Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi is a charcoal pork galbi (grilled short rib) restaurant on the second floor of a building at 1662 Manse-ro, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi. > Aged twice over 144 hours with cross-aging, for extra juicy and tender pork galbi — Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi

![Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi main image](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-01-1jjea-1200.webp)

I heard there was a great pork galbi (short rib) restaurant in Pyeongtaek, so I went to check it out myself. I usually love pork galbi grilled over charcoal, and this place lets you grill thick-cut pork galbi over real charcoal, so I was even more excited.

I was especially curious because the pork galbi is aged for 144 hours and gets that subtle smoky charcoal flavor on top. I also heard the side dishes here come out generous and varied, so here's my honest review of enjoying delicious meat at Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi, a Pyeongtaek pork galbi spot :)

## Where is Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi, and how is the parking?

- Location: 1662 Manse-ro, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, 2nd floor
- Hours: Mon-Fri 16:00-22:00 / Sat, Sun 10:00-22:00 (no break time)
- Parking: Very large parking lot

The first thing that caught my eye when I arrived was the extremely spacious parking lot. There was plenty of room to park, which made driving there really convenient. Parking is always a bit of a worry for family meals or when meeting with a bigger group, so it was great to be able to relax here without stressing about it.

![Entrance to Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi on the 2nd floor](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-03-1udcp-900.webp)

Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi is located on the 2nd floor of the building, and the exterior was kept clean and well-maintained, giving a neat, pleasant first impression.

![View of the neatly maintained restaurant exterior](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-04-orhi1-900.webp)

## Inside the second-floor dining room: seating and going with kids

![Spacious, neatly arranged interior of Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-05-10jdc-900.webp)

![Dining hall and table layout inside the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-06-1gjlk-900.webp)

Stepping inside, the interior was also spacious and neatly arranged. Since it's a charcoal pork galbi place, I was a little worried about heavy smoke or meat smells, but there was less smoke and odor than I expected, so I could eat comfortably.

![Dining hall with 4-person tables and large group tables](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-07-h74hb-900.webp)

There are basic 4-person tables as well as larger tables for bigger groups, so it works well for a meal for two, and also seems fine as a spot for family outings or group get-togethers and work dinners.

Overall the space felt roomy, so even with a lot of people around, it didn't feel cramped and I could eat comfortably.

![Baby chair set up in one corner of the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-08-1dq1l-900.webp)

There's a baby chair set up in one corner, so families visiting with kids can eat comfortably too. And since grilling meat over charcoal can sometimes leave your clothes smelling or get sauce splattered on them, there are disposable aprons available for whenever you need one.

We ordered the Ihwajeong seasoned pork grill (₩17,000), seasoned pork galbi (₩19,000), beef galbisal (₩24,000), doenjang stew (₩5,000), and rice (₩1,000).

The seasoned pork grill is 100% thick, tender pork neck, while the seasoned pork galbi apparently comes with both pork neck meat and rib-bone meat together.

## The banchan spread, including yangnyeom gejang (seasoned raw crab)

![A generous spread of basic side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-09-1mbb3-900.webp)

Once you order, a generous spread of basic side dishes arrives. There were lettuce and onions to pair with the pork galbi, along with salad, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), seasoned crab, dressed lettuce salad, potato salad, spicy radish salad, and more.

Eating only meat can get a bit greasy, so it was nice to have tangy side dishes like the dressed lettuce salad and spicy radish salad to cleanse the palate. Also, all the side dishes except the seasoned crab are refillable — the seasoned crab comes as a basic side dish you can try, but if you want more, you'll need to order it separately, so keep that in mind :)

There was a generous amount of fresh lettuce, perfect for wrapping the grilled pork galbi.

The onions paired well with the meat, whether eaten alongside it or tucked into a wrap — they went nicely with the sweet sauce on the pork galbi.

![Wrap vegetables, onion, salad, and other side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-10-1oen0-900.webp)

The salad had crunchy vegetables with a light dressing, perfect for a light bite.

And japchae, which I love, also came as a basic side dish.

The seasoned crab also came as a basic side dish — giving seasoned crab as a standard banchan! My partner loves this dish, so he was digging in even before the galbi arrived.

![Seasoned crab served as a basic side dish](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-11-1c0ed-900.webp)

The dressed lettuce salad paired especially well with the meat. The lettuce with its tangy seasoning had a clean, sharp flavor, so having a bit alongside the pork galbi refreshed my palate every so often.

The potato salad was soft and mild, not overly rich, so it was easy to eat without feeling heavy.

Lastly, the spicy radish salad came out too. The crunchy radish with its tangy seasoning went really well with the sweet pork galbi. I usually prefer radish salad over kimchi, and since it wasn't too strongly seasoned, I really liked it.

