## In short

Choburi Kimchi Jjigae Gojan Main Branch is a third-generation pork kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) restaurant in the back alley behind the BYC building at 25-si Plaza in Gojan-dong, Ansan. On a reserved weekend lunch, two servings of the stone-pot rice kimchi jjigae set (11,000 won per person) came with a 5,000-won skin-on raw pork topping, simmered at the table for 7 minutes on a timer set by the staff. Thick Korean pork, a sharp, spicy broth and free refills of rice, banchan and ramyeon noodles make Choburi Kimchi Jjigae a 200% return visit.

Today's spot is a place that's been around in Ansan for a really long time — if you're after a proper kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) loaded with pork, I recommend it.

## How to find Choburi in the alley behind the BYC building, and why to book weekend lunch

Choburi Kimchi Jjigae Gojan Main Branch sits in the alley behind the BYC building on the main road by 25-si Plaza in Gojan-dong. If you often pass through Ansan's Gojan new town area, you've probably spotted it at least once.

I'd always been curious since it's usually crowded, so I made a reservation before visiting — and sure enough, on a weekend lunch the tables filled up fast. There's often a wait on weekends and parking isn't easy either, so I'd recommend coming a bit outside mealtimes or taking public transit!

## Inside Choburi Kimchi Jjigae and the self-serve banchan bar

The dining room at Choburi Kimchi Jjigae Gojan Main Branch was clean overall, with generous spacing between tables that made it comfortable to eat. Personally I love how the utensils come individually wrapped — love that ♡

Choburi Kimchi Jjigae felt thoughtful about every little detail — from the instructions on how to eat the dish for the best flavor, to the nutty buckwheat tea, the apron, and the self-serve banchan bar (even the rice is unlimited)!

## Stone-pot rice kimchi jjigae set, 11,000 won per person, plus 5,000-won skin-on pork

Here's what I ordered:

- Stone-pot rice kimchi jjigae set, 2 servings (₩11,000 per person)
- Raw pork topping add-on (₩5,000)

As a total meat lover, even though the base kimchi jjigae already comes with pork, I added the raw pork topping on top.

The food came out quickly, and I didn't have to guess when to start eating — the staff set a timer for us and let us know we could dig in as soon as it went off. Apparently simmering it at the table for 7 minutes lets the ingredients' flavors fully come together, which is when Choburi's kimchi jjigae hits its best moment!

### The three banchan: stir-fried fish cake, pickled chili and gim (dried seaweed)

The banchan (side dishes) were just three simple ones — stir-fried fish cake, pickled chili, and gim (dried seaweed) — but every single one was good, so I kept going back to the self-serve bar for more. Apparently so many people asked about the sweet-tangy Choburi-style pickled chili that they now sell it separately!

## What exactly comes with the Choburi set?

Is this set not an absolute jackpot?ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ Golden gardenia stone-pot rice + pork kimchi jjigae + perilla-oil fried egg + unlimited rice, banchan and ramyeon noodles + a drink!!!!!

Ordering the set even got me a glossy perilla-oil fried egg — as a genuine big eater I kept going until I nearly burst.

## How the pork kimchi jjigae tastes with the skin-on pork topping

Following the instructions for how to eat it best — scoop some freshly cooked stone-pot rice into a bowl, top it with a fried egg, then add in the kimchi jjigae and mix it all together!!!!

Kimchi jjigae is common, but places that really do it well are rare. Choburi Kimchi Jjigae is the real deal. Maybe because they use raw Korean pork, but the thick cuts of pork loaded in had zero funky smell and a great chew, and even the fatty parts were nice and springy. The broth's spicy, savory depth was no joke too. It's the kind of flavor that keeps you eating even when you're full, haha.

## Finishing with sungnyung (toasted rice tea), ramyeon noodles and ice cream

No matter how full you are, a Korean dessert is non-negotiable. I had sungnyung (scorched-rice water) from the golden gardenia stone-pot rice, which had water poured in early on, then added extra broth to cook ramyeon noodles once the kimchi jjigae was about half gone, and finished it all off with a sweet little ice cream. Total perfection. Even a group of big eaters could get the full, hearty course here.

## Is Choburi Kimchi Jjigae in Gojan-dong worth a visit?

If you're looking for a proper kimchi jjigae spot in Ansan, this is one I'd recommend without hesitation. Knowing they use 100% domestic ingredients right down to the chili powder makes it feel even more trustworthy, and between the deep, clean broth and the generous amount of meat, my return-visit intent is 200%.
