## In short

Hwangbihong is a Chinese restaurant in Busong-dong, Iksan, that has stayed in the same spot for 20 years, making its dishes with chive noodles and Korean beef bone broth simmered for 24 hours. Over an early family lunch of seafood siraegi jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup with dried radish greens), jjajangmyeon, egg fried rice and tangsuyuk, the jjamppong stood out most, its broth deeper and nuttier than the usual version thanks to the siraegi. For a different take on jjamppong in Iksan, Hwangbihong is a solid choice.

## What makes Hwangbihong in Busong-dong, Iksan different from an ordinary Chinese restaurant

I was looking for good jjamppong in Iksan and ended up at Hwangbihong, a Chinese restaurant with 20 years of history behind it. There are plenty of Chinese restaurants in Iksan, but I heard this one has a few points that set it apart from the usual spot, so I decided to check it out.

![Sign at Hwangbihong introducing chive noodles and 24-hour bone broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-03-322px-900.webp)

First, they use chive noodles!
And second, their jjamppong is made with a deep bone broth simmered for 24 hours. Wanting a really good jjamppong, I picked Hwangbihong for an early lunch with my family — and in the end, I was very satisfied.

Hwangbihong is located at 43 Busong-ro 6-gil, Iksan-si, Jeonbuk-do. It's open daily from 11:00 to 20:00, with a break time from 15:00 to 17:00, so plan your visit accordingly.

## Inside Hwangbihong: the dining room and how the kitchen handles ingredients

The place had that comfortable, familiar feel of an old-school Chinese restaurant, and the tables were spaced out generously.
It seemed like a good spot for a filling lunch, and also a comfortable place to visit with family.

### Why Hwangbihong's ingredient care shows on the plate

According to the shop's own description, they don't use giant squid but regular squid, and they make their own geotjeori (fresh kimchi) with domestic napa cabbage and chili powder.
They also get monthly pest control checks through CESCO. After 20 years running the same spot, it was clear they still pay attention to these basic details.

![Self-serve bar with kimchi and danmuji](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-06-ldguf-900.webp)

## Self-serve side dishes and the bone broth pot behind the glass at Hwangbihong

Walking in, I found a self-serve side dish corner on one side.
Kimchi, danmuji (pickled radish), and onion were all there to take as much as needed, which was convenient.

![Danmuji and onion brought over on a plate](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-07-11dsx-900.webp)

I grabbed a generous amount of the danmuji and onion that no Chinese restaurant meal is complete without, and waited for the food.
Plates, small plates, spoons, and scissors were all set up for self-serve use too, so overall it was a very convenient setup.

![Kitchen and bone broth pot visible through the glass window](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-08-1sf84-900.webp)

Further inside, I could see the kitchen through a glass window, including a big pot with bone broth simmering away for 24 hours. Seeing that made me even more excited for the food.

## What's on the menu at Hwangbihong

Hwangbihong has a wide range of noodle dishes — jjajangmyeon, gan-jjajang, jjamppong, and meat jjamppong among them.
There are also plenty of rice dishes like fried rice and jjamppong-bap.
You can also order dishes like tangsuyuk, seafood stir-fried jjajang, and fried dumplings. The noodle dishes made with chive noodles are a real signature here. Their jjamppong, made with beef bone broth simmered for 24 hours, is also a standout, so I tried the seafood siraegi jjamppong version.
With the basic side dishes lined up and waiting, the food finally started arriving one by one.

## Tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork): crisp outside, big tender chunks of meat

First bite: tangsuyuk!

![Golden fried tangsuyuk from Hwangbihong](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-11-4v7by-900.webp)

The tangsuyuk was fried to a nice golden brown, crispy on the outside and tender inside, with generously sized chunks of meat that were satisfying to chew.

![Cross-section of tangsuyuk showing a big chunk of meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-13-15pr5-900.webp)

Dipped in the sweet and tangy sauce — you really can't skip tangsuyuk at a Chinese restaurant. I personally enjoyed it a lot!

![Jjajangmyeon at Hwangbihong made with green chive noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-14-16ke6-900.webp)

## Jjajangmyeon at Hwangbihong: green chive noodles under black bean sauce

For the jjajangmyeon, you mix the noodles into the rich jjajang sauce, and as you can see in the photo, it was unusual how the noodles had a greenish tint.

![Chive noodles lifted up, mixed with jjajang sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-15-1q0tr-900.webp)

The chewy noodles held onto the sweet, savory jjajang sauce nicely, making them great for slurping.
The sauce also had big chunky bits in it, so every bite delivered plenty of jjajang flavor.

## Fried rice: fluffy grains under a thick layer of egg

The fried rice had a thick egg topping, which made it look hearty right from the start!

Lifting up the egg revealed a heap of fluffy fried rice underneath!

With carrots and scallions mixed in, there was a nice crunch, and the egg added a savory, soft touch, making for a light yet filling fried rice.

## Seafood siraegi jjamppong: the standout dish of this Iksan lunch

And the dish that impressed me most that day was the seafood siraegi jjamppong.

![Seafood siraegi jjamppong loaded with seafood and dried radish greens](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-19-x9hi8-900.webp)

Just looking at it, the spicy broth was loaded with seafood, siraegi (dried radish greens), wood ear mushrooms, and vegetables.

![A spoonful of spicy jjamppong broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-21-xhuih-900.webp)

The broth was spicy and sharp, with a refreshing depth from the seafood, and the siraegi gave it a nuttier, deeper flavor than a regular jjamppong.

![Chewy chive noodles lifted out of the jjamppong](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-22-dnuav-900.webp)

![Clams and other seafood visible in the jjamppong](https://img.superchart.com/images/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong/iksan-busong-hwangbihong-seafood-siraegi-jjamppong-23-1xoh4-900.webp)

With the chewy chive noodles on top of the spicy broth, it honestly felt like something you'd crave as a hangover cure.
And with clams and other seafood mixed in, every spoonful of broth came with plenty of stuff to eat, so I enjoyed it all the way to the last drop.

## Is Hwangbihong worth a family lunch in Iksan?

True to a Chinese restaurant with 20 years of history, the jjamppong deepened by 24-hour bone broth combined with Hwangbihong's signature chive noodles was memorable.
Pairing the spicy, deep jjamppong broth with crispy-sweet tangsuyuk made for a really filling meal.
