## In short

Anok is a Korean restaurant set in a preserved hanok (traditional Korean house) in an alley a 7-minute walk from Hongik University Station Exit 9 in Mapo, Seoul. Two diners walked in on a weekend evening with no wait and shared pork gomtang at 13,000 won, Pyongyang naengmyeon (water-style) at 14,000 won and pork tail jjim at 29,000 won, all in generous portions. Corkage is 30,000 won per bottle with no limit on bottles, and since Anok is hard to book and seats guests in order of arrival, it suits treating visiting friends from abroad or older family.

Hi, this is Chaendong :) Did you know there's a stunning restaurant in Hongdae that's kept its original hanok (traditional Korean house) charm intact? I visited Anok, where you can enjoy Korean food quietly even amid the hip streets of Hongdae.

> Anok

## Booking Anok and the weekend evening wait

Since Anok is a small space that keeps its hanok structure intact, they said it's hard to hold tables in advance. So reservations are difficult, and you're seated in order of arrival. For reference, I visited on a weekend evening and got in with no wait at all.

## How to walk to Anok from Hongik University Station, and where to park

It's very close to Hongik University Station. It's on the bustling side of the neighborhood, but tucked into a quiet alley, which I loved.

Because of the local commercial layout, there's nowhere to park nearby. If you're driving, you'll need to use a public parking lot in the area. It's a 7-minute walk from Exit 9 of Hongik University Station, so I'd recommend public transit.

## Before you go to Anok: corkage, pets and house rules

- Corkage is allowed. There's no limit on the number of bottles you bring, and it's ₩30,000 per bottle.
- Pets are not allowed.

If you join Anok's visitor review event, you can get a free drink! (Running through October 31, once per person, not combinable with other discount coupons.)

## Seating and hanok atmosphere inside Anok

Seating is table-style, with group seating for up to 12. Most places in Hongdae are hip and trendy, so the serene hanok interior felt refreshingly different. Because of the hanok interior, I noticed a lot of foreign visitors too. It's also a great place to treat younger folks or elders.

## What's on the menu at Anok

Gomtang (bone broth soup) and Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) are the mains at Anok. There's a wide range of Korean dishes too — Korean beef bulgogi hot pot, pork platter, pork tail jjim (braised pork tail) — great for sharing if you come with a group.

Even the basic side dishes come out beautifully arranged. Sides that pair perfectly with gomtang!

I ordered pork gomtang (₩13,000), Pyongyang naengmyeon (water-style, ₩14,000), and pork tail jjim (₩29,000). Such a neat, well-arranged spread, right? The portions were on the generous side for two people.

## Pork gomtang, 13,000 won: clear broth with the rice already in

Gomtang comes in a special size and a regular size, so you can choose based on your appetite.

![Clear pork gomtang served with rice mixed in](https://img.superchart.com/images/anok-hongdae-hanok-gomtang-corkage/anok-hongdae-hanok-gomtang-corkage-09-1lilz-900.webp)

First, the gomtang came with the rice already mixed in. The broth was clear. Anok's broth is made with carefully selected medicinal ingredients like milk vetch root and burdock, giving it a subtle yet deep flavor.

There was a huge amount of meat, so it made for a hearty full meal. The broth wasn't piping hot, either — it was served at exactly the most delicious, comfortable temperature, so I could fully taste the umami of the broth itself.

## Pyongyang naengmyeon (water-style), 14,000 won: a first taste

Honestly, this was my first time trying Pyongyang naengmyeon! It's known for being subtly plain in flavor, but it had a strangely addictive quality that kept me coming back for more bites. I was surprised at how well it paired with the pork gomtang.

![A bowl of water-style Pyongyang naengmyeon at Anok](https://img.superchart.com/images/anok-hongdae-hanok-gomtang-corkage/anok-hongdae-hanok-gomtang-corkage-12-18f95-900.webp)

The naengmyeon was also loaded with meat. The noodles were chewy and springy too :) By the way, Pyongyang naengmyeon comes in two options — water-style or mixed (bibim).

By the way, the meat tastes even better dipped in the sauce that comes alongside.

## Pork tail jjim, 29,000 won: how it pairs with the gomtang

Pork tail jjim! This was my first time trying pork tail as a cut of meat at all. The chewy texture really stood out! It wasn't tough at all — actually quite tender.

![Spicy pork tail jjim at Anok](https://img.superchart.com/images/anok-hongdae-hanok-gomtang-corkage/anok-hongdae-hanok-gomtang-corkage-15-33uxg-900.webp)

Since the gomtang and naengmyeon are both mild in flavor, pairing them with the spicy pork tail jjim made everything taste even better. The portion was also very generous.

## Who Anok in Hongdae is best for

If you're looking for a Korean restaurant in Hongdae to bring foreign friends to, or to treat elders or acquaintances, I recommend Anok. The atmosphere was great and the food was delicious — I left very satisfied.
