## In short

Chisot Yeoksam Main Branch is a Japanese restaurant specializing in eel rice bowls, located between Yeoksam Station and Eonju Station in Gangnam, Seoul. A solo after-work visit brought the hitsumabushi set, eaten three ways—plain, with seaweed, chives and wasabi, then as ochazuke—plus a side of steamed egg. The salmon menu was sold out, which was a shame, but the ever-changing flavors kept every bite interesting, and a return visit is already planned.

There are days when, after work, you just want to end the day with something delicious~ This particular day I really wanted a proper meal to unwind after work, so I went searching for good restaurants near Yeoksam Station and ended up at Chisot Yeoksam Main Branch. I love eel rice bowls anyway, and I'd been looking for a clean, tidy Japanese restaurant near Yeoksam Station—this place caught my eye right away.

## Heading to Chisot Yeoksam after work: location and vibe

Sadly the salmon menu was sold out that day. I was curious about it too, but saved it for next time and went straight for the eel rice bowl without hesitation! What I ordered was the hitsumabushi sang (regular set).

## The hitsumabushi set—striking from the first look

![Hitsumabushi set served with its accompaniments](https://img.superchart.com/images/chisot-yeoksam-hitsumabushi-sang-dinner/chisot-yeoksam-hitsumabushi-sang-dinner-11-bqv7x-900.webp)

After ordering, I waited a bit and out came a neatly arranged set. It wasn't just the eel rice bowl on its own—it came with several accompaniments, giving it a pretty thoughtful feel at a glance. Maybe because I was hungry after work, but the moment I saw the eel, my mouth started watering...

The eel was grilled to a golden brown with the special tare sauce brushed generously on top. As the eel and sauce mingled, a sweet, savory aroma drifted up~ There's no resisting that look. Haha.

What's fun about hitsumabushi is that you don't just eat it like a regular eel rice bowl—you get to enjoy it several different ways. First you eat the eel and rice plain, then you add seaweed, chives, wasabi and the like, and finally you pour warm ochazuke broth over it to finish. I liked that the flavor shifts little by little within one bowl, so you never get tired of it till the last bite.

### 1. First, the eel's natural flavor

To start, I ate the eel and rice as is, with nothing added. Of course you have to try it plain first!

![First spoonful of eel and rice eaten plain](https://img.superchart.com/images/chisot-yeoksam-hitsumabushi-sang-dinner/chisot-yeoksam-hitsumabushi-sang-dinner-14-ykyxh-900.webp)

The eel was well soaked in the sweet, savory tare sauce, and eaten with the rice, the umami really came through. The eel's characteristic savory flavor was great, and paired with the warm rice, it felt satisfying and hearty. Maybe because it was dinner after work, but that one spoonful made me so happy.

### 2. Seaweed + chives + wasabi combo

Second, I topped it with seaweed, chives and wasabi. Eaten this way, the sweetness of the eel gets layered with the aroma of chives and the sharp kick of wasabi, making it feel a bit cleaner.

![Second style of hitsumabushi mixed with toppings](https://img.superchart.com/images/chisot-yeoksam-hitsumabushi-sang-dinner/chisot-yeoksam-hitsumabushi-sang-dinner-17-1q1y1-900.webp)

![A piece of eel topped with wasabi](https://img.superchart.com/images/chisot-yeoksam-hitsumabushi-sang-dinner/chisot-yeoksam-hitsumabushi-sang-dinner-18-ghcil-900.webp)

I personally loved this combination too. When the eel starts feeling a bit rich, a touch of wasabi is exactly right!

### 3. Finally, warm ochazuke

And the final course of hitsumabushi! I poured on the warm broth and ate it as ochazuke. As the warm broth soaked into the rice, it gave off a completely different feel from the eel I'd eaten before.

Even though I was already fairly full, finishing it warm somehow kept my spoon going—magic...

The steamed egg side dish was also so good!!

If you love eel rice bowls, being able to enjoy hitsumabushi three different ways makes for a fun eating experience.

## How was it as an after-work meal?

The eel blended beautifully with the sweet, savory tare sauce, it was fun adding seaweed, chives and wasabi, and finishing with warm ochazuke~ Getting three flavors from one bowl meant I enjoyed it right to the last bite. It was a bit disappointing that salmon was sold out, but I want to try other menu items next time, so I'd definitely come back. Ending this genuinely satisfied review here~~!
