With weather this lovely lately, I feel like so many people are heading to Anguk or Bukchon for dates. I went on a Bukchon date with a friend recently too! We visited Muhwawon, a Bukchon perfume workshop that’s quite well known. I was sooo satisfied with it, so I recommend it for a special indoor date that will leave you with memories, haha.

## Muhwawon location and visitor information

Hours are 12:00–22:00. You can park opposite the Muhwawon building; the additional fee is ₩1,200 per 10 minutes, up to ₩25,000.

## What is the atmosphere like at Muhwawon, the Bukchon perfume workshop?

When you arrive in front of the building, you’ll see the Muhwawon sign like this. They send instructions on how to enter the day before your visit, and you can head up to the third floor at your scheduled time.

I heard Muhwawon’s name carries the beautiful meaning of a fragrance blooming like mist in a garden. The brand was inspired by mist rising from the Secret Garden of Changdeokgung Palace, and its distinctly tranquil yet stylish atmosphere—where tradition and modernity come together—was so charming.

There were seats farther inside too, so I sat over here.

## Make your own perfume with 48 scents

My friend and I chose the premium 50ml perfume. You can make not only perfume but also a car air freshener or diffuser, so there is a wide range of choices depending on your taste or needs. I heard you can also have the exact perfume you made reproduced later!

First, you take a short theory lesson on a tablet. Headphones were provided at every seat, which was convenient.

You can smell 48 different top, middle, and base notes, check every scent you like, then combine 6–9 fragrance materials to make your own perfume. And don’t forget to refresh your nose, tired from all that scent sampling, with coffee beans in between~

Unlike other perfume workshops, Muhwawon lets you blend scents that modernly reinterpret the mood and feeling of Korean nature—such as hanji (traditional Korean paper), Korean medicinal herbs, and temple incense. That gave it a truly distinctive quality compared with ordinary perfume workshops. So many of the scents I wanted were in this section, haha.

There were so many scents I liked that, after agonizing and agonizing, I finally managed to choose! When you show your first-round choices to the workshop instructor, they recommend scents that better match the perfume you want and explain everything in detail, so even beginners can understand easily.

Once you have an outline, it’s time to bring over your chosen fragrance materials and combine them! Doesn’t it look so luxurious? It was so different from the workshops I’d visited before that I was surprised 🫢

You add the selected fragrance materials one drop at a time, adjusting them as you go, and can test up to three rounds in total. The instructor samples the scent with you at this stage too, offering recommendations and help, so it wasn’t difficult.

There were parts of my first scent test that felt a little lacking, so for the second round I even added materials I hadn’t picked at all. Then, with the instructor’s help in the third round, it was complete! When you try what they recommend, the scent suddenly becomes so good, haha.

Once you finalize the top, middle, and base notes, the instructor calculates the ratios, and you add the fragrance materials using a beaker and scale. After adding everything and mixing it thoroughly, you pour it into the perfume bottle, and the instructor helps with the remaining finishing work!

Since my friend and I chose completely different things, even the colors were different! Haha. My friend made a slightly fresh floral scent, while I made one with a temple smell plus a woody forest scent.

They wrapped up our perfumes after we finished, and even the packaging had such a great feel—so luxurious, so luxurious. While waiting for the perfumes to be completed, we wrote a review for the event and received mini air fresheners too.

Isn’t it pretty? It was made from the samples I created during my first, second, and third tests. I hope everyone joins the review event and takes one home too! I hung mine in my dressing room, but I think it would be nice hanging in a car as well.

## The finished perfume and my overall verdict

To finish, I could attach the perfume name I chose on a clean, stylish silver label sticker, and it came out with quality every bit as wonderful as a brand perfume sold in stores! They say you can use it from two weeks after it matures, and I can’t wait..

The experience takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, and sampling all the different fragrance materials and putting together my own recipe was so fun that I completely lost track of time. I was also able to focus on blending with more peace of mind because I heard every material used here is a genuine ingredient with safety certification.

I thought it would be the perfect place to come for a date, make a scent that suits each other as a gift, or remember a special anniversary. If you are looking for a meaningful gift you can make yourself through an unusual Bukchon date or workshop experience, I strongly recommend visiting at least once!
