It is a good nearby option when you have plans around Euljiro 1(il)-ga, need a lunch spot as an office worker, or want a light dinner after work. It also seemed perfect for those sudden moments when you are out running errands nearby, get hungry, and desperately want tteokbokki. That was me. (This is a review of the Cheonggye Instant Branch.) It is way too cute. The shop did not feel overly formal, which I liked—it was somewhere you could just walk into and eat comfortably. It did not feel awkward to chat while eating tteokbokki, either; it had an easy, friend-friendly vibe. There are so many kinds of tteokbokki these days, with loads of options depending on your taste, but I think the one I crave most often is still tteokbokki that sticks to the basics. But every single table—the one beside me, the one in front, even the one by the kitchen—was having instant tteokbokki, so I did regret it a little. (And I overheard that the spicy instant tteokbokki is doggone hot,,) So the staff member asked whether I would be okay with it, or whether I would prefer medium spice with the sauce served separately. . . . I was like, ah ㅠ just how spicy is it lol. The wheat-rice cakes had that properly chewy texture, and the sauce had soaked in well, so the first bite was good. Next time I want to challenge myself with medium spice!! Beyond tteokbokki, there were plenty of Korean snack dishes such as sundae (Korean blood sausage), fried snacks, gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), and fish cakes, so it was great for enjoying several things at once! If choosing is difficult, there are also sets with multiple items, a nice option for anyone who wants to try a bit of everything. With the tteokbokki as the star, of course,, add gimbap. Add sundae. Add liver. I still cannot get used to places not giving you makjang dipping sauce. The sweetness of the wheat-rice cakes made me happy. The interior felt roomier than I expected from the outside. They used the space all the way to the kitchen really well, and I think there were around eight or nine tables. The space itself was compact, but it had the warm, familiar atmosphere characteristic of an old neighborhood shop, which I loved. The basic side dish, danmuji (pickled yellow radish), is self-service ‼️ Being able to take as much as you need was a pass, too.
