gyeongsang, and is now run by the second generation as a crab specialty restaurant. With this new Seoul location, you can now try Aemo Kkotgejang's signature crab in Apgujeong too. There's a big standing sign out front introducing the signature seasoned crab and soy crab, so it wasn't hard to find.

I was especially curious about the spicy seasoned crab, since it's made spicy without capsaicin or artificial seasoning. Anyone who loves spicy food would probably be pretty intrigued. 🌶️

Walking into Aemo Kkotgejang Apgujeong Main Branch, it was cleaner than I expected. The place isn't huge, but there are partitions between tables, so I didn't feel too self-conscious while eating.

After ordering, the side dishes came out first. Seaweed, seaweed salad, pickled vegetables, seasoned bean sprouts—several sides that go well with crab.

Seaweed soup came along too, and overall the table felt quite full. I tried each side dish, and they were all clean-tasting and good.

Above all, the owner was incredibly kind, which made the whole meal feel pleasant.

And finally, the soy crab arrived. 🦀 Even in photos, the crab looks pretty sizeable, right? Eating it, what I liked most was how generous the meat was.

Sometimes with crab dishes the shell looks big but there's barely any meat once you pick it apart—but here the meat was really substantial, so it was fun picking through each piece. The roe and innards visible when I opened the shell looked delicious too.

## Soy crab that isn't too salty or fishy

When I eat soy crab, saltiness and fishiness are what I pay the most attention to. Overly salty soy crab has you reaching for water or rice after just a few bites, but personally I didn't find Aemo Kkotgejang's version overly salty.

It had that characteristic savory-salty soy crab flavor, but at a level that wasn't too much to eat with rice.

And the fishy taste wasn't strong either. If you prefer a moderately seasoned style over an intensely salty one, I think you'd be pretty satisfied.

## Crab meat over rice: the best bite of the meal

Soy crab really tastes best with rice. I piled crab meat on rice, added a bit of the soy sauce, and with the savory crab meat plus the salty-savory soy sauce, the rice just disappeared.

It's good wrapped in seaweed too, and good mixed with rice inside the crab shell. They're not kidding when they call this a 'rice thief.' 😂

## Trying the noodles alongside the crab

I also had noodles alongside the crab, and they went together better than I expected. After eating rice with the soy crab and adding noodles on top, it made for a very filling meal.

Next time I want to come with my husband and properly try the seasoned crab too.

Honestly, the dish I was most curious about that day was the spicy seasoned crab. The restaurant markets it almost like a signature dish, and I'd heard it's really spicy, so I held off this time. My husband usually handles spicy food well, so I'm planning to come back with him and try it together. I might even turn it into a little spice-tolerance contest to see who reaches for water first. 😂
