## In short

Bigeumdo is a hanok Korean set-meal restaurant in Sokcho, Gangwon, serving hwangtae-gukbap (dried pollack soup with rice). A couple in their 40s stopped in for a morning date and ordered two servings of pollack soup with a zero-sugar cola, and the milky broth brought to the table in the pressure cooker itself, along with the jeotgal (salted seafood) side dishes made with southern-style seasoning, stood out most. Five minutes from Sokcho IC, Bigeumdo is an easy place to have breakfast before starting a day in Sokcho.

## Where is Bigeumdo, and what are its hours?

Bigeumdo is located at 5 Sinheung 2-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do, and is open daily from 08:30 to 22:00. Check Naver for regular closed days.

Bigeumdo, a well-known breakfast spot and Korean restaurant in Sokcho, sits in a quiet countryside area with a full view of Seoraksan. When you put it in your navigation, just search '속초 비금도' (Sokcho Bigeumdo). It's about 5 minutes by car from Sokcho IC, and about 15 minutes from Sokcho Beach or Sokcho Jungang Market, so it's a perfect spot to grab breakfast and then head straight into sightseeing around Sokcho.

## Inside the hanok dining room: seating and atmosphere

Bigeumdo was a serene hanok-style restaurant, and once we stepped inside it felt genuinely cozy. The lighting and interior gave off a feeling like the moon was floating in the room — there was a real sense of space, and I liked how far apart the tables were spaced.

We sat right by the entrance, and even that spot had a great view.

## The jeotgal (salted seafood) side dishes were the highlight

The side dishes served alongside at Bigeumdo also carried that southern Korean home-cooked touch, creating a wonderful synergy. The perfectly fermented, tangy-savory mukeunji (aged kimchi) and jeotgal (salted seafood), along with the clean, simple side dishes, pair beautifully with the rich, hearty pollack hangover soup.

The jeotgal was seriously incredible. The other side dishes were good too, but I think I'd come back just for the jeotgal.

## Pollack soup served in the pressure cooker itself

Bigeumdo's pollack hangover soup makes its entrance on a whole different level. Spoon a bowl of rice into the milky broth, top it with thick, tender pollack flesh and a bite of mukeunji, and you won't be able to stop until the very last grain of rice is gone. The broth is deeply rich.

When you think of pollack hangover soup for a hangover cure in Sokcho, you usually picture the ordinary sight of it bubbling away in an earthenware pot. But here, after you order and wait a bit, you hear the hissing sound of steam being released from the kitchen, and then a heavy pressure cooker is set down whole right on the table — the sight alone builds up overwhelming anticipation.

![The whole pressure cooker of pollack soup set on the table](https://img.superchart.com/images/sokcho-bigeumdo-hanok-hwangtae-breakfast/sokcho-bigeumdo-hanok-hwangtae-breakfast-13-18dnd-900.webp)

The moment the lid comes off, a cloud of steam bursts out along with that distinct, savory, deep aroma of pollack that really hits your nose. The broth isn't the clear type — it's milky and rich, like an ox bone broth simmered for hours. Thanks to the pressure cooker's high heat and pressure, all the deep nutrition and umami of the pollack gets fully extracted into the broth, and the first spoonful has that thick, dense feeling where your lips practically stick together.

The most surprising part is the texture of the pollack flesh. Dried pollack usually turns dry or tough along the grain when boiled into soup, but the pollack cooked in the pressure cooker soaks up the broth deeply along every fiber and comes out remarkably tender. You don't even need to chew — it dissolves softly on your tongue, releasing the pollack's natural savory flavor. The radish, cooked down until translucent, along with plenty of scallion and bean sprouts, cuts through any heaviness in the broth and adds a spicy, refreshing finish.

## Does Bigeumdo's pollack soup work as a hangover cure?

Bigeumdo's pollack hangover soup doesn't lean on strong spice or heavy seasoning — it's the honest flavor of the pollack itself, pulled to a deep richness by the power of the pressure cooker, so your stomach feels completely at ease. It has that refreshing effect of washing away last night's alcohol along with a sweat, and it also feels like you're being served a nourishing meal that fills you up properly.

Because it's ladled straight out of the pressure cooker, another great thing is that even the very last drop of broth stays piping hot. The generous portion is plenty for several adults to share, and the whole process of ladling it out of the rustic pot itself makes for a simple, homey dining experience.

The bathroom at Bigeumdo was clean too, which I appreciated. haha
