## In short

Artis Theme Park is an indoor nature theme park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, where families can meet aquatic and land animals. Our 2- and 5-year-old siblings enjoyed feeding animals, touching a lizard, and completing a stamp tour. Verdict: a comfortably compact animal adventure for young children.

We visited Artis Theme Park, an indoor animal park in Dongtan, with our 2- and 5-year-old siblings over the weekend. I thought I’d share our animal-experience story with a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old!

We were wondering where to go with the kids that weekend, and after golf class this time, we skipped going straight home and headed to Artis Theme Park in Dongtan.

The kids usually love zoos and aquariums, but when a place is as huge as a major aquarium, simply getting around with little children can sometimes be a bit exhausting, you know?

With that in mind, we were quite happy with Artis Theme Park! If I had to put it in one sentence, it felt like “a compact animal theme park where children explore by seeing, feeding, and touching animals themselves.” We visited with our two children, aged 2 and 5, and I loved that there were more experiences than expected that even our younger child could do.

## What kind of place is Artis Theme Park?

Artis Theme Park (아르티스테마파크) is an indoor nature theme park on Dongtan-daero 19-gil in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do.

![Indoor nature theme park space](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-04-s8e71-900.webp)

It combines areas for observing aquatic creatures, like an aquarium, with areas for meeting a range of land animals. It is not just about looking at animals: hands-on programs include feeding, animal encounters, and docent-style ecology explanations. If you are looking all at once for a Dongtan aquarium, an indoor animal park, and somewhere to take children in Dongtan, I thought this kind of place could be a good option.

## An animal adventure begins as soon as you enter

What we liked most was that we could keep meeting animals from the moment we entered. The children put food into small feeding cups and carried them around to give to the animals, so they naturally began searching for the next one, saying, “Whose food is this?”

Our 5-year-old was excited just to be carrying the food and was eager from the start. Even our 24-month-old held Mom and Dad’s hands, looked closely at the animals, and stayed focused for quite a while. Rather than simply passing by saying, “A rabbit! An elephant!” the process of feeding and observing them made a clear difference in how absorbed the children were.

## How does the animal-feeding experience work?

One of Artis’s signature experiences is animal feeding.

![Preparing for the animal-feeding experience](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-05-1ahqq-900.webp)

Different kinds of food are prepared and divided up according to the animal, then the children feed each animal themselves. Carrying the food while moving through the space naturally encouraged us to look around every corner, and it was fun to connect the animals’ appearances with their food: “This is for the rabbit!” “This is for the turtle!”

Seeing animals in books or videos is definitely different from seeing live animals up close and watching what they do.

## We touched a lizard and connected with it firsthand

This was also why Artis Theme Park felt a little different from a typical Dongtan aquarium or animal display. There was a lizard right as we entered, and our child got to touch a lizard for the first time after only seeing one in books~

![A child’s lizard encounter](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-06-nnylx-900.webp)

![Animal experience of touching a lizard](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-07-4ep4u-900.webp)

Rather than a viewing-only space where you look at animals from afar, it felt more like an experiential space where children take part and connect with animals directly. In addition to feeding, programs such as touching animals and aquatic-creature experiences are offered, along with docent-style ecology explanations.

The teachers helping out were so lovely with the children and explained everything well, which made it even better~! That kind of thing matters, right? ^-^ I think children who are not afraid of animals could enjoy it much more actively.

## There was plenty a 2-year-old could do

Before this visit, our younger child was 24 months old, so I wondered, “Isn’t that still too young?” The admission fee is quite expensive, too! But once we got there, there was more to see and do than I had expected.

![A 2-year-old’s indoor animal adventure](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-09-1xjcw-900.webp)

When feeding the fish, the food pieces are bigger than I expected~! So even our younger child, whose fine motor skills are still developing, fed them independently. Since this child usually loves fish, it was such a great experience~

![The younger child feeding fish](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-11-x44f9-900.webp)

It felt a little different from a Dongtan kids’ café where only the older child has all the fun.

![Children looking around the animal experience](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-12-dmn4n-900.webp)

Our 5-year-old actively joined in with feeding and observing the animals, while our 2-year-old explored in their own way by watching the animals closely and following their movements. Because the space itself was not enormous, it was also less daunting to move through slowly with young children.

## The advantage of being compact, unlike a huge aquarium

I actually felt this was one of Artis’s strengths. There were stamp stations along the way, too! The kids were the first ones to rush over to stamp them, haha, and both our older and younger child worked hard stamping their own sheets.

![Children’s stamp-tour experience](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-13-1wv3q-900.webp)

If you expect gigantic tanks and a long route like at a major aquarium, it may feel a little different. Still! It was such a fun time, and we met animals we do not usually get to see~

We could look around at a good pace before the children became tired; when they found an animal, they could observe it closely, feed it, then move on to the next one. It really felt like an adventure. For a 2-year-old especially, I think this setup—where new animals kept appearing right in front of them—was actually easier to focus on than a space that was too large.

## A fun time for the parents, too

With experiences for children, sometimes parents only end up following them around.

![A family animal experience together](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-15-9auqj-900.webp)

![Indoor adventure for parent and child](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-16-1bh0y-900.webp)

But we had quite a lot of fun here too, haha. We were surprised alongside the children whenever they discovered an animal, and it was adorable when they said, “Mom, look at this!” When they fed the animals, the parents found themselves watching the animals’ reactions even more carefully than the kids did.

![A family experience watching an animal’s reaction](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-17-6tzab-900.webp)

In the end, it felt as if not only the children but Mom and Dad were going on an animal adventure together.

## Feeding stingrays was a different kind of experience

A Dongtan kids’ theme park where you can encounter a variety of aquatic creatures, too! Feeding loaches to stingrays at Artis Theme Park was also a unique experience~

![Stingray-feeding experience](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-18-8oz8d-900.webp)

![Aquatic-creature encounter area](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-19-x62si-900.webp)

This was different from the kids’ cafés we usually visit for running and playing, and also different from an aquarium centered on huge tanks. Its biggest feature was that it is an experiential theme park where you slowly look around while connecting directly with animals. It was also a good place to visit with siblings of different ages, like our 2- and 5-year-olds.

## Cafeteria and family facilities after your visit

After visiting with our 2- and 5-year-olds, I came away thinking, “It is not good because it is huge; it is good because children can take part themselves.” Getting close to cute animals that are not easy to meet in everyday life, portioning out food and feeding them directly, observing all kinds of creatures, and even connecting with them firsthand—it must have made for quite a memorable day for the children.

Especially for families with babies and young children, a compact, adventure-style animal theme park like this may actually be more comfortable than a huge, complicated space. Even after we came home, our children were talking about “feeding the animals!”

![Theme park space after finishing the visit](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-20-loe2t-900.webp)

When you finish the whole visit and come out, there is a cafeteria~! At the unmanned drink café, each adult can have one drink.

![Rest area at the unmanned drink café](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-22-u14oo-900.webp)

After doing all the activities with the children, it was nice to have a space like this where we could properly rest too ^^

![Family-facilities information area](https://img.superchart.com/images/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding/dongtan-indoor-zoo-toddler-feeding-24-178do-900.webp)

We stopped by the restroom on the way out, and there was a child-friendly toilet. Near the entrance, there was also a diaper-changing station and nursing facilities! Our little cuties treasure the badges they received as a final event gift so, so much, haha.
