## In short

Yaksudong Haemul Teombeong is a seafood stew restaurant in front of Yaksu Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, specialising in agujjim (spicy braised monkfish) and haemuljjim since 1994. A medium-size monkfish and seafood jjim ordered at the mild level came with fried rice and a giant steamed egg custard that stood taller than a soju glass, gentle enough for a spice-shy friend to finish. With a wide main hall and extra seating at the back, Yaksudong Haemul Teombeong also works for group dinners.

Today's post is about my visit to Yaksudong Haemul Teombeong, one of Seoul's top 3 agujjim (spicy monkfish and seafood stew) restaurants. This place has been serving agujjim for 30 years, so naturally I was super curious about the taste! Here's my honest, detailed review 🤩

This is what the storefront looks like. It's apparently been featured on a bunch of TV shows! And as you can see on the sign, it's been in business since 1994 — over 30 years of history 👀

## Inside Yaksudong Haemul Teombeong: seating and atmosphere

Here's the interior of Yaksudong Haemul Teombeong. The tables are big and the place is pretty spacious! There's seating further inside too, so group gatherings are no problem 👍🏼

![Menu board listing monkfish and octopus dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap-07-1pc5x-900.webp)

## The menu and how to pick a spice level

Here's the menu. The mains are agu (monkfish) dishes and nakji (octopus) dishes, and true to being an agujjim specialist, the menu is fairly simple. You can also adjust the spice level to your taste! Just note that ordering according to your party size is required ✨

![Banchan spread including water kimchi and savory pancake](https://img.superchart.com/images/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap-08-hneax-900.webp)

## What banchan (side dishes) come with the meal?

Everything besides the agujjim was included as banchan (side dishes), and they really came through! Water kimchi, savory pancake, yuzu cabbage salad, potato salad and more — the side dish lineup was impressive. And every single side was delicious... the hand skills here are no joke.

I ordered the agujjim, fried rice, and steamed egg custard ✔️

## Medium-size monkfish and seafood jjim at the mild level

![Medium-size agujjim piled high with seafood](https://img.superchart.com/images/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap-09-1c95l-1200.webp)

Isn't the visual of this agujjim insane..! Loaded with snow crab, octopus, shrimp and all kinds of seafood on top of the monkfish. It really came out stacked like a tower.

There's even a whole plump octopus leg in there. The staff cut it up nicely for us to eat!

![Agujjim topped with a whole octopus leg](https://img.superchart.com/images/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap-10-1oxa6-900.webp)

The monkfish itself was plump and huge..! The meat was so tender it was a joy to eat 🤤 It's not one of Seoul's top 3 agujjim spots for nothing 👀

![Picking up a piece of plump monkfish meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap-11-52z9k-900.webp)

![Spicy seafood stew with shrimp and crab](https://img.superchart.com/images/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap-12-1bxun-900.webp)

And the shrimp and crab were also plump and full of meat 👍🏼 The sauce was spicy but clean, with insane depth of flavor. We went with the mild spice level, and even my spice-shy friend enjoyed it!

And you can't have agujjim without a drink..! We had a refreshing soju-and-beer mix 🍻 The glass even came straight out of the fridge, so it was extra cold, haha.

## Is the fried rice worth ordering?

![Fried rice stir-fried in the kitchen](https://img.superchart.com/images/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap-13-1frvf-900.webp)

And you can't skip the fried rice!! It's stir-fried in the kitchen and comes out with crispy rice bits too ✨

![A spoonful of fried rice mixed with crispy rice bits](https://img.superchart.com/images/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap-14-1pnzg-900.webp)

Took a big spoonful of this... A good post-meal fried rice is essential, and this place nails it. Make sure to order the fried rice!

## How big is the giant steamed egg custard?

![Giant steamed egg custard ordered as a side dish](https://img.superchart.com/images/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap-15-fojj4-900.webp)

I figured I'd be missing out without a side dish, so I ordered this. I thought the price seemed a bit high, but the size of this egg custard was massive 👀 Worth every won.

Soft and moist giant steamed egg custard, it really went perfectly with the agujjim! Would have been a shame not to order it 🥹💛

![Giant egg custard compared in size to a soju glass](https://img.superchart.com/images/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap/yaksu-haemul-teombeong-gyeranjjim-bokkeumbap-16-1th7q-900.webp)

A comparison shot with a soju glass. The egg custard is really huge, right..!🤩🤩

## Final verdict on Yaksudong Haemul Teombeong

There was an image of the owner's face posted up inside. Putting your face on the wall like that means you're confident, and honestly, Yaksudong Haemul Teombeong lived up to it! You could really tell this place has 30 years of experience behind it.

The restaurant was super clean and everyone was friendly at this Yaksu-dong agujjim spot, Haemul Teombeong! The customers spanned a wide range of ages too, which tells you it's been a beloved local spot for a long time! If you're looking for genuinely delicious agujjim in Seoul, I highly recommend Yaksudong Haemul Teombeong ✨
