## In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a premium gyukatsu (Japanese-style beef cutlet) restaurant on basement level 1 of the Obelisk shopping complex by Mapo Station in Seoul. The 47,000 won set of smoked gyukatsu (sirloin) comes with gamtae seaweed pollock roe and a drink, is grilled at the table on a personal bangjja brassware brazier, and ends with Sindongjin rice — refillable for free at the self-bar — turned into egg pot rice and ochazuke. Ten seconds on foot from the station, Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch works just as well for a weekday office lunch as for solo dining.

Today I'm sharing my visit to Gyudo, a place near Mapo Station that I, a certified gyukatsu lover, approved the moment I took a bite. Gyudo sits in the basement of the Obelisk shopping complex, connected directly to Mapo Station, making it just about the most convenient spot for office workers hunting for a good lunch near Mapo Station. Beyond gyukatsu, they also serve yakiniku and niku mabushi and other Japanese dishes — here's my review!

## Where Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is, and what the room feels like

Gyudo is connected straight from Exit 2 of Mapo Station into the Obelisk complex basement, so getting there was genuinely convenient. Especially on rainy or bad-weather days, being able to walk straight in from the station was such a relief. There's also basement parking in the complex, so it was easy to visit by car too.

The interior overall had a clean, tidy feel. Besides regular tables, there were bar-style seats too, so it didn't feel awkward to come alone. Table seating was also generous, so you could enjoy your meal without feeling rushed.

There's also a coat locker area on one side, which is especially great during outerwear season — it clearly helps cut down on your coat picking up food smells too, haha!

## The order: smoked gyukatsu (sirloin) set, 47,000 won

Gyudo's menu had gyukatsu, yakiniku, and niku mabushi in both set and à la carte forms — we went with the gyukatsu set.

The cutlery was placed in an individual drawer — inside was a custom-made cutlery pouch and a flake topping that's great to sprinkle in when you finish with the ochazuke (rice-in-broth), just so you know.

### The self-bar: ochazuke broth and free Sindongjin rice refills

The broth, water, and rice (refillable) needed for ochazuke were all at the self-bar. And they don't just use any rice — it's Sindongjin rice, and it's even free to refill, which honestly felt like a steal! 🍚

## What comes on the gyukatsu tray — housemade sides and sauces

Gyukatsu that looked amazing before I even tasted it. It arrives as a full spread with various side dishes, so it felt satisfying and hearty. They said the myeong-i wasabi, all the sauces, and even the mu-saengchae (radish salad) are 100% housemade — not store-bought, which made me trust it even more.

On top of that, the set came with pollock roe and gamtae seaweed, which paired really well with both the gyukatsu and the ochazuke.

![Personal brass brazier with smoked gyukatsu](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-sirloin-gyukatsu-lunch/gyudo-mapo-sirloin-gyukatsu-lunch-18-13qpn-900.webp)

### How to grill the gyukatsu on your own bangjja brassware brazier

You place a piece of meat on the custom-made personal brass brazier and grill both sides to your liking — I was worried overcooking it would be a shame, so I tried grilling it just lightly at first.

The outside had a crispy breaded crust while the inside stayed juicy — the classic crispy-outside, tender-inside gyukatsu, exactly as it should be. Gyukatsu really is one of those foods that always tastes good — I feel like I could eat it every single day and never get tired of it.

![Gyukatsu topped with gamtae and pollock roe](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-sirloin-gyukatsu-lunch/gyudo-mapo-sirloin-gyukatsu-lunch-21-11k7q-900.webp)

I also tried topping it with the gamtae and pollock roe that came with the set, and the umami got so much richer — it was seriously delicious.

![A thick slice of smoked gyukatsu](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudo-mapo-sirloin-gyukatsu-lunch/gyudo-mapo-sirloin-gyukatsu-lunch-22-fukii-900.webp)

Even eaten plain, the gyukatsu itself had a proper smoky aroma layered into the flavor. It's on the thicker side too, so you really get that chewy, meaty bite.

And thanks to the Sindongjin rice, the texture and stickiness of the rice were spot on. You know how truly good rice tastes great even eaten on its own, right?

### Cracking an egg into the pot rice, then finishing with ochazuke

Enjoy about half of the pot rice alongside your gyukatsu, and once about half is left, crack an egg in — it turns soft and delicious in a completely different way! I really recommend trying it this way too. To finish, I had the unique ochazuke pot rice that combines Korean sungnyung (scorched rice tea) with Japanese ochazuke.

## Who Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch suits best

Since it's run entirely as a company-owned store rather than a franchise, the flavor, staff friendliness, atmosphere, and cleanliness were all genuinely satisfying. It's just a 10-second walk from Mapo Station, so if your office is nearby, or you're heading toward the Han River and get a craving for gyukatsu, definitely give Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch a visit!