### What is on the self-serve bar at Ihwajeong?

![Self-bar with lettuce, onion, and ssamjang](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-14-ymh9u-900.webp)

There's also a self-bar set up in one corner. It had lettuce and onions to go with the pork galbi, along with salt, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and cheongyang chili peppers.

If you run low on wrap vegetables or sides while eating, you can conveniently grab more as needed, which was nice.

![Self-bar with mustard and vinegar for cold noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-15-1h1b5-900.webp)

Mustard and vinegar were also available for those who ordered cold noodles.

## Grilling the 144-hour aged, 2cm-thick pork galbi over charcoal

![Charcoal brazier set up on the table](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-16-k1reg-900.webp)

![Table set with real charcoal brazier and grill plate](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-17-1kdsd-900.webp)

After trying each side dish, the charcoal finally arrived. Once the charcoal was set up on the table, it was time to really get grilling the pork galbi. Pork galbi really does taste best grilled over charcoal.

One reason Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi stood out was the 144-hour aging — aged over a full six days, the meat felt noticeably thicker and more tender than typical pork galbi. What makes this place special is that instead of thinly sliced, sauce-coated galbi, they keep the meat at a thick cut of about 2cm.

Grilled directly over real charcoal after going through Ihwajeong's own sauce and aging process, the outside turned golden with a subtle smoky aroma while the inside stayed moist and tender.

![Thick seasoned pork galbi grilling over charcoal](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-18-104nj-900.webp)

Ihwajeong also has a bit of a story behind it — a sauce recipe rooted in a pear tree and 40 years of a grandmother's cooking know-how — which gave it a different feel from your typical charcoal pork galbi place. Trying it, the sauce wasn't overwhelmingly sweet; instead you could really taste the thick meat and the charcoal aroma together.

Taking a bite of the well-grilled pork galbi, even though the meat was thick, it was tender and juicy — delicious. The sweet, savory sauce soaked into the meat nicely, and with the subtle char from the charcoal grilling, it was the kind of flavor that kept me reaching for more.

This kind of seasoned pork galbi really is best eaten with rice. Putting a piece of pork galbi on a spoonful of warm rice, the sweet sauce and savory rice went so well together that a whole bowl disappeared in no time.

![Lettuce wrap with meat and onion](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-20-2k004-900.webp)

Wrapping the meat and onion in lettuce was delicious too, and it also worked well eaten simply with rice — versatile pork galbi you can enjoy however you like :)

It felt like a waste to eat only pork galbi, so we also ordered doenjang stew. It arrived bubbling hot, perfect alongside the warm charcoal-grilled pork galbi. With the savory doenjang flavor and a spoonful of rice dipped into the stew, it really is an essential pairing when eating meat.

## Is the 24,000-won beef galbisal worth ordering?

![Beef galbisal served with minced garlic on top](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-21-1qyuy-900.webp)

After enjoying the pork galbi, they also grilled the beef galbisal for us. The thickly trimmed beef galbisal came topped with minced garlic, looking really appetizing.

![Beef galbisal and garlic grilling over charcoal](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-22-wm1vr-900.webp)

Grilled golden over the charcoal, a savory aroma rose from it. Taking a bite, the meat was more tender and juicy than I expected, with no toughness at all — easy to chew. With the subtle charcoal aroma soaked in and the distinct savory beefy flavor, it made for a clean, satisfying bite.

Grilling the garlic alongside added a subtle aroma that complemented the savory flavor of the beef galbisal nicely. The beef galbisal was plenty tasty, but personally, the pork galbi had the edge! Still, the beef galbisal has its own mild, savory charm that's different from the seasoned galbi, so it was nice to order both and compare.

## Ending the meal with the free pear slush

![Pear slush drink served for dessert](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-23-1axmp-900.webp)

After finishing the meal, we got to enjoy a pear slush-style drink for dessert. Cool and sweet with pear flavor, it refreshed the palate nicely after all that pork galbi.

![A cool cup of pear slush](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking/pyeongtaek-sosabeol-charcoal-pork-ribs-parking-24-741lp-900.webp)

After eating meat, you always crave something sweet and cool at the end, so having a dessert like this ready made for a great finish.

## Final verdict on Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi

Overall, Ihwajeong Charcoal-Grilled Pork Galbi delivered a satisfying experience from the meat to the side dishes to the meal and dessert. In particular, the thick, 144-hour aged pork galbi grilled over charcoal was truly delicious, with a tender texture and subtle charcoal aroma, and it paired perfectly with rice for a hearty meal.
