## How to find Hyeonseoni-ne from Euljiro 1-ga Station Exit 3

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is an instant tteokbokki (rice cake in spicy sauce) place a short walk from Euljiro 1-ga Station Exit 3. I'd been craving proper tteokbokki for a while, so I headed to Hyeonseoni-ne near the station. The signboard with the store name printed big makes it easy to spot.

## Kiosk ordering and the old-school tent dining room

Follow the sign into Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch and you'll spot the order kiosk right away. The menu board runs from single dishes to sets to instant-style options. Since I was here for old-school-style instant tteokbokki, I decided to eat in!

Utensils, pickled radish, and water are all self-service. I visited on a weekday right at rush hour and worried there'd be no seats, but luckily I was first in line, haha. Once I sat down, delivery pickups kept coming and customers trickled in one after another! I was surprised, though — there were way more tables than I expected, running from the entrance all the way to the back. Turns out there were even seats inside the tent. Truly an old-school-style spot.

## What comes in the 22,000-won instant tteokbokki for two?

Hyeonseoni-ne's instant tteokbokki is 22,000 won for two, and rice cake, fish cake, jjolmyeon noodles, vegetables, fried mandu (dumplings), and egg all come as standard toppings. It arrived quickly after ordering! Such a nostalgic sight... tteokbokki tastes good no matter how you eat it, haha. It had been a while since I'd had instant-style tteokbokki, so I was excited. Pickled radish and small plates were set up fast too.

Snack food just tastes better in that green bowl! The fish cake broth was nicely salty and refreshing, too.

With rice cake, fish cake, jjolmyeon noodles, vegetables, fried mandu, and egg all included as standard toppings, Hyeonseoni-ne's tteokbokki is seriously generous. It's plenty filling even without adding extra toppings. Each table has its own induction burner set into the middle, so you just simmer it right there at your seat — I was so hungry I got dizzy waiting...

After stirring it around for a bit, the tteokbokki was suddenly bubbling away merrily...! Time to eat.

### How the broth tastes and how chewy the rice cakes are

Quick, scoop up a bite. The sauce reduces down into the rice cake, vegetables, and jjolmyeon noodles — ah, the broth wasn't overly aggressive or sweet, it was exactly the spicy-but-clean flavor of original-style instant tteokbokki from childhood, so I kept eating more and more, haha.

The rice cake was also soft with a nice chewy texture, which I liked. I'm not a fan of overly chewy rice cake, but Hyeonseoni-ne's was exactly right for eating.

### The fried mandu included as standard

You can't even imagine instant tteokbokki without fried mandu (dumplings)... The crispy fried mandu, dipped in the broth, soaks up the sauce and turns soft yet nutty — just absurdly delicious. Whoever invented fried mandu is a genius, honestly.

## Finishing with 3,500-won fried rice

Fried rice is 3,500 won. After eating down a good portion of the tteokbokki, I added the classic Korean finishing move: fried rice. They lightly fried it up in the kitchen and brought it over — with ham and kimchi mixed in, it tasted almost like a savory kimchi fried rice and was delicious!

Fried rice is fried rice, whatever form it takes... I was so hungry I finished it off completely.

## Final verdict: when Hyeonseoni-ne is worth a visit

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch has been around a long time, and you can feel that familiar, nostalgic atmosphere unique to a spot that's held its ground this long. Rather than the intense, super-spicy tteokbokki trending these days, sometimes I just crave the old original-style instant tteokbokki I used to eat bubbling away in front of my school or around the neighborhood, haha. Guess I'm just getting old, can't help it.

If that's the mood you're in, or if you just prefer old-school-style snack food, I'd recommend giving Hyeonseoni-ne's tteokbokki a try. You can really taste the nostalgia! On a nice-weather day like now, it's also great to eat tteokbokki and then take a walk along the Euljiro streets or Cheonggyecheon stream. Drop by Hyeonseoni-ne next time you're craving light, easygoing snack food, haha.
