## In short

Buja Hodu is a walnut pastry shop a 3-5 minute walk from the main Hwangnidan-gil street in Gyeongju, where the pastries are made with 100% rice flour around a whole walnut. On the last day of a Gyeongju trip, the writer shared a 10-piece freshly packed set (5 low-sugar red bean and 5 pea cream cheese) with friends at Gyeongju Station, then picked up a 15-piece gift box of low-sugar red bean, pea cream cheese and matcha for a sister who is dieting. With a whole walnut in the center and sweetness kept light, Buja Hodu works as a dessert gift for family.

While traveling in Gyeongju, I picked up one more easy snack for my sister on Hwangnidan-gil. She's dieting and studying hard for a certification these days, so I wanted something she could eat without guilt — walnut pastry! Unlike regular walnut pastry, this place uses whole walnuts, 100% rice, and low-sugar filling. A healthy dessert snack I found while traveling Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju :)

## Where is Buja Hodu on Hwangnidan-gil?

Buja Hodu (부자호두) sits about 3-5 minutes on foot from the main Hwangnidan-gil street. Their walnut pastry is made with '100% rice' instead of flour, and the filling is low-sugar too, apparently. And the feature that caught my eye the most! Unlike typical walnut pastries where the walnut is chopped small or just half a piece goes in, this one has a whole walnut inside as is!

## Buja Hodu walnut pastry flavors and packaging options

Buja Hodu's walnut pastries are made with 100% rice and a whole walnut inside.

![Introduction of low-sugar red bean and pea cream cheese walnut pastries](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box-05-7ynsf-900.webp)

Low-sugar red bean / pea cream cheese / matcha / almond praline. Four flavors total, ranging from the basic red bean to more unusual ones, so it seems easy to pick according to taste! *Almond praline is limited to 50 pieces a day. Packaging comes in either 'instant pack' for eating right away or 'box pack' good for gifting!

With Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) coming up, they also offer bojagi (wrapping cloth) packaging if you're giving these as a holiday gift. I chose both the instant pack and the box pack for gifting.

## The 10-piece fresh pack shared with friends at Gyeongju Station

First, before catching the train back to Seoul, we ate the instant pack with friends at Gyeongju Station! I went with 5 low-sugar red bean + 5 pea cream cheese, a 10-piece mix in total!

![10-piece mix of low-sugar red bean and pea cream cheese pastries](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box-12-4noqe-900.webp)

![A single whole walnut pastry held in hand](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box-13-4i5xk-900.webp)

We shared them one by one with friends, and everyone said the same thing —

> It's not as sweet as I expected, and it's good.

You'd think walnut pastry would be pretty sweet because of the filling, but thanks to the low-sugar filling the overall sweetness wasn't overdone, and it was light and easy to eat. We ate all kinds of things during the Gyeongju trip, but this was just right for a simple snack while waiting for the train.

## What went into the 15-piece gift box for my sister

![15-piece walnut pastry gift box for the sister](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box-14-zafvs-966.webp)

The walnut pastry gift box I gave my sister! It comes with 15 pieces, and for the gift box you can choose 3 flavors total including the original red bean, so I went with 5 low-sugar red bean + 5 pea cream cheese + 5 matcha.

![15 pieces of low-sugar red bean, pea cream cheese, and matcha flavors](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box-16-gq7u6-966.webp)

Being able to pick several flavors — my sister liked that too!

![Three flavors of walnut pastry laid out on a plate](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box-17-1mq6e-966.webp)

### Cut open: a whole walnut right in the center

Cutting open each flavor, I could see why they emphasize the whole walnut so much. The filling was packed full, and the whole walnut sat exactly in the center.

![Cross-section of low-sugar red bean pastry with whole walnut in the center](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box-19-kgkd1-900.webp)

![Cross-section of pea cream cheese walnut pastry](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box-20-eej1q-900.webp)

![Cross-section of matcha walnut pastry](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box-21-x4e50-900.webp)

You could also feel the walnut's nutty, chewy texture, which made it feel a bit different from pastries with just filling inside. The nuttiness of the whole walnut really came through. Maybe because it's made with 100% rice, it felt light overall, and most of all, since it wasn't too sweet, I kept reaching for more! With sweeter desserts you get tired of them after a few pieces, but this one was easy to keep picking up one at a time.

## Are Buja Hodu walnut pastries a good Gyeongju gift?

![Full arrangement of walnut pastries in the gift box](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box/gyeongju-hwangnidan-walnut-cake-gift-box-22-wseuy-966.webp)

What I liked most about Buja Hodu was, of course, that it has whole walnuts inside! And with 100% rice and low-sugar filling added on top, the overall sweetness wasn't overdone and it was light and easy to eat. It's fine as a snack to eat right away on Hwangnidan-gil, and since box packaging is available, it seems like a good dessert to give as a souvenir from a Gyeongju trip! Especially if you're looking for a not-too-intensely-sweet dessert to give parents or family, Buja Hodu's walnut pastries might be a good option, haha!

Shared one instant pack with friends at Gyeongju Station, and even gave my sister a 15-piece gift box — properly ate my share of walnut pastry! If you're looking for a light snack to remember your Gyeongju trip by on Hwangnidan-gil, or a dessert gift to bring home to family, I'd recommend Buja Hodu's walnut pastries with the whole walnut inside!
