I’d been craving jjamppong (spicy Korean-Chinese noodle soup) for days 🍜 Lately I hadn’t had a chance to eat out, so I’d just been waiting for the right moment. I had something to do near Yeoksam Station, so while I was there, I stopped by the nearby Jjamppong Jijon Yeoksam Branch (짬뽕지존 역삼점).

## A café-like exterior and plenty of seating

From outside, it looked so much like a café that I checked the sign once more before going in—was I really at a Chinese restaurant? There were outdoor tables, too, and the place was quite large.

There were lots of seats, so I thought it would be fine for a group visit. It also felt like a place where eating alone wouldn’t make you self-conscious. In places with limited seating, I sometimes feel awkward taking up a table by myself, but Jjamppong Jijon Yeoksam Branch seemed to take away that pressure.

Once I sat down, they brought over a new packet of pickled radish and bottled water. There’s pickled radish and a water dispenser at the self-service bar, so I thought it was interesting that they served packaged pickled radish, too. There’s rice at the self-service bar as well, so if you order jjamppong, you can add rice to the leftover broth and make jjamppongbap (jjamppong rice).

## Original-flavor jjamppong and fried eggplant

- Fried eggplant (₩19,000)
- Jjamppong (₩13,000)

There were lots of jjamppong options, including soft tofu jjamppong and sujebi jjamppong with hand-torn dough flakes, plus jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) and jjajjamyeon, a half-and-half noodle dish! But today, jjamppong only 🤘

### The fried eggplant with the tempting recommendation badge

I’d originally settled on jjamppong and tangsuyuk (Korean sweet-and-sour pork) in my head, but the moment I saw the fried eggplant photo, I changed my mind and betrayed the tangsuyuk haha. It even had a recommendation badge, which made me too curious to resist.

The fried eggplant I tried first was absolutely worthy of that recommendation badge. The batter was thin and crisp, while the eggplant was plump and juicy—properly crisp outside, tender inside. Crunch! When you bite into it, the eggplant juices spread right through your mouth.

The savory soy-based sauce was infused with scallion aroma, so it wasn’t greasy and really got my appetite going. Unusually, it also had thin slices of meat in the sauce, making it fun to hunt down the salty little pieces. If you normally only order tangsuyuk at Chinese restaurants, this would be a great different dish to try at least once. A menu item I genuinely recommend 👍

### The broth and noodles of original-flavor Jijon jjamppong

Jjamppong Jijon (original flavor)

- Jijon (original flavor): Signature
- Hell (Level 1): 1.5 times as spicy as Shin Ramyun
- Hell (Level 2): Intense heat
- Hell (Level 3): 4 times as spicy as Shin Ramyun
- Hell (Level 4): Extremely spicy

You can choose among five spice levels, from original-flavor Jijon to Hell levels 1–4, and there are options for adding soft tofu and various other ingredients. Since it was my first visit, I ordered the signature original flavor without any add-ons.

I thought it would be seafood jjamppong, but it actually had both seafood and meat! The rich broth carried both refreshing seafood flavor and savory meat flavor. All the seafood shells had been removed, leaving only the meat, so it was easy to eat.

The broth was quite red, but when I lifted the noodles, it didn’t look as spicy as I expected. The noodles were thin and springy. I like noodles with that bouncy, chewy texture.

I had lunch late because of my schedule and was starving, so I slurped it down. I was glad I ordered the original flavor. If I’d ordered a spicy level, I might not have been able to eat quickly and would have been frustrated haha.

I usually handle a decent amount of spice, so by my standards, I didn’t think it was spicy while eating it. It had that red-broth kind of flavor you get with yukgaejang...?? With Jjamppong Jijon’s original flavor, I could enjoy the rich taste of the broth rather than feeling strong heat. If you like a warming, spicy jjamppong, it might be good to go up a spice level. I think up to 1.5 times the heat of Shin Ramyun would still be delicious rather than overly spicy, right?

## A meal that made me want fried eggplant again

The combination of rich-broth jjamppong and crispy, juicy fried eggplant was so good. I was curious about the tangsuyuk, too, but the fried eggplant was satisfying enough to leave me very pleased. I’d order the fried eggplant again on my next visit.

Jjamppong Jijon is a good stop when you want a simple but delicious meal near Yeoksam Station, or when you’re craving Chinese food for lunch. For a solo meal, one bowl of jjamppong works perfectly; for a group, there are dishes such as tangsuyuk, yuringi (fried chicken with citrus soy sauce), and fried eggplant to share alongside it!
