## In short

Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon is a Chinese restaurant in the food alley just inside Exit 11 of Gangnam Station in Seoul, serving hand-pulled knife-cut noodles and dim sum. On a weekday visit at 11:45am with a coworker, the order was shrimp fried rice, xiaolongbao at 9,800 won and Sichuan-style beef knife-cut noodles at 11,000 won, totalling 31,300 won, with the first and second floors both nearly full. The balance of numbing Sichuan broth and chewy noodles at Namsogwan makes a return visit a certainty.

On a stressful weekday, don't you just crave something spicy and rich? While hunting for a proper Gangnam Chinese restaurant for lunch with a coworker, I stopped in my tracks in the alley just inside Exit 11 of Gangnam Station. It's a place called 'Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon,' which has spread by word of mouth among nearby office workers as a genuine Gangnam Chinese restaurant thanks to its chewy handmade knife-cut noodles and juicy dim sum. Let me share the details!

## Where is Namsogwan? The food alley at Gangnam Station Exit 11

Location: 19 Teheran-ro 1-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, 1st–2nd floor. Come out Exit 11 or 12 of Gangnam Station and walk a short way up the alley behind Youngpoong Bookstore, and you'll come face to face with an exotic exterior — a deep green wall and an arched wooden door.

Through the outer window on the first floor, you can watch the chef trimming dough by hand and shaping dumplings in an open kitchen — it instantly grabs the attention of passersby and builds a lot of visual anticipation.

## How long is the weekday lunch wait at Namsogwan? Nearly full at 11:45am

We got there around 11:45am and it was already packed, with maybe only 1–2 seats left, haha. If you want to eat right away, go earlier — or just go later.

The seating is slightly partitioned, which makes it a comfortable layout for conversation.

## Namsogwan's second floor: a 1990s Hong Kong movie set

Head up to the second floor and you feel like you've stepped onto the set of a 90s Hong Kong film. Wooden cabinets covered in old-fashioned Chinese lettering, colorful patterned stained-glass windows, and soft vintage lighting all come together to create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

The second floor was already nearly full too!

## What we ordered at Namsogwan and what it cost: 3 dishes, 31,300 won

Once you sit down, you can order intuitively and conveniently using the 'T-Order' tablet installed at every table. To properly fill our post-work-hungry stomachs, we ordered a good spread of the restaurant's signature dishes.

- Shrimp fried rice: the perfect carb base to cool down the spicy noodle dish.
- Xiaolongbao (₩9,800): juicy dim sum (5 pcs) that's an absolute must in any Chinese dining spread.
- Sichuan-style beef knife-cut noodles (₩11,000): chewy hand-cut noodles meeting a numbing, spicy broth.

We ordered a generous spread for a total of ₩31,300 — very reasonable given Gangnam prices. The basic side dishes were served neatly: crunchy, savory fried peanuts and tangy, salty zhacai (pickled mustard root).

## Xiaolongbao, 9,800 won: five soup-filled dumplings

Five pieces of xiaolongbao arrive beautifully arranged inside a warm, steaming bamboo basket. Lift one carefully with your chopsticks onto a spoon, and when you tear the thin wrapper, rich, heavy meat broth comes rushing out. Topped with shredded ginger and popped in one bite, it's an excellent dim sum where the savory pork flavor fills your whole mouth.

Once dim sum cools, the wrapper stiffens and the broth loses half its flavor. When the steamer arrives at the table, snap your photos quickly, then start eating by lifting one onto a spoon and slurping the hot broth first — that's the best way to enjoy it.

## Sichuan-style beef knife-cut noodles, 11,000 won: the signature dish

This is the identity and signature dish of the restaurant. Over the bright red, chili-oil-slicked Sichuan broth sit a generous heap of finely minced meat topping and fragrant chives.

Because the dough is sliced off at an angle with a knife — the defining trait of dosakmyeon (knife-cut noodles) — the center of each noodle is thick and chewy like a dumpling, while the edges taper off delicate and thin, soaking up the numbing, deep beef broth. The balance between the chewy bite that smacks your lips and the tingling, spicy Sichuan broth that hits your tongue was truly overwhelming.

Full spread shot! We only ordered 3 dishes, but somehow the table looks packed, right?

## Shrimp fried rice: the cool-down for that spicy broth

Just as the Sichuan broth was hitting hard, the shrimp fried rice stepped in as our relief pitcher. Shaped into a neat dome, it's packed edge to edge with plump, springy cocktail shrimp.

Every grain of rice is perfectly coated in oil, fluffy and separate, with a strong aroma of scallion oil and egg coming through. The light egg drop soup served alongside adds even more softness.

## Is Namsogwan worth it? A Gangnam Chinese restaurant for team dinners and dates

Among the common, predictable franchise restaurants around Gangnam Station, 'Namsogwan U Yuk Dosakmyeon' was a genuine Gangnam Chinese restaurant that delivers a real punch with the texture of chewy handmade knife-cut noodles and juicy dim sum.

From the exotic Hong Kong-style interior to a menu lineup that grabs your appetite, I'd recommend this without hesitation as a small group dinner spot to shake off the fatigue of office workers after hours, or as a unique weekend date spot for couples. I think I'll be craving that tingling, spicy Sichuan broth every time the cold wind blows and end up coming back without fail!
