It was the day we settled the balance on our newlywed home, so I had all sorts of things to do from the morning. Once everything was finished, my mom said she wanted a proper Korean meal for the first time in a while, so we went out for lunch. We visited Hantiok Lotte Department Store Nowon Branch (한티옥 롯데백화점 노원점) at Lotte Department Store Nowon. There are days when I crave Korean food while eating at a department store, and this was exactly one of those days.

## Where is Hantiok, and what is on the menu?

Hantiok is on the ninth-floor dining level of Lotte Department Store Nowon. It is connected to Nowon Station, so it is conveniently located for a meal while visiting the department store.

Since it is inside the department store, it is easy to stop in for a meal while shopping, and it had an easygoing atmosphere for eating with parents, too. So as we looked for somewhere to eat together that day, we naturally ended up walking into Hantiok.

One nice thing about a department-store dining level is that there are menu boards and food models like this at the entrance, which makes choosing much easier. We picked our food before going in, too. Along with bossam (boiled pork wraps), Hantiok had a wide range of Korean dishes, including Andong guksu (noodle soup), Andong gukbap (rice soup), spicy pork ssambap (rice and wraps), and makguksu (buckwheat noodles).

We visited on a weekday lunchtime, and once inside, the restaurant was much larger than I expected. The tables were spaced comfortably, so I got the sense that even during a busy time like lunch, the dining area would turn over quickly.

## Ordering medium bossam and the makguksu set

After looking over the menu, we ordered the medium bossam and makguksu set that day. Since there were two of us, I thought too much food might feel like a burden, but once it arrived, the medium bossam was just the right amount for two people.

Not long after we ordered, the side dishes arrived: bean sprouts, pickled gungchae (stem lettuce), fresh kimchi, and pickled onions. The pickled gungchae especially suited my taste. It had a crisp texture and just the right seasoning, so it paired well with the bossam. The fresh kimchi and pickled onions were also good to eat with the meat.

## Thinly sliced, tender bossam

The bossam came thinly sliced, making it easy to eat in one bite. The meat was tender and soft, and when I wrapped it in lettuce with the meat and side dishes, I kept reaching for more without it feeling heavy.

One small thing I personally missed was perilla-leaf wraps. I usually love perilla leaves with bossam, so that was a slight disappointment, but it was still plenty tasty wrapped in lettuce. There was also enough bossam for the two of us to have a full meal. Looking at the menu, I saw that the medium bossam is currently available on its own as well.

## Makguksu set with added broth

The makguksu we ordered alongside it was more generous than I expected, too. When you order it as a set, it comes with two steamed dumplings.

The seasoning suited my taste, so I ate it bibim-style at first, but we had added a little too much mustard at the beginning. So halfway through, we asked for some broth separately and poured it in.

I started with it bibim-style, then adding the broth changed the flavor so much that it felt like I was having another dish. As the seasoning mixed with the broth, it became a little milder and the noodles moister, and I liked this way of eating it, too. If you are looking for a restaurant at Lotte Department Store Nowon and craving Korean food, this menu combination seems easy to choose. It would be especially easy to share dishes on a department-store visit with parents.

## A meal with Mom on the day we settled our newlywed home

The food itself was good that day, of course, but what I remember more is having the meal with my mom. After finishing the big task of settling the balance on our newlywed home, sitting across from her over a meal left me feeling strangely emotional. It might have been a meal I would normally have simply passed by, but since getting married, time spent with my mom seems more precious than before.

Hantiok was spacious, so the meal did not feel cramped, and the staff were kind, too. It was a good place to comfortably take care of a meal inside the department store on a day packed with errands like this one. The branch we visited is on the ninth floor of Lotte Department Store Nowon, making it convenient to combine with shopping or other plans. The department store's official guide also says that its Nowon branch connects to Nowon Station Exit 4 through the basement first-floor store, and that it is accessible from Exits 2 and 9 of Nowon Station on Line 4. If I visit Lotte Department Store again, I would like to try other Korean dishes as well. We chose bossam and makguksu this time, but warm dishes such as Andong guksu or gukbap also made me curious. If you are looking for somewhere for a neat, uncomplicated meal at Lotte Department Store Nowon, Hantiok is worth remembering. It suited a day like this one with my mom, when we wanted Korean food that did not feel too heavy.
