## In short

Todam Hwadok Saengseongui is a clay-oven grilled fish restaurant on the 3rd floor of 459 Anyangcheon-ro in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi. Over lunch the writer ordered the mackerel set at 17,000 won and the boribulgui (dried yellow corvina) set at 26,000 won, both served with individual hot pot rice, cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) and a salad bar, with the corvina eaten alongside rice soaked in green tea. Crisp-skinned, juicy fish, a tidy salad bar and valet parking make Todam Hwadok Saengseongui an easy Gwangmyeong lunch spot.

I had an appointment in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi, and went for lunch at a local favorite, Todam Hwadok Saengseongui, Gwangmyeong branch.

I usually love grilled fish, so I often visit chains that specialize in it like Todam. But even with the same brand, the food quality and upkeep can feel different from branch to branch.

So whenever I go for grilled fish, I naturally end up checking not just the taste but also the atmosphere, cleanliness, and how well the place is generally managed.

This time too, I was looking for a grilled fish spot in Gwangmyeong and ended up here — the taste, atmosphere, cleanliness, salad bar upkeep, and even the individual bottled water all left me satisfied.

It wasn't just a place with good grilled fish; the overall management was so tidy that it made a great first impression as a Gwangmyeong restaurant.

## What the Gwangmyeong restaurant looks like: hanok-style wood hall and private rooms

Todam Hwadok Saengseongui Gwangmyeong branch is on the 3rd floor of the building, and the space was larger than I expected. Rather than the clean modern style you see everywhere these days, it had an antique feel reminiscent of a hanok (traditional Korean house). Thanks to the wood-toned interior, it had a comfortable, tidy feel befitting a Korean restaurant serving grilled fish and hot pot rice.

![Entrance with hanok-style wood-toned interior](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-07-4ukbq-966.webp)

![Interior of the Korean restaurant with an antique atmosphere](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-08-1yz2a-966.webp)

![Spacious hall with roomily arranged tables](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-09-1n3i6-966.webp)

![Interior with a private room for family gatherings](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-10-1o9nh-966.webp)

Overall the space was spacious with tables set roomily apart, and there were also private rooms, so it looked good for family meals or gatherings too.

![View of the restaurant after the lunch crowd had thinned out](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-11-1qtiu-966.webp)

The large restaurant was packed, almost full of guests. Seeing it nearly full even with rooms available made it clear this is a Gwangmyeong spot that draws a lot of lunch crowds.

When I visited it was lunchtime and nearly every seat was taken, so it was hard to take photos of the interior. By the time I finished eating and was heading out, a lot of guests had left, so I managed to snap a few shots of the space then.

Even within the same chain, I think the first impression can vary a lot depending on how well each branch is managed, and this Gwangmyeong branch of Todam Hwadok Saengseongui felt well put together overall. In particular, it felt like the owner was running the place directly, which might explain why every corner felt carefully maintained.

There were high chairs set up at the entrance, and a separate space for handwashing inside the restaurant.

## What we ordered: mackerel set 17,000 won, boribulgui set 26,000 won

On this visit we ordered the mackerel set (₩17,000) and the boribulgui (dried yellow corvina) set (₩26,000) at Todam Hwadok Saengseongui Gwangmyeong branch. Both were set menus served with warm hot pot rice.

![Two sets served with hot pot rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-13-1kgv1-966.webp)

![Menu board with set prices at Todam Hwadok Saengseongui](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-14-120oj-966.webp)

![Menu board listing à la carte and side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-15-18z9j-966.webp)

The menu at Todam Hwadok Saengseongui ranges from clay-oven grilled fish sets to boribulgui, braised pollock, tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties), and charcoal-grilled pork — a wide variety of set meals.

Beyond the sets, you can also order clay-oven fish, charcoal grilled items, and braised dishes à la carte, plus side dishes like steamed egg with pollock roe, buckwheat crepes, and seasoned skate.

Each set comes with an individual hot pot rice, and since it's freshly cooked and warm, it made for a hearty meal alongside the grilled fish.

## How does the clay-oven grilled fish taste?

![The clay oven used for grilling fish in the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-16-6ib38-966.webp)
*Clay oven*

Todam Hwadok Saengseongui grills fish at the high heat of a clay oven. Tasting it, the outside was golden and crispy while the inside stayed moist, which paired well with rice.

### The mackerel set at Todam Hwadok Saengseongui

The mackerel was quite a large piece, golden and crisp on the outside, moist inside — cooked well. They say the bigger the mackerel, the better the taste. The flesh was thick and savory with almost no fishy taste, so I enjoyed it a lot. Grilled in the clay oven, the crispy outside and moist inside made it great with rice.

### The boribulgui set with green tea rice

The boribulgui (dried yellow corvina) came with green tea served alongside, along with plastic gloves to make it easier to pick the flesh apart.

![Boribulgui set served with green tea](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-17-1e77d-966.webp)

![Plate of boribulgui with the flesh picked apart](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-18-1o0o2-966.webp)

![A spoonful of hot pot rice soaked in green tea with boribulgui](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-19-i5fqm-966.webp)

Spooning warm hot pot rice into the green tea and topping it with the salty boribulgui let me really taste that distinctive briny flavor.

The stone pot rice that came with the set was also freshly cooked and warm, which I loved — the steam rising when you open the lid looked so appetizing. The cheonggukjang served alongside was really good too. Rich and savory, it went well with both the warm stone pot rice and the grilled fish.

## What's on the salad bar? Pumpkin porridge and steamed sweet potato

![Neatly maintained salad bar corner](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-20-fzoh7-966.webp)

The salad bar you can enjoy alongside the main dishes was really well stocked. Every side dish was neat and well managed, and tasted good too.

![Side dishes including seasoned bellflower root and mung bean sprouts](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-21-4ymz4-966.webp)

The side dishes included seasoned bellflower root, mung bean sprouts, pickled cucumber, young radish kimchi, and seasoned mung bean jelly, and on top of that you could use the salad bar — the pumpkin porridge was a real standout. It was sweet and smooth, perfect for a bowl before the main meal.

![Sweet pumpkin porridge at the salad bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-22-bimiz-966.webp)

![Dessert corner with watermelon and steamed sweet potato](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik/gwangmyeong-grilled-fish-boribgulbi-jeongsik-23-bt6rt-966.webp)

The dessert corner had cool watermelon, nicely steamed sweet potato, and a coffee machine.

The mackerel set and boribulgui set portions were bigger than I expected, so I got really full. I wanted to try the small sweet potato too, but I was too full and left without it — a bit disappointing since I usually love sweet potato.

## Parking and visitor tips in Gwangmyeong
