My boyfriend and I were deciding where to have a drink with dinner, and we headed to Gyodong for the first time in a while. Gyodong has so many atmospheric bars once evening comes around, so it is a neighborhood we often end up visiting for dates. That day, rather than having something too heavy, we wanted a few tasty dishes with a beer and plenty of time to chat.

That is how we found Gyodong Nakwon (교동 낙원). At this Daegu Gyodong bar, we ordered motsunabe (Japanese offal hot pot), stir-fried beef brisket and bean sprouts, and Cass. To give away the conclusion first, our couple’s unexpected number-one pick was the stir-fried beef brisket and bean sprouts. We went in expecting the motsunabe, but as soon as we took a bite of the brisket dish, we both said it was delicious at the same time, haha. It went so well with beer and was the kind of dish you keep reaching for without feeling weighed down, so it really stayed with me.

## Gyodong Nakwon location and how to get there

Gyodong Nakwon is at 1F, 627 Gukchaebosang-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu. It is right next to Melting Point, so it is not difficult to find if you know the area. It is about 572 m from Exit 3 of Jungangno Station, or roughly a five-minute walk toward Novotel if you take the subway. The orange sign out front really catches your eye, so it was easy to spot once we got nearby. If it is your first visit, using Melting Point as your landmark makes things much easier.

### Getting to this Gyodong izakaya from Jungangno Station

Come out of Exit 3 at Jungangno Station and walk toward Novotel. Gyodong Nakwon is beside Melting Point, before Gongpyeong Intersection. If you are taking a bus, get off at the CGV Daegu Hanil Across stop and go about 100 m toward Gongpyeong Intersection. Pass Gongjudang, then look for the spot beside Melting Point. I tend to worry that I will get lost when going somewhere for the first time, but checking the location beforehand made this one easier to find than I expected.

## How was the motsunabe offal hot pot?

The first dish we ordered was the ₩26,000 motsunabe. We tried it because it was described as one of Gyodong Nakwon’s signature drinking dishes. It is a hot pot made by simmering assorted vegetables and daechang (beef large intestine) in a rich chicken broth brewed for over 10 hours.

Once it arrived at the table and began bubbling away, the warm scent of the broth rose up, and I thought, yes, a hot-pot dish like this really belongs at a bar. The combination worked well because we could eat the daechang and vegetables together, and it would suit anyone who likes a brothy drinking dish. It feels like the kind of menu item I would crave even more on a cool evening. With hot broth and daechang in it, it was lovely to eat slowly with beer.

## Our couple’s top pick: stir-fried beef brisket and bean sprouts

And the dish we enjoyed most that day! It was the ₩17,000 stir-fried beef brisket and bean sprouts. It is made by stir-frying chadolbagi (thinly sliced beef brisket) and assorted vegetables in a tsuyu-based sauce. Honestly, even while ordering, I thought the motsunabe would be the main event. But after one bite of the brisket dish, I changed my mind.

The rich flavor distinctive to the beef brisket and the crisp texture of the bean sprouts came through together, and the combination was so good. Rather than being aggressively seasoned, the sauce suited the brisket and sprouts so well that I kept eating it. My boyfriend and I each took a bite, said, “This is seriously delicious,” and both immediately agreed, haha.

Cass and the stir-fried beef brisket and bean sprouts were an especially good pairing. One bite of savory brisket followed by a sip of cold beer—perfect! Of everything we ate that day, this was both of our favorite. If you are looking for an anju (dish for drinking) to have with beer at a Daegu Gyodong bar, I would personally recommend it.

## A slow evening of conversation with Cass

For drinks, we simply ordered Cass for ₩5,500. We wanted to eat slowly and talk a lot that day, so a beer was just right. Especially with the stir-fried brisket and bean sprouts, the beer went down so easily.

When you put down a dish and share a beer while talking about this and that, time seems to pass so quickly. We had planned to eat something simple and leave, but the atmosphere was comfortable, so we ended up sitting there longer than expected.

## The atmosphere for Gyodong dates and gatherings

Gyodong Nakwon was a bar with an atmosphere that suits an evening visit. Gyodong itself is a lovely neighborhood at night, so it is fun to look around as you walk there, and the location is also good for moving somewhere else after your meal. It did not feel at all intimidating for a couple on a date.

Rather than a very heavy meal, it has an atmosphere of enjoying food with drinks, which made it easy to talk comfortably with my boyfriend. It would also be nice for a casual drink with friends, and for a larger group, a shareable dish such as motsunabe would be a good choice. They say group visits and reservations are possible, so if you are planning a gathering, it may be worth checking about a reservation before visiting.

## Gyodong Nakwon parking information

Gyodong Nakwon does not have its own dedicated parking lot. If you visit by car, use one of the nearby paid parking lots; on weekends, they also suggest parking free at the City Hall lot before coming over. If, like me, you use public transit, it is within walking distance of Jungangno Station, so visiting by subway is convenient too. If parking is a concern when making plans in Gyodong, I recommend checking nearby parking locations before you go.

The motsunabe was a warm hot pot with rich chicken broth, daechang, and vegetables, so it paired nicely as a drinking dish. But our couple’s real top pick was the stir-fried beef brisket and bean sprouts. The richness of the brisket worked beautifully with the crunch of the sprouts, and it paired so well with beer that we kept reaching for it.

Sharing the dishes between the two of us meant we could try several things, and overall it felt like a great place for relaxed drinks. Most of all, I liked that a date night in Gyodong could take care of both dinner and drinks in one stop. So if we plan drinks in Gyodong again, this Daegu Gyodong bar, Gyodong Nakwon, will come to mind. Next time, I would like to order some different dishes too. After eating something delicious and chatting with my boyfriend for ages, I felt happier and as if the day’s fatigue had melted away.
