## In short

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is an instant tteokbokki (spicy simmered rice cake) snack bar near Cheonggyecheon, right in front of Exit 3 of Euljiro 1-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Instant tteokbokki for two at 11,000 won per person and a twisted fish cake skewer were simmered in a pot on the tabletop induction burner with jjolmyeon (chewy noodles), fried mandu (dumplings), cabbage and boiled egg, and the egg yolk was stirred into the sauce and spooned over the rice cakes and dumplings. Hyeonseoni-ne is an easy, familiar place to cook and share one pot at the table.

A finished plate of tteokbokki is great, but there's a different kind of fun in setting a pot in the middle of the table and simmering it together. That's the mood I was in today, so I headed to Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, a tteokbokki spot near Cheonggyecheon. We ordered instant tteokbokki for two and twisted skewer fish cake — a generous spread of Korean snack food.

## Inside Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, past the cartoon sign

Above the entrance of Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch hangs a big sign with a character eating tteokbokki. Thanks to the illustration of Cheonggyecheon and Seoul's cityscape, even hunting for the shop's name was fun for the eyes. Step inside and the same character greets you again, this time in a pink neon sign. The outdoor sign and the indoor decor tie together, giving the place a clear personality.

Inside there are tables with white tops and brown seats. Each table has an induction burner built into the center, set up for two people to sit facing each other over a shared pot. It's less about atmosphere and more about a space made for sharing food with company. The menu is posted large on the wall, so single dishes, sets, and extra add-ins are all easy to see at a glance. It lists instant tteokbokki at ₩11,000 per person, with a minimum order of two. The set includes rice cake, fish cake, jjolmyeon noodles, vegetables, fried mandu, and egg. It's worth double-checking prices and hours with the restaurant before visiting.

## What comes in the instant tteokbokki pot for two?

When the pot of instant tteokbokki from Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch arrived, the first thing I did was scan the ingredients. Jjolmyeon noodles sat piled in the center, topped with golden-fried mandu. Around the edges were plump rice cakes, an egg, and thickly cut cabbage and green onion. Over the red broth, every ingredient's color still stood out clearly.

Since it wasn't just rice cakes but noodles, dumplings, and egg all together, I found myself pausing over what to eat first. Whether to soak the mandu longer in the broth, or save the egg for later — even these small choices are part of the meal. The charm of an instant hot pot is that everyone can eat from the same pot even if they like different things. It's the kind of spread that comes to mind when you want to try a little bit of everything at a Cheonggyecheon restaurant.

## The twisted fish cake skewer arrives in its own broth

![Twisted skewer fish cake served in broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk-09-1inz8-966.webp)

The twisted skewer fish cake we ordered alongside came out in a separate bowl of broth. The folded fish cake rising above the broth looked nothing like the tteokbokki pot. I liked being able to have a different broth on the side instead of only eating ingredients coated in red sauce.

The fish cake in the tteokbokki gets scooped up along with the red sauce, while the separate one gets dipped into its own broth. It's a familiar combo of tteokbokki and fish cake, but one keeps simmering while the other can be eaten right away — each bringing its own kind of fun.

## How the color and thickness change as the pot simmers

![Tteokbokki broth starting to boil](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk-10-f3dt3-966.webp)

![Rice cake, fish cake, and cabbage lifted by ladle](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk-11-10qoy-966.webp)

Once the burner heats up, the broth starts bubbling from the edges of the pot. The jjolmyeon and vegetables, which had been sitting separately, loosen up and mix with the sauce, and the mandu soaks up the red broth too. Stirring the ingredients a bit brings the fish cake and rice cake from underneath up to the top, and the look of the pot keeps changing.

Scoop with the ladle and rice cake, fish cake, and cabbage all come up together. Eating each ingredient on its own is nice, but there's a different kind of fun in a single spoonful that holds several at once. The plump shape of the rice cake, the thin folded fish cake, and the long noodles all contrast within one pot. Cutting the jjolmyeon into manageable lengths with scissors makes it easier to scoop up alongside the other ingredients. The mandu also changes from its initial golden look to one soaked in sauce. Switching between fishing out a single piece of rice cake and scooping mandu with vegetables together keeps chopsticks and ladle both busy. It's a welcome find when searching for a Cheonggyecheon restaurant to land on a meal this focused on one shared pot.

## Stirring the boiled egg yolk into the tteokbokki sauce

![Small plate with rice cake, noodles, fish cake, and egg](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk-12-1g9ko-966.webp)

![Boiled egg cut in half showing the yolk](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk-13-18zbk-966.webp)

I moved a bit of rice cake, noodles, and fish cake onto my small plate, then topped it with one egg. Unlike constantly peering into the shared pot, this felt like a small complete meal on my own plate. Rather than piling a lot on at once, moving over just enough to eat made it easier to pick and choose other ingredients too.

Cutting into the egg reveals a firmly cooked yolk. Eating the white coated in broth and stirring the yolk bit by bit into the sauce works really well together. Pairing the yolk-mixed sauce with rice cake or mandu makes for a more satisfying bite than eating the egg on its own. It's not a flashy topping, but it felt like an ingredient this pot would be missing without it.

## The last of the pot, darker than when it started

![Tteokbokki pot in its final, darker-colored stage](https://img.superchart.com/images/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk/cheonggyecheon-instant-tteokbokki-egg-yolk-14-18fik-966.webp)

What stuck with me at Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch wasn't anything unusual, but the pleasure of simmering familiar ingredients together. Adding the separately ordered fish cake meant we weren't locked into just the one pot and could switch back and forth. It feels like a good fit for a day when you want to sit across from a friend and enjoy Korean snack food without any fuss. If you're out looking for a Cheonggyecheon restaurant and craving a hot pot loaded with rice cake, noodles, and mandu, this one's worth remembering.
