I'm a capital-P type, so I never really plan my trips — I just wing it — which means I always miss things, but I try to make the most of it within that chaos, haha! This Pohang trip was a short one night, two days, but we found a great place to stay, went haeruji (nighttime tide-pooling for shellfish) and came away with an amazing haul, and had a genuinely fun time. As soon as we got out and walked through the alley, we were right at the restaurant — no getting lost. (Make sure to grab a parking voucher after your meal.) I'd heard Jukdo Market in Pohang was pretty large, so I was a little worried we might not find the sashimi restaurant right away. You can even greet them right outside the store and pick your own. I didn't really know the difference between the varieties before, but the shell color is completely different. Strong little guy — about to walk right out of the tank! And apparently the owner knows the family of a certain singer's child. I went back and forth between the Dokdo shrimp and the Bakdal Special at Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center, but since snow crab is my partner Pilwo Pan's favorite, we went with the Bakdal Special!! I'm not too familiar with the menus at other Jukdo Market sashimi restaurants in Pohang, but I imagine they're similar to this one — only the main dish differs, while the side dishes, mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), ramyeon, and spicy stew system are the same. By the way, apparently Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center will feed you unlimited food for free if you bring singer Lim Young-woong. I'll just pay, thanks — I have no confidence I could pull that off. ## Side dishes to octopus tangtangi: how fast the table fills Gaaah, I actually yelled out loud when I saw the very first side dishes come out. We hadn't even sat down for a full minute before the food started arriving — wow... They told us the name of each dish as it came out, but I only remembered the first few — after that there were too many and it all got auto-deleted from memory, haha. They said something was somebody's cheek meat (it was delicious!). Not pictured, but corn butter and fries also came out, and oh? Why are these two so good here haha. Then a plate of sashimi came out, and wow... there were only two of us. Was the portion a mistake? Our stomachs were already packed full and they gave us this too? The generosity at Jukdo Market sashimi restaurants in Pohang is on another level. Still, since they were slicing all these different kinds of sashimi fresh right in front of us, we couldn't not eat it!! I savored each type. Mmm~ you must be rockfish! The bakdal snow crab had an incredible presentation, and even though my stomach was already about to burst, they threw in complimentary shrimp and clams too, haha. Am I even going to make it home tonight? You know how home shopping channels sometimes feature snow crab, snapping off the claw and pulling the meat out while the host goes 'Ooh, ooh, do you see this?' — that exact visual! I got to watch it front row, live. And of course I tried the meat right as it was pulled out. > Ahh, this bakdal snow crab is sweet, so sweet~ Snow crab is seriously delicious! Push the meat out of the leg and it just slides right out. ## Finishing with ramyeon, skipping the spicy stew I'd eaten so much I could barely breathe, haha. Huff, huff — catching my breath, thinking okay, should we head out now? But Yeonggwang Hoe Daegae Center wasn't about to let me go that easily. 'All finished? Would you like some spicy stew, or ramyeon?' '...' This Jukdo Market sashimi restaurant in Pohang reminded me a bit of my grandmother, who used to feed us nonstop whenever we visited during school breaks. Their generosity even surpassed my grandmother's, haha. So we walked over toward Pohang Canal instead, where you can see the country's only view of a factory smokestack, POSCO. Wow... even though it was late, there were so many people out exercising. I've never seen this many runners even along the Han River — if you didn't know better, you'd think there was a marathon happening nearby at this hour. After that night walk, we headed back to the pension.
