## In short

Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch is a bossam (boiled pork with wraps) and pork bone kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 of Mangwon Station in Mapo, Seoul. On a Friday evening, two people shared a medium bossam platter at 42,000 won with pork bone kalguksu at 12,000 won and Bongpyeong buckwheat makgeolli at 5,000 won, and the five-layer pork belly came out tender rather than chewy, with a complimentary braised beef side. Pyeongidambaek earns 5/5 for return visits on the strength of that bossam, kalguksu and makgeolli combination.

## How to walk there from Mangwon Station Exit 1, and what the restaurant feels like

Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch is about a 5-minute walk from Mangwon Station Exit 1? A big sign, a big storefront. There's even an inner room, so the interior is pretty spacious. (Still, watch out — it packs in fully.)

Right~! A glass of makgeolli with bossam~! (Said that, drank one glass, and was out for the count 🤣)

There's a new menu item — water spout clam kalguksu. It's currently half-price to celebrate the launch. I hesitated a bit, but decided to try the original haha

## What we ordered at Pyeongidambaek and what it cost

- Bossam (medium) / ₩42,000
- Pork bone kalguksu / ₩12,000
- Makgeolli / ₩5,000
- Rice / ₩1,000

To cut to the chase: a dream combination.

*Bongpyeong buckwheat makgeolli / ₩5,000*

### Only one makgeolli on the menu: Bongpyeong buckwheat

Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch has just one type of makgeolli — Bongpyeong buckwheat makgeolli (₩5,000). I didn't taste anything super distinctive, but it was fizzy and clean, which is exactly my style 😉

### The complimentary jangjorim (soy-braised beef) side

Before the bossam came out, they gave us braised beef (jangjorim) on the house to snack on with the makgeolli. Touched by the gesture, then touched again by the taste 🥹 — it had cheongyang chili in it, spicy and rich. Perfect makgeolli pairing.

### Two kinds of kimchi come as the standard sides

The basic side dishes at Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu are two kinds of kimchi. The two had such different charms that the combo worked really well. The napa cabbage kimchi had a deep, fermented-seafood-heavy flavor (kind of a Jeolla-do style, if I had to guess), while the cubed radish kimchi was clean, Seoul-style, refreshing! Hahahaha. It'd been so long since I had kimchi that heavy on fermented seafood that I was startled at first — but it grew on me haha.

## Is the 42,000-won medium bossam platter enough for two?

And then out came the full bossam spread from Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu 🤍 The pork comes with a set of dried radish strips, salted shrimp, garlic and chili, and ssamjang (dipping sauce). It's pork belly, so the lean-fat combo looked really appetizing 🤤

Empty stomach, so let's have a piece of meat first. Napa leaf + meat + dried radish + garlic — how could I ever forget this combo ㅠㅠㅠㅠ I need to eat this regularly! And honestly, I was shocked after the first bite. The pork was extremely, extremely tender. It melts in your mouth, goes down smoothly with zero chewiness. The moment I took a bite, my eyes went wide and I shouted, "This is better than One Grandma's bossam!!" Hahahahaha. This is a real Hapjeong bossam gem.

And straight to a glass of makgeolli — 🍻

Honestly the portion didn't look huge at first, so I worried it wouldn't be enough for my partner, but there was quite a lot hiding underneath (?). Plenty for two to eat their fill!

## What the 12,000-won pork bone kalguksu tastes like

Gotta have carbs too~ Pyeongidambaek's signature dish, pork bone kalguksu (noodle soup). I debated getting bone soup with rice instead, but my partner knew exactly what I wanted — kalguksu plus a bowl of rice 🤣 First off, the egg garnish is generous, and there's plenty of green onion too.

There are two solid chunks of meat inside. After eating so much bossam, having pork bone meat is a whole different flavor! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I thought it was a bit blander than expected, but there's salt and pepper on every table. Adding pepper brought the savory depth up even more.

The rice bowl was also packed full.

![A bowl of rice filled to the brim](https://img.superchart.com/images/pyeongi-dambaek-bossam-makgeolli-dinner/pyeongi-dambaek-bossam-makgeolli-dinner-16-2itrr-966.webp)

They mix the rice in nicely too, and wrapping bossam in the noodles — this is happiness, what else could it be.

## Final verdict on Pyeongidambaek in one line

> A taste and combination that makes you forget your ailments and overeat.. 🥹
