## In short

The European Haenggung Main Branch is a wood-fired pizza restaurant in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, Gyeonggi. During a family outing to Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, the writer ordered a Margherita pizza and the beef ragu pasta, the restaurant's best menu item, for lunch with a young child, and both the crisp wood-fired dough and finely ground beef suited the kid's taste well. With a hanok-style exterior and a spacious, modern interior, it's a solid choice for a family meal with kids.

We took a weekend trip with our kid to Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. After slowly wandering around the fortress, lunchtime crept up on us, and while looking for somewhere that would work both for our child and for our own grown-up tastes, we ended up at The European Haenggung Main Branch.

It's known for wood-fired pizza, so I'd been looking forward to it as one of the go-to pizza spots in Haenggung-dong even before visiting — and once I actually tried it, I understood why it has that reputation.

## A hanok-style exterior that fits right into the Haenggung-dong alleys

It was my first time in Haenggung-dong, and it turned out to be a neighborhood that's fun to explore alley by alley. The exterior of The European Haenggung caught my eye first, blending in nicely with the distinct atmosphere of the area. With its warm, hanok (traditional Korean house)-style look, it fit right into our Suwon Hwaseong outing, made for nice photos, and really gave us that feeling of being out in Haenggung-dong.

## Is the inside easy to visit with a kid?

Once we stepped inside, though, the vibe was totally different from the outside. The interior was bigger than expected, clean, and modern-feeling! The contrast between the hanok-style exterior and the sleek interior was pretty striking. When you go out to eat with a child, a cramped or cluttered space is always a worry, but here there was plenty of room, which made it a comfortable place to bring a kid.

## Ordering by QR code: Margherita and ragu pasta

Orders are placed using the QR code on the table. It was convenient to be able to look over the menu at our own pace and order right from our seats.

We ordered a Margherita pizza and beef ragu pasta. Since we'd come to a place known as one of the best wood-fired pizza spots in Haenggung-dong, we had to try the pizza, right? Among all the options, we picked the Margherita for being simple and kid-friendly, and for pasta we went with the beef ragu, the restaurant's best-selling menu item.

### Margherita pizza — the dough made it

First, the Margherita pizza I'd been looking forward to!

With wood-fired pizza, toppings matter, but personally I think the dough is really the key. From the first bite of The European's pizza, I could tell the dough was genuinely delicious. You could really taste the texture and aroma unique to a wood-fired oven, and it went perfectly with the light, clean flavor of the Margherita. No wonder this place is known for wood-fired pizza in Haenggung-dong. And best of all, our kid really enjoyed the pizza. Menu choices are always a bit of a puzzle when eating out with a child, so it was satisfying that this one suited a kid's palate too.

### Beef ragu pasta — finely ground meat made it easy for the kid too

And the dish I personally enjoyed the most was the beef ragu pasta. It's marked as the best menu item, so we ordered it, and sure enough, there was a reason it's the crowd favorite. The rich, hearty ragu sauce blended beautifully with the pasta, and there was a generous amount of ground beef, so every bite had that meaty flavor coming through. Since the meat was finely ground rather than in big chunks, it was also easy for our kid to eat, and with the sauce, noodles, and meat all together, the flavors came together nicely and it felt satisfyingly filling — a great pairing to order alongside the pizza.

The combination of Margherita pizza and beef ragu pasta is one I'd recommend if you're visiting with a kid.

## Final thoughts — how about it for lunch on a Suwon Hwaseong outing?

Overall, The European Haenggung Main Branch, where we stopped for lunch during our Suwon Hwaseong outing, fit right into a Haenggung-dong day out in both location and atmosphere. From the warm hanok-style exterior to the spacious, modern interior, the mood was great, and best of all, the food was satisfying. From the Margherita pizza with its properly wood-fired, delicious dough to the beef ragu pasta loaded with meat, our kid ate really well too, making it a solid spot for a family meal out.

If you're planning a weekend trip to Suwon Hwaseong Fortress or Haenggung-dong, it's worth stopping by for lunch or dinner. Especially if you love proper wood-fired pizza, or you're looking for a pizza spot in Haenggung-dong where you can comfortably eat with a kid, I'd recommend giving The European Haenggung a try. Next time we're in Haenggung-dong, we'd love to come back and try some of their other wood-fired pizza options :)
