## In short

Anok is a hanok (traditional Korean house) restaurant in Hongdae, Mapo, Seoul, reached by walking from Exit 9 of Hongik University Station and climbing the small staircase in front of the Superdry store. Two diners ordered Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) for 14,000 won, pork gomtang (clear pork broth soup) for 13,000 won and pork tail jjim (braised pork tail) for 29,000 won, pairing the clear broths with the lightly spicy braise in a space with an inner courtyard and lanterns under the eaves. Anok suits a meal with visiting friends from abroad or a Korean-food date course.

> Pyongyang naengmyeon enjoyed in a quiet, dignified hanok

The weather's gotten so nice lately. Is fall finally on its way? On days like this I love a date where we just walk outside and explore the alleys. Today I went to a Korean restaurant called Anok, near Hongik University Station!

It's open daily from 11am to 10pm, last order at 9pm, and closed every Monday. No parking is available, but corkage is allowed for ₩30,000 per bottle with no limit on the number of bottles.

## How to get to Anok: the staircase in front of Superdry

Anok is a hanok Korean restaurant you reach by walking from Exit 9 of Hongik University Station and climbing a small staircase in front of the Superdry store. If you just look at Naver Maps, you'll think, where on earth is a hanok around here?

![Street leading from Hongik University Station toward Anok](https://img.superchart.com/images/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard-01-b4mre-900.webp)

Come out of Exit 9, cross the street where the Beauty Musinsa building is, and walk toward Hongdae — you'll see Superdry, and right in front of it, a small staircase.

![Small staircase leading up to Anok in front of the Superdry store](https://img.superchart.com/images/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard-02-79wiu-900.webp)

This is the staircase! Just climb up a little and...

Ta-da — suddenly, a hanok.

Isn't it lovely? A Korean restaurant built as a hanok! I think it'd make for a really special visit with foreign friends.

## Inside Anok's gate: the courtyard and lanterns under the eaves

Walk through Anok's front gate and a small courtyard opens up, full of that quiet, dignified hanok feeling.

It's not a dining space, but you can tell the owner put a lot of care into it. Looking out at it from inside the restaurant, it felt really relaxed and calming.

I think this spot would be pretty whether the sun's out like today or it's raining.

There are lots of lanterns hung under the eaves, which I imagine really show their true colors in the evening. I think it'd make a lovely atmosphere for a dinner stop on a date course too.

Alright, shall we go inside?

## Anok's hanok interior and seating

Inside Anok, sunlight comes in through the wood-lattice windows, and most of the seats are for two or four people.

The sunlight coming through the lattice windows is so pretty. The hanok interior is done in wood tones too, and I think the lighting is really well used.

A couple who'd eaten before us seemed to love the courtyard too — they were taking photos of it for ages, haha.

Most of the seating was made up of tables for two and four.

## Anok's menu and what two people ordered

Anok's signature dishes are pork gomtang (bone broth soup) at ₩13,000 (large ₩17,000), Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) at ₩14,000 for water-based or ₩15,000 for bibim, and yukhoe bibimbap at ₩18,000. Between the two of us, we ordered one naengmyeon, one gomtang, and one pork tail jjim.

- Pork gomtang ₩13,000 / (large) ₩17,000
- Pyongyang naengmyeon (water) ₩14,000 / (bibim) ₩15,000
- Yukhoe bibimbap ₩18,000
- Pork bokjaengban ₩45,000
- Hanwoo bulgogi jeongol ₩64,000
- Pork tail jjim ₩29,000 / Naengjeyuk full plate ₩24,000 / Yukhoe ₩26,000
- Kimchi jeon ₩16,000 / Cheese potato jeon ₩15,000 / Deodeok gui ₩19,000
- Naengjeyuk half plate ₩13,000

There was a nice variety of cooked dishes too.

### Pyongyang naengmyeon at Anok, 14,000 won

The Pyongyang naengmyeon came out first! The food arrived really fast after we ordered.

![A bowl of Pyongyang naengmyeon at Anok](https://img.superchart.com/images/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard-17-1hgeh-900.webp)

![Close-up of the clear broth in Anok's Pyongyang naengmyeon](https://img.superchart.com/images/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard-18-wtbr5-900.webp)

As you can see in the photo, the broth is really clear. I think this would suit people who prefer a genuinely clean flavor with no MSG-ish taste. There were about five slices of pyeonyuk (boiled sliced meat) that size.

![Sliced boiled meat topping the Pyongyang naengmyeon](https://img.superchart.com/images/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard-19-1pmom-900.webp)

### Pork gomtang at Anok, 13,000 won

The gomtang broth is very clear too. Unlike the naengmyeon, it's topped with chopped scallions, and since the broth is warm it tastes a bit different from the naengmyeon broth!

It's served with the rice already mixed in underneath the meat topping.

### Pork tail jjim at Anok, 29,000 won

Last up, to share — the pork tail jjim. The naengmyeon and gomtang are both quite clean and plain, which could feel a bit lacking, but paired with the lightly spicy pork tail jjim, the combination worked really well. It wasn't very spicy at all, more like the mild heat of yangnyeom chicken.

## Final verdict: who is Anok best for?

Anok is a Hongdae Korean restaurant where you can enjoy food alongside the quiet, tidy atmosphere of a hanok. It's great if you're looking for somewhere to take a foreign friend, or if pizza and pasta have gotten tiresome as a date course and you're craving Korean food instead.

![Anok's hanok space at the end of the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard/anok-hongdae-hanok-korean-restaurant-courtyard-23-1g2w0-900.webp)

Fall keeps getting shorter every year, so don't miss it — spend some good time with the people you love in a beautiful space!
